The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It's back: the snow started falling this morning, and it's going hard at the moment. About 20cm has fallen so far, and it keeps coming down. Why it took so long to get Myoko-like, we don't know, but we don't - as long as we get more on the ground we're happy, in this crazy year of nothing expected. It is pretty heavy snow, it has to be said. The resort reports are in the minus, but it's pretty mild. That's not entirely bad, of course; some heavy snow might improve things in the backcountry, and weigh down those trees that are still sticking up. Hope to have a bigger figure for the total snowfall by tomorrow. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The sun's out again - this is getting a bit repetitive this year! A little snow, then a day of sun. Nothing anything to improve the snowpack, as today's figures show. Even Seki Onsen has started to bring the figures down (although, the 300cm figure still shows that little resort's eternal optimism. Love you guys). I'm also sad to see the potential heavier snow toward the end of the week has once again diminished to "snow showers" and "light snow," terms I have come to hate. Mostly because this year, light snow really means little light crystals that hardly amount to anything, where in most years we'd have light fall of typical big flakes, and maybe 10cm. THAT is light snow. OK, I'm getting pessimistic and gloomy again, and it is, after all a nice sunny day, and we're in one of the lovely places of the earth, right? Looking out my window, I also realize that the brush has indeed slowly gotten pushed down a bit by the creeping snow, so it might be fun to get out on snowshoes or light touring skis, even if most of the backcountry still is pretty hard to get through in sections. it just doesn't look like late February.... Oh, but I am adding some snow from yesterday; there was more than 1cm, especially a little bit to the north, and a bit more added on. Just to keep us honest, truthful and accurate. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Unbelievable: Myoko-style snow has returned. The weather report got me with that "snow showers" stuff, but we have 41cm (where I measured in a non-wind-blown spot) and solid snowfall continuing. One time I'm glad the forecasts didn't get it right. Pretty strong winds through the night have left some drifts; could be some wind loading higher up the mountain, so do be a little cautious if you're skiing up high. Otherwise, I'm just sitting here watch it come down at a rate of about a centimeter per hour; just hopes it keeps on going throughout the day. And also watching the areas report an increase in snowpack; always something we like to see. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A quick report, as I'm out in town today... pretty gray out there, with fog and some very light snow coming down from time to time. VERY light, as in just a dusting on the trees. The wind offshore has swung around to the north/northeast, which doesn't really result in much snow - if it comes more from the west we'd have uplift over the mountains, and probably more snowfall here. At least snow is on the menu for the coming days with only a little bit of clear predicted, and even the possibility of heavy snow later in the week. Personally I'd like to see it; it was pretty icy on the slopes yesterday. Powder over chatter, please. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The sun is out, mostly, this morning with a few flakes drifting down from time to time. Nice snow up higher yesterday, although it was pretty heavy lower (but good skiing onpiste). It's staying cold today; that rise in the freezing line is going to start on Friday, so get out before then (also Saturday, before Sunday's rain, could be a nice spring day). Speaking of spring, I have some local knowledge to share. My newspaper guy/snowthrower repairman/hotel owner came by to change the fan belt on the snowthrower and gave the common knowledge on potential snowfall for the rest of the month/season. The first early fall of March can be a big one, but we probably can't expect much more. The exceptions, says folk knowledge, is White Day (March 14) and one more day that I thought he said was Newspaper Day, but that could only be Sports Newspaper Day (March 6 - not likely). That actually links up pretty well with other predictions that the snow is going to be disappearing early this year. So I says, go out and get it while you can. It's nice out today, with snowy trees and nice white cover everywhere. With rain and wind, the snow figures could go down fast. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A great start to March, with 60cm of snow on the ground (hard to tell, really, as there was a lot of wind involved through the night). Sorry not to post earlier, but the snow also meant I got called out to play with the heavy metal (I love little bulldozers), especially since I still need to change a fan belt on the snow thrower - which is really more convenient, but it's nice to sit and work in a warm cab). The snow continues to fall, and it's nice and cold. Really feels like winter in Myoko. Late though it may be, it's still welcome. Time to enjoy it, because once again we'll see the freezing line rise up on the weekend to 2000 meters or more. We keep seeing this in the 2016 season, and I hope we won't in 2017. The word from the mountain is good, light snow up high. With all that wind - we had cornices and windloading around the house - be careful on lee slopes up there. If you don't know what I mean, time to do a little study before you go out! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The day started with high winds during the night, and moved into (ugh) rain earlier. But, as predicted, that freezing line is coming down the hill fast, and we are now seeing light snow outside. We have some pretty strong winds coming in offshore from the west, which hopefully is a good sign that we might end February with solid snowfall later in the day. Those winds already brought the snowpack down a bit, so any snow now is really welcome (needed, even). And even as I'm writing here, the winds are shifting around a bit to the west, and the snow is starting to pick up. Looks really good out there. Hope to be back tomorrow with some good news. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Another jaw dropper: it kept on snowing overnight and into the morning! It looks like... it looks like a good December out there (we have no snow walls to mention this year). It's not particularly heavy at the moment, but it is falling steadily, and that has meant another 25cm by morning. And, of course, this is the day that the snowthrower threw its fan belt.... Well, we can always find some sort of machinery to deal with the snow; the important thing is that it is snowing out there, and the resorts are reporting an increase in snow cover. After a season of writing grim snow reports, I have this warm feeling inside. If this keeps up, maybe we'll have some spring skiing, and resorts staying open as planned (not to jinx anything; the snowpack really is low, and one good south wind with rain can eat a sizeable portion of it!). The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Not much snow overnight - I'll be generous and say we had 2cm - but it has started up again in the last few minutes. I notice that some of the ski areas are showing +10cm or so, so perhaps there was more snow higher up during the day. It was coming down pretty hard during the Yama no Kami (mountain god) ceremony yesterday mid-slope at Akakura Kanko. Maybe a good sign for the rest of the season... at least, as all the local dignitaries there said, it wasn't raining. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Woke up to some fresh, if very wet, snow. It's still coming down, light but steady, although it's piling up as slush rather than snow at our location here (about 670 meters, just below Akakan). We have about 5cm on the ground, which looks about the same up on the hill (Akakan and Suginohara both added another 5cm to their snowpack figures today, too). We could be getting more light snow through the week, until that freezing line does start heading up again. At least there might be some sun before the possibility of rain on the weekend. At this point, it might as well be sunny and pleasant, since we most likely aren't going to see any major snowfall again this season. It's getting pretty foggy at the moment, too, but at least snow is involved.
