  • Myoko Now: Tuesday 10th February 2015

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 20cm Snowfall at base this season 1236cm Posted on Tuesday 10th February 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . My apologies for the late report - there has been some mid-season madness going on this morning! The very heavy snow that we were sort of expecting... kind of missed us a bit, going just to the north of us here in the main Myoko area. If the Arai resort was still open, they'd have got dumped on! Even so, there's a good 20cm at base and I am hearing from colleagues of maybe even up to about 1m of fresh snowfall very high up above 1600m. It's quite nice now with very light snow falling but keeping quite bright. It's a little warmer than yesterday and we expect it to warm up further tomorrow along with some sunshine for the national holiday that it is. Expect things to be busier than a normal Wednesday because of those things. Snow should be back falling by Friday! • Myoko Now: Wednesday 11th February 2015

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 1241cm Posted on Wednesday 11th February 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It's sunny again today, after some light snow through the day yesterday (but really very little accumulation). That's a warm sun, too - very nice to be out in (but probably making for gloppy snow, and the potential for another crusty layer in the snow when the fresh falls again). Which it should, possibly from late today into the rest of the week. There are several low pressure cells to the west and north, and snow is forecast, possibly even a bit heavy on Friday. Yea! Just watch for wind loading if you go out in the hills - the wind could be very strong on Friday as well. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . As predicted, the snow is falling in Myoko today, and it is coming down pretty hard right now. The wind is pretty strong as well—some good gusting and blowing a few minutes ago. Could be pretty blustery high up on the hill. There's a solid low pressure system coming in just to the north, then some high pressure further west that will probably give us some sun again early next week. At least with snow falling the car (and the snow banks) are clean again. These mini-spring days of sun and warm and melt make everything brown.... Not ready to give up non winter yet! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Nice powder on the hill today, after some pretty strong winds overnight. Cold, too; Akakan shows -10 early this morning (same as the trusty car thermometer). Hard to tell with all the drifting, but there's probably 30cm of fresh, and the possibility of even heavier snow late today and into tonight. Not too bad. It's bright now, though—not sunny, but not gloomy either. • Myoko Now: Sunday 15th February 2015

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 30cm Snowfall at base this season 1296cm Posted on Sunday 15th February 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It's a blustery day in Myoko; a pretty good snowfall overnight that has only picked up this morning, and a strong wind coming from the northwest. Heavy snow, too, today—the snowthrower got clogged up several times with the fine, dense snow that fell overnight. The fresh this morning is a little lighter and more skier friendly; the earlier stuff would make for hard skiing (and hard climbing) offpiste. The snow is not that stable, either—use extreme care if you do decide to climb today. I know several tour companies that decided to cancel tours for more controlled circumstances (like powder lessons in the resorts!). These cycles of sun/warm temperatures followed by snow and wind is making things unpredictable, so better to be conservative - but still find a safe place to ski! Driving is also tough today; went up to Seki Onsen this morning, and there were several tie-ups as cars without four-wheel drive and/or chains could not get up the hill. It's not just inconvenient, it can be dangerous with cars sliding down the road.... The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The snow is falling today; not a huge amount overnight, but a decent amount all the same and it seems likely to pick up through the day. Enjoy while you can! High pressure is moving in to make a sunny Saturday, and then things get really warm (and the rain may fall). Otherwise, things are looking good in Myoko; the crowds have thinned a bit, so it's a little easier to get a seat in a local restaurant - not complaining about the increased number of international customers, mind you... Sorry to be late today, but we're fighting some high winds and lots of snow, and all the accompanying fun....shoveling, snow throwing, digging out vehicles. After a day fighting with snow and blasted by wind, it is nice to have a good clear view of the mountains. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . I said something was going to happen yesterday; unfortunately that meant some rain late in the day. Fortunately, this turned to snow by morning, and is really picking up, along with the wind, at the present time. We could use a good coating of powder; it's pretty icy out there today on the slopes (and in the trees as well!). Again, keep an eye out if the wind really does get strong and deposits a lot of new snow on top of the hard base—things could get dicey off the ski areas. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A lot of new snow this morning; it started about 8 last night, and has been falling pretty steadily since then. Our season of strange snowfall continues, though; it's not that cold, the snow is pretty heavy; we didn't have wind earlier but now it's pretty gusty at moments.... not super-light powder, that much is for sure. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 20cm Snowfall at base this season 1423cm Posted on Tuesday 3rd March 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Good morning, and sorry not to have reported yesterday - I was involved in a rescue up on Mt. Maeyama, in front of Myoko. As usual, the media had the word "Backcountry" up like it was something scary; in fact, the woman who was injured and her team didn't do anything wrong, really. Maybe a bad choice on the weather, but they did everything else right for a stay overnight until rescuers got there. I recently saw a figure on how many people die in the ocean every year, but no news reports put "Free Swimming" in big purple letters or wonders why people don't just stay in the pool.... take care, be prepared, and go out there I say. End of rant. We had a little over 20cm of fresh snow up to yesterday. There was a lot of wind, and a lot of windloading of slopes (to go back to the rescue, it was too windy for the helicopter to do a pickup). Nice and quiet and a little bit gray today. A nothing is going on, good day to just go out and ski day. • Myoko Now: Tuesday 10th March 2015

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 1433cm Posted on Tuesday 10th March 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The snow has started to fall, although it's not all that heavy yet. A bit if wind, too - but things look to get much more interesting from later today/tonight. The snowfall may pick up as the winds really come blowing in. If it's as high as some weather sites are predicting, expect some closures of the lifts, especially the gondolas at Akakan and Suginohara, and the No. 3 at Suginohara (which, sorry, I misidentified yesterday as the Akakan No. 5 having shut down due to wind, when it was Suginohara). There is a super-big low pressure area forming off of Hokkaido, which will bring some very strong winds across the Sea of Japan. It will be nice to have some fresh snow to ski on, but it might be a day or two until it's calm enough to enjoy it.
