By the road in village - 10-20cm Hakuba 47 - 35cm Hakuba Goryu - 30cm Happo-one - 50cm! Tsugaike now have 172cm as the official number for up top (with a curious just 10cm down at base). Sounds good to me! These numbers are what the resorts are reporting this morning, with Happo's 50cm sounding particularly impressive. It's probably panic stations right at this moment around the valley as resorts deal with the snow and decide what to do, but I would very much expect more areas to very quickly open up now... though I can't confirm any changes just at the moment. Poor visibility out there, but deep conditions to be found for those craving them. Snow is expected to continue through into the weekend and so it should be piling up very nicely. Hakuba Goryu: Reporting 30cm of fresh snow this morning on upper slopes. Upper - 100cm Iimori - -cm Toomi - -cm Lifts operating: Gondola, Alps Number 1, Alps Number 3. Upper slope area open. Always more, of course, but for now here's the headlines that we have this morning for snowfall on upper slopes: Happo-one - 60cm Hakuba 47 - 40cm Hakuba Goryu - 40cm Tsugaike Kogen - added more than 40cm since yesterday Hakuba Cortina - 30cm Bottom line... lots and lots of snow falling on mountain. There's some wind today though which may affect some lifts - the Gondola and a few lifts at Happo were affected just before but are now operating. Visibility is fairly poor out on the mountain this morning with all this snow falling, though not quite as mad as yesterday. The snow may well continue for today and into tomorrow before easing off. We might even get to see some sun on Tuesday. Looking good for more snow later in the week again though. It all came at once, but we couldn't really ask for more at the moment. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Clouds remain over Hakuba this morning, but the clouds are trying to give us more snow rather than just sitting there like they were yesterday. Resorts around the valley are reporting new snowfall, albeit rather small numbers ranging from 1cm to 10cm. So a thin new layer of snow can be expected out on the slopes this morning. Just a bit of (wet) snow down at village level and it is snowing lightly now. Snow is forecast on and off for the day and tomorrow, perhaps into the weekend. Early next week looks set to be drier and finer conditions, so all fingers crossed for the next few days. In some resort news this morning, the Sakka quad lift will be opening from tomorrow at Happo, with all of their lifts and courses scheduled to be open and up and running from Saturday (first lifts Nakayama Number 3 and the Gondola starting at 7:30am). With Christmas and New Year approaching, we can expect resorts to do whatever they can to open up as much as possible (obviously). Hopefully weather will co-operate and make it easy for them. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . A very nice surprise this morning with more of a snow haul than we were perhaps expecting in Hakuba. Hakuba 47 are reporting 20-30cm of fresh snow at base and 50cm up top. Hakuba Goryu are reporting 30cm at Toomi and 40cm on upper areas. Happo reporting 50cm and more higher up. (See below if you would like to win a lift ticket for Happo!) I am observing at least 30cm myself here as well. Basically, lots of snow again which should make for excellent conditions this weekend. Earlier on it was much more cloudy but it actually seems to be brightening up in places at the moment with the snow easing off... even a bit of sun. Could it clear up? 'Hakuba' is pretty much all open as well from today, with most or all lifts and courses open at resorts around the village, so wherever you choose to slide it should be very good. Snow should continue today into tomorrow morning, with clearer skies early in the week. Have fun. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . And yes... more snow. 10cm or so here in the valley, resorts reporting 10-30cm or so again on lower/upper slopes. Actually, no, Hakuba Cortina have come up with their usual impressive numbers with 40-50cm of new snowfall reported over there. Tsugaike Kogen numbers have taken a good jump as well. Those of you in the know of course will know that those two resorts are actually in Otari village, next to Hakuba village. But we like to include them in here as they are part of the 'Hakuba' picture. It's a wide area of course and snowfall can vary quite considerably from one area to the other. We'll try to keep on top of how things are going in the different areas. Just in case you haven't noticed, do keep an eye on the "new snow reported" numbers that we will post in the lists below every day. If there isn't a number there, it's either because the resorts haven't been telling people, or we don't have the number in time at the time of the report going up. And of course we'll be sure to say when it's 0cm too. Oh yes, we don't just talk about things when they are good here. That's how it should be, right? Though obviously it is always much nicer to be able to report good conditions and new snowfall of course! OK sorry, back to today-specific news. I didn't mention yesterday, but nighta operations started in the valley yesterday. Hakuba Goryu is open each night from 6pm until 9:30pm. The nighta at Happo isn't open yet but they will get started asap. There was nighta last night at Tsugaike as well, and today too... also at Cortina. Today started off as yesterday ended really with snow falling. It does seem to be perhaps clearing up though mid-morning. Looking at the forecast, we have clearer conditions on the way. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . By lunchtime yesterday it had become more grey than blue as it clouded over, though visibility remained decent on the resorts. Out on the slopes yesterday, fairly heavy conditions outside of the main courses giving the old leg muscles a good work out, though the groomers were a lot of fun. We got rained on a bit last night down in the village but this morning light snowfall is being reported from the resorts around the valley as noted below. Hakuba 47 are giving us up to 10cm on upper slopes, but curiously the connected Goryu say 0cm... with just a thin layer down on the Iimori side. I'm glad to report that it is snowing now, still a bit 'wet' lower down, but hopefully it will be snowing through the day and tomorrow. Temperatures look set to drop later today and then keep cold tomorrow. We could really do with some more good consistent snowfall to freshen things up and the weekly forecast seems promising to give us just that. A quick look at the webcams from around the resorts this morning and I can see that visibility is pretty poor up there at the moment. Or not see, as the case may be! Not much to see at all. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Mostly cloudy and foggy up on the mountains yesterday, light snow falling at times, though some sunny spells in the village and glimpses of the sun depending where you were later in the afternoon. Varying snowfall reports from across the valley this morning, ranging from 0cm to 40cm. Wind has played it's part in those numbers this morning but Goryu are talking about 20cm of fresh snow on upper slopes and Hakuba Cortina winning the 'most snow' competition this morning with up to 40cm reported over there since yesterday. Visibility is generally better this morning than yesterday though still limited in places. Snow is falling down to village level this morning and temperatures remain cold. In fact, it's a very cold morning here with temperatures remaining at around -4C mid morning. It'll be minus double figures up there. Snow clouds forecast to never be far away through into New Year now, though it does seem to be a case that it should be variable conditions each day rather than full on blizzard. Weather conditions seem to be affecting a few lifts this morning including the top Grat quad lift at Happo-one and the top part of the Gondola and top Tsuga Number 2 lift at Tsugaike Kogen. Lifts at 47/Goryu seem to be operating as normal and not affected. In resort news, nighta operations start today on the Nakiyama runs of Happo-one. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba and a very Happy New Year to you all. Did you have fun on the last evening of the year? Snowy conditions to start off 2014. Just a light cover in village, and resorts around the valley reporting a few up to 10cm on higher elevations this morning. It's snowing now and pretty good too. As I am writing this it's coming down in style, nice big flakes too. Temperature is down there and it's a cold morning, currently around -3 degrees. Not much of a wind but the snowfall is making for generally poor visibility on the slopes. Snow should ease off tomorrow and we might get to see clearer conditions on Friday. You'll be seeing lots of small special events and things going on today to celebrate the New Year. The Janken-taikai (rock-paper-scissors) competition at Hakuba 47 at noon sounds particularly exciting! ;) Failing that, just get out to enjoy a first slide of the year. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . More snow to report this Sunday morning in Hakuba. Perhaps around 5cm or so in the village, and resorts around the valley reprting 10-20cm on the mountain (as noted in the lists below - keep an eye on those as we will update them every day). Yesterday was mostly cloudy with snow falling at times and visibility decreasing in the afternoon and heavier snow - that's what happened over at Iwatake anyway, which is where I was. A quick look at the webcams from around the skijo and it looks like a similar story at other places too. This morning is a different story with beautiful clear blue skies above Hakuba. There's still a layer of cloud hiding the mountain peaks this morning but they'll staying about the resort areas. It's a cold start to the day with temperatures at 9am keeping at around the overnight point of -5C. Fresh snow overnight, just a slight breeze and fine clear conditions this morning. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It was a very busy day out on most of the slopes in the valley yesterday. Generally fine weather conditions with the sun remaining out over the village for most of the day and a bank of cloud staying put higher on the mountains. Some strong winds affected some lifts in the afternoon. Snow started falling earlier this morning with a cm or so at base and resorts reporting 5-10cm higher up - the most being reported by Hakuba Goryu who say there has been up to 20cm on the upper slopes there. It's still snowing now and hopefully will be through tomorrow. Unclear how much we are due to get really, so we'll just have to wait and see and pray for a fluffy white New Year. Today will be another busy one - both during the day on the slopes and in the evening in the bars and restaurants around the village. Hope you have a fun and safe New Years Eve and let's start again tomorrow morning for 2014. Which will of course be the snowiest year on record. Maybe. It clouded over a fair bit yesterday during the day, especially in the afternoon, with the sun making it's last appearance of the day around mid-afternoon. It's a cloudier start to the day as well this morning. Some patches of blue sky up there, just a light wind. Temperatures dipped to around -4 degrees in the village overnight and at 8:30am it is about -3 degrees. More sun is forecast for later and a high of around +2. Overnight we got just a few cm or so of new snow at base with up to 10cm being reported by resorts on upper runs this morning. Hopefully there will be more snow to report tomorrow morning as well. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . We did eventually get rained on yesterday, but up on the mountains it was snowing by mid afternoon and we have some fresh cm this morning. Goryu reporting 10-25cm, Hakuba 47 reporting 20-30cm, Cortina reporting 15-30cm, Tsugaike adding 20cm to it's tally. That probably gives a good idea of what to expect. The snow is somewhat wet and heavy here at village level but hopefully lighter as you get higher. And snow should be falling throughout the day today even if it looks like from tomorrow it might become more sporadic rather than consistently falling from the skies. Having said that, down here at village there are even signs of a bit of blue sky and the sun at times. But as I said, forecast is for cloud/snow. It's still not that cold this morning and currently around 0 degrees at base. We will probably see temperatures drop from this afternoon and tomorrow be much colder.
