Snow started falling around mid afternoon yesterday to everyone's delight, and this morning here's what resorts are reporting as a result: Hakuba Cortina reporting 10-15cm of fresh snow this morning. Hakuba Goryu reporting 5cm of fresh snow on lower areas and 15cm on upper slopes. Hakuba 47 reporting 10cm of fresh snow this morning. Hakuba Happo-one reporting 8cm of fresh snow this morning. So around 5cm of fresh snow at base areas, and up to 15cm higher up. Not bad at all, and people heading out for early lifts this morning will be happy. I'm off out there myself to enjoy this late season fresh... The weather is fine too this morning. Currently hovering around 0C and a bit of an early morning mix at the moment - cloud, blue sky, sunshine, fog - depending on where you are, but with the chance of more snow today and perhaps tomorrow as well it will be interesting to see how the day turns out. Temperatures look set to start rising once again from around Monday. Hakuba 47: Hakuba 47 reporting 10cm of fresh snow this morning. All courses at Hakuba 47 remain open. The Tree Riding Zone is closed. Official snow depth: Upper: 185cm Base: 70cm Hakuba Goryu: Hakuba Goryu reporting 5cm of fresh snow on lower areas and 15cm on upper slopes. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. After the decent weather in the morning, we got some light rain starting to fall later in the day yesterday... boooo! But this morning that's far from our minds as we are being treated to a beautiful clear morning. Just before 9am it's 6C with the temps rising to maybe around 14C later on here at village base. Blue skies and sunshine all around, and this fine weather is forecast to be with us for the next few days along with warm conditions. Later on Saturday and Sunday rain is there on the forecast - could it perhaps snow at higher elevations perhaps? If we're lucky perhaps. Probably best to just expect rain. Hakuba 47: All courses at Hakuba 47 remain open. The Tree Riding Zone is now closed for the season. Official snow depth: Upper: 170cm Base: 55cm Hakuba Goryu: Top area remains open. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from here in Hakuba. It was a decent morning but rain started falling early in the afternoon yesterday, as expected. And as can only be expected, the rain hasn't done the snow conditions -- and indeed the amount of snow still remaining -- any favours unfortunately. There's lots of cloud around this morning with fog as well. And while we were hoping for things to be dry, light rain is still with us early morning unfortunately. Hopefully things will dry up fairly quickly though. Lifts either seem to be shrouded in low visibility conditions and cloud. The forecast actually says that we may well be seeing some sun during the day today, and similarly tomorrow. Thanks to my friend up in Niseko for providing an explanation of Golden Week in his Niseko Now reports on SnowJapan: 'Golden Week' is fast approaching. So what exactly is Golden Week? For those of you who don't know, Golden Week is a number of national holidays that happen close to each other giving lots of people a nice holiday in late April and early May. Most tourist spots get very busy as a result! Depending on what days they fall, some years it is a considerably long period. This year, the actual national holidays are 'Showa Day' on Friday 29th April, 'Constitution Day' on Tuesday 3rd May, 'Greenery Day' on Wednesday 4th May and 'Children's Day' on Thursday May 5th. This means that this year Golden Week looks like this: * Friday 29th April - Sunday 1st May (3 day long weekend) * Tuesday 3rd May - Thursday 5th May (3 day holiday mid-week) * Saturday 7th May - Sunday 8th May (normal weekend) No doubt some folk will be taking Monday 2nd May and Friday 6th May as a holiday as well giving them a 10 day break. There's no ski lifts moving this morning as far as I can tell due to strong winds up there and so it has to be something other than skiing or snowboarding. Doesn't look like there's much chance of that changing either... Wind aside it's sunny and a fine morning! More sun is expected tomorrow and more importantly, less wind, so at least places should be open as planned. Some more rain might be falling before/during Sunday as well, so if I were choosing one day over the weekend it would be Saturday. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Hurray! We got snow! Good morning from Hakuba. And yes, fresh snow has actually been falling down to village level overnight and there is a couple of cm of it on my car as well. A very nice sight to see, though I would get out early as it will no doubt not last long. Goryu is reporting 2cm of fresh on the upper slopes with Hakuba 47 reporting 1-3cm. It is cold this morning and still snowing as I write this and while it is probably going to keep cold for the day, clearer skies are forecast for this afternoon. Tomorrow and beyond we expect warmer conditions once again and more sunshine. For now though, it's snowing! I need to get up there to see what that fresh snow feeling is like again! The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . After the mostly cloudy but warm weather of yesterday, it's raining this morning both here at base and up top too, as we expected really. Expect some soft snow conditions this morning but temperatures not to be quite as warm as yesterday. It doesn't look like it's going to really belt it down with rain, but waterproofs recommended. Hopefully the rain will ease off later on early afternoon. Tomorrow and Wednesday should see a return to sunny skies before more rain due on Thursday. Hakuba 47: Most courses at Hakuba 47 remain open. The lower part of R1 course has now closed - but the resort is still open top to bottom. Beginners are recommended to use the Gondola to get back to base. The Tree Riding Zone is now closed for the season. It is quite chilly too this morning with temperatures down into single digits. Tomorrow should be warmer and the sun should be with us especially in the morning. Some forecasts have rain later in the day tomorrow while others don't so we'll just have to wait and see on that. Golden Week holidays this year: * Friday 29th April - Sunday 1st May (3 day long weekend) * Tuesday 3rd May - Thursday 5th May (3 day holiday mid-week) * Saturday 7th May - Sunday 8th May (normal weekend) Hakuba 47: Only the top Route 8 course by Line E lift remains open (along with the top Panorama course of Hakuba Goryu). The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Morning from Hakuba, and it's rain this morning I'm afraid - rain also being reported from the upper slopes this morning as well. We've had enough rain for April so far I reckon... enough! Very poor visibility most of the places that remain open early this morning. Good news for weekend visitors though as the rain should be easing off soon (by lunchtime?) and by tomorrow we'll be enjoying clear skies and sunshine. That's what the forecast tells us anyway. Temperature might not rise to 10 degrees today but will break through and rise to up to around 15 degrees tomorrow afternoon. Sunday should generally be fine soon. Here's to a fun full-on spring weekend. --- Hakuba Goryu: Hakuba Goryu plans to be at least part open until Sunday 10th May. Hakuba Goryu Telecabin Gondola, Alps Number 1 and 3 pair lifts operating. Can still ski down to base using Toomi area. The lower Iimori area is now closed. - Alps Daira - 210cm - Toomi - 50cm --- Hakuba 47: Hakuba 47 plans to be at least part open until Wednesday 6th May. Currently all open (top to bottom) apart from a small lower part of R7. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Light rain is falling early on this morning I'm afraid, though it looks like it should be stopping fairly soon and leaving us with just cloudy skies. I'm not hearing any reports of any snowfall by the way. There's some thick cloud hanging around some upper mountain areas at the moment and poor visibility but perhaps that will also improve quite quickly this morning. A high of around 8 degrees is forecast for the village today, so not warming up that much. Tomorrow will be warmer with a good chance of sun and clear skies in the morning. --- Hakuba Goryu: Hakuba Goryu plans to be at least part open until Wednesday 6th May. Hakuba Goryu Telecabin Gondola, Alps Number 1 and 3 pair lifts operating. Can still ski down to base using Toomi area. The lower Iimori area is now closed. - Alps Daira - 235cm - Toomi - 70cm --- Hakuba 47: Hakuba 47 plans to be at least part open until Wednesday 6th May. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba and here we are on April 8th and I have some snowfall to report. Back to yesterday first and it was light rain on and off during the day but quite a cold day... with snow later on! This morning Happo-one report 5cm of fresh snow and Hakuba 47 are reporting 3-5cm as well. Just a bit down at base areas. It kind of feels a bit like early season this morning. A bit more please. Not deep of course bit it'll be fun to try out a bit of fresh for a change. Things are due to start warming up again from tomorrow to remind us that it's getting on for mid-April. Hopefully we'll be able to avoid rain over the weekend. --- Hakuba Goryu: Hakuba Goryu plans to be at least part open until Wednesday 6th May. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It's just a quick early report this morning from Hakuba. More snow on the ground this morning with Cortina reporting 10-20cm and Hakuba 47 just a few cm at base and up to 10cm on the mountain. So there should be fresh out there with snow forecast for the day today and overnight, clearing up tomorrow. We'll probably be back to sunny skies by the weekend. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba and to the last Hakuba Now report of 14/15 on this last day of the season for Hakuba Happo-one and Hakuba Goryu. There's a lot of cloud around the mountains this morning, though a step back and we can see some blue sky from the village and fine weather is forecast so maybe the cloud will clear up. It's been considerably cooler yesterday and overnight - has been a quite chilly start to the day today - and a real contrast to that hot run of weather we had just a short while back. No doubt temperatures will be rising again in the coming weeks. Strong winds higher up look like they might well stopp the lifts - at least at Goryu - at the start of the day, so please contact the resorts for the latest updates if you plan to get out today. Would be a shame if the weather spoilt the last day. Whatever happens weather-wise, at the end of today the last lifts at the ski resorts in the area will stop moving for the season. There's still snow up there on the mountains of course and no doubt some will be hiking up there - hopefully all with experienced friends, preparation and care. So here we are at the end of a long season. I remember before the ski lifts opened that rather strong earthquake that shook our area on 22nd November. It was not the start that everyone wanted of course. While it certainly caused serious problems for a group of people, luckily for Hakuba generally the damage was not widespread and aftershocks soon eased off. It was really great to see how the community pulled together. The season got going and December saw lots of snow falling and some really great conditions... that always asked question 'when is the best time to visit' never gets easier to answer. Lots more people visited Hakuba from all corners of the world again this last season and that trend will only continue in the coming years. And here we are now well into May. For a good look back at the season that was I recommend taking a read through the archived daily Hakuba Now reports. Remember, you can also read through archived reports from previous seasons as well. All of those are easily accessed from the links at the bottom of this page - go take a look. Once you've read through all that lot, perhaps you can try to make up your own mind on how to best answer that 'when is the best time to visit' question! If you plan on visiting Hakuba over summer - highly recommended by the way - remember that the weather forecasts that are shown on the resort pages of SnowJapan are updated throughout the year.
