The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Overcast skies with a temperature of around -2C degrees and a light north westerly breeze 1m/s. But more importantly we have 20+ cm of fresh snow lying around the village. It snowed heavily all through the night and early morning, and now the snow has eased off. There are deep pockets of powder snow across the valley from Cortina, Tsugaike Kogen, Hakuba 47, Goryu and Happo-one. All nine resorts in the region will be enjoying last nights snowstorm, and from now no doubt so will all the people here to enjoy Christmas. It's always a pleasure to report the dumps over at Hakuba Cortina and today is one of those... 60cm of new snowfall according to the resort. Hakuba Goryu are reporting 20cm of new snow at base and up top, with Hakuba 47 getting 35cm. The most important thing is that the whole valley got a nice new layer overnight and hopefully more today. Bring it on, Santa-san! Vision has been poor in places with 'gas' has moving in from 8am but while I'm sure most of us would prefer the snow to continue, it does look like things are clearing up with more of the sun shining down on selected areas through the many remaining clouds. Visibility is going to depend on where you are for the moment at least - poor in some places, clear in others. Hope you can get to enjoy it! Over the village right now we have clouds but the sun making appearances from time to time as well and some blue sky as well. Snow showers on the mountains. Very mixed. Variable visibility this morning as well with some places looking like it's pretty good and in others it's thick fog/cloud... Strong winds are affecting lift operations around the valley in Hakuba and Otari this morning and we can probably expect that to continue for the day. Weather patterns seem unpredictable today - be prepared for last minute changes by the resorts. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Merry Christmas! Some great conditions being reported from yesterday, especially from Otari where they got a whole lot of snow as mentioned in the report yesterday. Stories of powder pockets up to 60cm waist deep over at Cortina and Tsugaike. Very nice. May there be many more of those this season, as no doubt there will be. Freezing temperatures early this morning in Hakuba village with temperatures down to minus double digits overnight and about -5C here in the village now. It's a cold one, for sure. The cloud has moved in over some parts of Hakuba with just a few glimpses of sunlight from time to time over the village. So it's cloudy in the village at the moment but snow showers possible throughout the day and snow forecast overnight into tomorrow. Beyond that it looks likely we'll see clearer conditions on Thursday and Friday. The heavy snow had an impact on some lift operations in the valley yesterday, so on days like that it is a good idea to check official resort websites for reports if lifts close/re-open. They can be found on the resort pages within SnowJapan. As much as we would like to be able to, we can't update this page in realtime. Anyway today we had roughly 1cm of fresh snowfall in the village and few cm higher up - 5cm+ was reported by ski patrol at Happo-one. There is just a slight wind and visibility is clear up to 1200m. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Lots of lovely fresh snow to report from Hakuba this morning. It started snowing yesterday around mid afternoon and as a result of that continuing overnight we have about 25-30cm or so down in the village. Hakuba Cortina wins in the new snow stakes with up to 35cm reported on their slopes. It's not that cold though definitely a milder feel to the morning and +1C here in central Hakuba and likely to rise to around 5C. Thick clouds cover the village this morning but hop on the ski lifts and go high up to be treated to some incredible views of that sea of cloud covering the valley and clear blue skies above it. The clouds will probably move on this morning and leave us with a fine day. It will stay mild tomorrow and rain is forecast for the village. Higher slopes to escape that and it should be snowing everywhere later and the snow clouds will be with us through into mid week. Heavy snow anyone? So there is lots of new snow to play in this morning - it's not the driest variety, but there should be some fine and very fun conditions to be found out there. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Well yesterday was... not the best day of the season so far. The rain didn't let up until later on giving us some pretty spring like conditions out there. The good news is the mountains have received a thin layer of new snow overnight as temperatures dropped and it turned into snow and there has been a sprinkling down in the valley as well, a few cm or so. It is much colder as well and back down into the minus numbers, currently about -3C in the village. It is snowing now down to village and looks like it is set to be snowing all day today and hopefully for the next few days as well... I'll see you tomorrow when I hope to bring news of the first fresh snow of 2013. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It's windy out on them there mountains this morning! And cold too, down to a chilly -7 even in the village. Expect temperatures down into the minus double digits on the mountain. This morning new snow to report from around the valley. Just a bit down in the village with up to 15cm at Hakuba Goryu and up to 10cm at Hakuba 47. Another 30-40cm is being reported by Hakuba Cortina this morning meaning that once again the Deep Award goes over to that resort in Otari. Oh, but shhh.... don't tell anyone! as some would say... ;) Upper lifts at Happo-one closed this morning due to the wind conditions. The Gondola and Line C at Hakuba 47 aren't moving yet and the top lifts at Goryu are prone to be affected. Changeable weather conditions this morning. Cloudy for the most part but breaks in the cloud and even some blue sky on show from time to time. Light snow is forecast for the day. Sunny conditions likely tomorrow and clearer conditions forecast into next week. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. The clouds stuck around for the most part yesterday. Early on it seems to be a case of cloudy on the south side of the valley and patches of blue to the North. Some shadows and the sun peeking through at times again. New snow of 1-5cm depending on your location around Hakuba. I would have thought more than that on upper slopes but apparently not, in Hakuba anyway. The Hakuba Cortina resort just to the north in Otari this morning is reporting up to 40cm of new snowfall this morning, so if that is to believed - and I have no reason to doubt it - then I know where I would be heading if I were having a day on the slopes. Tsugaike Kogen also apparently got a decent amount. It is a cold -6 degrees at the moment with a wind at 2m/s. It looks like it will clear later today with the sun beaming through the clouds over the mountains. The upper parts of the mountains should be lovely to ski and ride on today especially if that clears up. Clear skies tomorrow but it should hopefully stay cold. Still doesn't look like there's much snow on the horizon well into next week so we will have to make the most with what there is out there. Tomorrow is the first day of a three day weekend here in Japan, as Monday is a national holiday. We can expect things to get pretty busy out there. Early start recommended! The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It's another of those stunning bluebird days in Hakuba. Lucky people who are here at the moment. Lovely deep blue skies contrasting with the mountain backdrop. Nice. So much for the 'cloud' that was on the forecasts for today. The New Year holiday period is now pretty much over for most (all?) people in Japan and so it's 'back to normal', until next weekend perhaps... So all of the clouds of yesterday have moved on and it's clear as a bell out there today. Temperatures dipped down to -5C overnight in the village areas and will probably rise to around 0C today. I'm just taking a look at the forecast for the coming week, and it looks generally dry and no significant snowfall for the next few days. Generally clearer skies are on the menu for the week by the looks with temperatures around what they are today. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . One of the downsides of an early report like yesterday is that things sometimes end up rather different from early on. Like yesterday. The day ended up being much more cloudy that early on suggested and by late afternoon snow was falling on the mountain. Not enough to bring us news of new cm of snow though and ended up just being a dusting, so new fresh to report. Waiting for a fresh supply.... Predominantly blue skies and some clouds in the area this morning. The clouds that were nestling up there on the upper areas of the mountains have been dispersing and it has been getting clearer. There'll be some great views on show this morning. It was mild overnight with temperatures around the village in the positive and today it might end up being around 4C. It has been quite windy on the mountain. The gondola at Hakuba 47 was delayed but is now operating. The top Number 2 and 4 pair lifts at Goryu have been affected as well. Happo seems to be unaffected at the moment apart from the top Grat lift which is not yet moving today at the time of writing. So it's one of those days when top lifts may need to be stopped without notice, but the good news is that the forecast predicts less wind as the day progresses. So we should be ok. It's the second day of the three-day weekend and so as you might expect, busy out there! New snow? Should have some to report by tomorrow morning and tomorrow will likely be a snowy day. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It's a very early morning report from Hakuba today. Blue skies on show in places with the stunning mountains + cloudy scenery at times yesterday from the village. Depending on where you were on the mountains yesterday, you either got thick cloud or much clearer views of what was going on. Some very dramatic views on show though if you were in the right place. It is a cold start to the day, closing in on minus double digits outside, and with no new snowfall to report. The sun is due today though and temperatures may rise to just above the zero point later on in the day. Similar conditions likely tomorrow. For now though early on there is some thin cloud hanging around the region, but the mountains themselves are mostly clear of cloud. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Some snowfall to report overnight this morning with about 10cm or so on the ground in the village area here and resorts around Hakuba and Otari reporting between 5cm and 15cm of snow on the mountain. The snow continues as I write this. Visibility very poor this morning with the village covered in fog / cloud and actually seems to be better in places higher up. Currently it is -1C in Hakuba. Snow quality is quite heavy (as in 'moist') this morning and should change to lighter drier snow later on this afternoon and tonight as temperatures gradually drop throughout the day. Hardly any wind this morning but again the wind will probably pick up later in the day as well. Hopefully we'll get a good amount of snow today. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Heavy snow! It's our turn now with probably 30cm of new snowfall in the village since last report. Yesterday saw some pretty wild snow conditions in areas of Japan that aren't used to - or prepared for - snowfall. While this didn't directly cause any problems in Hakuba where we are used to snow, of course, there were some serious transportation problems for people heading back to Tokyo and region after the long weekend. Stories of people spending many hours in their cars and having to find places to stay overnight on the way home - journeys that usually take a few hours taking 10 hours, or even becoming impossible. Main access roads from yesterday are still closed in some areas, so it's still an ongoing situation. Interesting snowfall numbers from around the valley. Goryu and 47 report between 10-20cm; to the north in Otari, Hakuba Cortina are reporting 40-50cm of fresh snowfall since yesterday. (Though due to avalanche rise the Number 4 and Number 5 lifts and runs serviced by them at Hakuba Cortina are not operating today). It will be deep out there today. Overcast skies, continued snow and strong winds this mornin. The wind may affect lifts at some resorts this morning - at time of writing I can confirm the top area of Hakuba Goryu is on standby. One of those days when it's best to check with resorts for the up-to-minute situation. Some dangerous avalanche conditions out there with the new snowfall, especially in the Otari region. Wind-loaded lee slopes and cornices best avoided. Cool headed thinking necessary and extreme care advised outside of resort areas. Be careful out there. Things should have calmed down by this evening and we might get to see the sun tomorrow.
