It has been a while since my last report from Hakuba and it has got quite a lot colder since then and the odd bit of snow dusting the tops of the mountains as well. This morning it is a chilly 8 degrees here in the village early on and a thick blanket of cloud low down covering the village... from where I am now I can't see much other than this cloud. But go just a bit higher up the mountain side and you break through the clouds and it looks like we will be in for a fine day here in Hakuba. A high of around 14 degrees is forecast for later on in the day. What's more interesting is what is just around the corner. It does look like from tomorrow we will see a lot of rain here in the village but higher up temperatures will be in minus territory and we should see potentially a decent amount of snow fall up there. How much and how far down it will come, we'll just have to see but it does look likely to be the strongest hint of winter yet. Exciting stuff! Reports from now on will be more regular as we approach the season. Oh yes, resort opening dates. Here's the official word, all depending on how snow of course. The resorts that hope to open within November are usually good at opening as soon as they can when there's enough snow. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . After a milder spell of weather, this morning I bring good news from Hakuba with another layer of snow on the ground. There's around 20cm or so fallen by the roads in the valley. It started snowing yesterday morning and by late morning the ski jump at Happo - which is where I happened to be - was all white. The snow eased up later in the day but Hakuba 47 was reporting 20cm of snow at the Gondola summit station and 30cm up at 1450m... they were calling it 'heavy' snow. This morning they are talking of 40cm down at base They are on standby to pretty much open as quickly as possible now. Hopefully very soon. Back to the weather. The snow seems to be easing off now and the local forecast is for cloudy conditions today. Not that much snow lined up on the weekly forecast into next week as it stands at the moment, but we know how easily that can change. UPDATED AT 4:45PM: Happo-one have announced that they will be opening (or 'pre-opening'!) tomorrow - the Gondola will be taking the first people up the mountain at 8:30am tomorrow morning with the Panorama pair lift and Kokusai Number 3 lifts also starting their season at 8:40am. Looks like it is special lift ticket price time - 2500 yen for adults and 1500 yen for children. Hakuba Goryu are also opening tomorrow with the top Panorama course open, serviced by the Gondola and the Alps No1 pair lift. The Gondola will open at 8:30am. They are reporting an impressive 1m of snow up top there. It's 2400 yen for adults and 1250 yen for children. Hakuba 47 plans to have Line E lift open on Saturday and Sunday. Looking like it will clear up tomorrow but hey, it's 'season in'! Tsugaike Kogen is currently planning to open from Saturday. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . There's not a whole lot to report this morning - the third day of the season for Happo! A lovely day yesterday with fine blue skies for most of the day. It is a more cloudy start to the day today, but still bright and a few patches of blue sky showing through. Temps dipped into minus numbers overnight but today we are looking at a high of around 10 degrees in the village. So it's rather mild just now. Tomorrow - even warmer, with rain. The remaining bits of snow in the village may well get washed away with that. Not to fear. The prospects for some significant snowfall are looking rather good from Wednesday onwards. From Tuesday look for temps dipping and then a start to another cold blast and deposit of snow from later on in the day on Wednesday. Hopefully sooner, though possibly heavy rain up front before the snow is probably. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . The lifts are moving, 2013-2014 is on! So this morning the Gondolas at Goryu and Happo-one kicked the season off in Hakuba at 8:30am, at least with what Happo are calling 'pre-open'. Sounds like open to me that - it's just the Panorama course at Happo and the actually the same named course over at Goryu. No new snowfall to report since yesterday in the village and there's a lot of cloud hanging around this morning but resorts reporting some snowfall on higher elevations. There seems to be a chance of some snowfall especially higher up today but we are looking at clearer weather for the weekend and a run of milder days going into next week. For the moment it is +3C in the village area now. From tomorrow some more of Happo should be open (more of the top area) as well as the first lifts moving over at Tsugaike Kogen. It will all depend on the weather and snow conditions of course, but from now on we can expect those resorts to try and open up as much as is possible. We'll try to keep you updated on the situation every day from now on. Have fun if you can get out there today. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . We continue to wait on snow with limited operations continuing at Happo-one, 47, Goryu and Tsugaike Kogen. Actually, Hakuba 47 seem to be reporting 5cm of fresh up top this morning, though nothing lower down. Yesterday we had some very strong winds blowing about which interrupted lifts. But this morning it is much calmer. The calm before the storm hopefully, with decent snowfall forecast for tomorrow and Friday. I hope to be able to bring news of fresh snow and colder conditions soon. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Not a huge amount of snow this morning but a nice cover early on... great to see snow back in the village. It has since for the most part disappeared from these lower areas but snow is still falling this morning up on the mountains with it due to continue into tomorrow - we might get another coating down here as well by tomorrow morning. After that clearer and warmer weather conditions are likely on Thursday and more nice weather due over the weekend. It will be warming up again as well over the weekend with temps very possibly hitting double digits. Light snow has been falling this morning in the valley and more no doubt up there on the mountains too where I am hearing conditions are quite windy too with poor visibility in places. The resorts that are already open though seem to be unaffected and open as planned with a few more lifts running this morning at Hakuba Goryu, Hakuba Happo-one and Tsugaike Kogen. Please keep an eye on the resort specific information below as it is being updated every day. Apologies if the reports are a little later than usual at the moment - there is such a lot of information to check every morning. It will be a big help and relief to everyone once all of the resorts can be 'fully open'! Back to the snow and there has been around 5cm of fresh around base areas and resorts are reporting around 10-15cm of new snowfall this morning. The forecast tells us to expect clouds to clear by this afternoon and before it gets dark we might get some sun but it should remain cold for the day. Tomorrow should be clear and sunny with a high temperature perhaps around 5 degrees. Looking ahead a bit further, is that rain on Monday? It might well be down at base anyway as it gets slightly warmer again but as we approach Christmas it looks as if there's promise of some fresh snow. It has been a difficult start to the season for sure. Seasons are long though so a late start doesn't write the story of the whole season. Hopefully Santa might have something big up his sleeve for us! In the meantime we just need to enjoy what we have. Hope you have a good weekend wherever you are. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It's snowing! Yes, it's coming down nicely at the moment. I was just up by the base of Hakuba 47 and there was around 20cm of fresh underfoot. Less of that in the central village areas but 15cm outside my place. The snow started last night but has really turned into decent snowfall from early this morning. If it keeps on snowing like this then we can expect more lifts and courses to be open for the weekend... if it's not too windy. Snow is forecast through today and tomorrow as well with clearer skies due on Sunday. Strong winds on mountain are actually preventing Happo-one and Tsugaike Kogen to open their lifts as planned at the time of writing this report, though it looks like Hakuba Goryu are going ahead as planned. All subject to change of course. Post weekend clearer weather conditions will prevail so we want as much as possible over the next two days. --- Resorts that are currently at least part open Hakuba 47: Hakuba 47 reporting 15-20cm at base and higher up - surely more up there! The base area of Hakuba 47 base is not yet open but the top area of Goryu/47 is open. Get up there via the Hakuba Goryu gondola. 2500 yen for adults, 1350 yen for children. Planned lifts: Line E will be closed today as the resort supplements the real snow with artificial snow (hopefully that won't actually be needed!) The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba and there's more snow to report - generally resorts are reporting 15-30cm of snow from lower to upper areas, less than that since my last report at base here. With this new snowfall there is more terrain and lifts opening up from this morning. I have added the details below under each resort. It's great to see more opening up. Remember - early season things can change quickly so for the very latest if you are going best to check the official resort websites. We might get more snow down to village today though with temperatures heading to around 5 degrees it might be rain - but probably snow on the mountains. At this moment though there is even a bit of sunshine breaking through the cloud in places. Unfortunately beyond today we are looking at more settled and fine weather. 'Fine' as in a good chance of sun and clear skies, and that is due to last for most of the week by the looks of things. Still the season is going and there is snow to play in. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It's a stunner of a morning here in Hakuba. Some cloud around but lots of blue sky and bright sunshine. While it was snowing lightly on the mountains for much of yesterday, there's not as much fresh snow to report as we would have liked (though we always want more, don't we?!). Resorts generally reporting just a bit lower down and up to around 10cm in higher areas. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Yesterday morning the wind was messing about with things - happily today there's no wind problem and as far as I can tell resorts opening as planned. It's a pretty complicated picture as well actually, with more runs and lifts gradually opening up as resorts try to cope with the large number of people that are here wanting to enjoy sliding down the snow. I have seen more than a few frustrated people around in the last few days not happy with lack of clear information and at times long queues to get on lifts. To be fair to the resorts, they are generally trying to cope as best they can - this gradual arrival of snow at this late stage is not making it the easiest situation to deal with. Still, personally I wish that lift staff would insist on having people get on lifts together and not sending up a quad with for example just 1 or 2 people on it... New Year is fast approaching with lots more people arriving. Expect crowds! Try to keep smiling! This morning it's a mix of snow clouds with snow falling in places, but we are expecting a mostly cloudy day. There's even a glimpse of sunshine in places. It's keeping cold with temperatures remaining around zero and it's not due to warm up any either. Tomorrow should also remain cold with more cloudy conditions, with perhaps even some clearer skies. Some forecasts even talk of sunshine. The next snow after looks due around the evening of New Years Eve but as we head into the New Year milder conditions are likely. With the New Year just a few days away, it's certainly not great that most lower areas are either still not open or struggling. We can just hope that early January brings with it lots more snow and this start to the season is not representative of the whole season. Unfortunately there is of course nothing we can do about the weather. So let's accept it and enjoy what we can. Best advice is to head high! Take care out there and enjoy. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . A fabulously happy morning to you from Hakuba where snow is arriving in style. About 12cm here outside my place but resorts reporting some very good numbers from the slopes. Here's the numbers (of fresh snowfall) that are available: Hakuba 47 - 10cm base, 40cm upper areas Hakuba Goryu - 15cm Toomi, 20cm Iimori, 35cm upper Hakuba Cortina - 20-30cm of fresh snow I have updated what seems to be open at resorts in the areas below so please check those details out. The good news is that Hakuba Cortina are able to open today as well as Hakuba Iwatake and there are more lifts and courses at other resorts now opening up. With the snow continuing to fall and resorts keen to open up as much as possible as quickly as possible, it's a situation that will be changing rapidly. Happo-one seems to be having a problem with their website (overload?) and somewhat struggling to get clear info out but they planned to have the Skyline Number 2 pair lift and Skyline Course open from this morning. I am also hearing of issues with the Kokusai Number 1 lift this morning but it may be back up and running soon. To get up to the upper area, use either the Kita One quad lift or Gondola. Apologies for the later report this morning. There's just so much information to check (and not all of it the easiest to find either). I hope that what I'm providing this morning is a fairly clear picture of the situation. Oh for the day when every resort in the area is finally 'FULLY OPEN'! Hopefully that is now not too far off. I'm sure we are all looking forward to it. (Phew!) Oh yes, after all that forgot to say: snow forecast for day with limited visibility on the slopes.
