  • Zao Now: Monday 15th February 2016

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Zao region of Yamagata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 367cm Posted on Monday 15th February 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Ah, it's good to see signs of winter returning after that strange and not very nice weekend. Fairly cold this morning with a moderate wind and a dusting of snow on the slopes I would imagine - just 1cm here at base - but it is still snowing. I would expect some board-rattling conditions this morning so we'd like a nice soft fluffy layer on top of that please. Sadly due to the weather attacking our lovely ice monsters and affecting their conditions, the night time light up evening service is not operating now... officially 'for the time being'. Will we see it back up and running? I suppose it will all depend on the weather and what snow we get from now. We are due light snow today and tomorrow with forecast heavier snow around Wednesday. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Zao region of Yamagata New snowfall at base 22cm Snowfall at base this season 390cm Posted on Wednesday 17th February 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . And a decent amount it is! 22cm of snow outside my place here this morning so that means that and more on the mountain for a very welcome decent refresh. There's some other good news this morning - the evening 'Light Up' Ropeway service is going to be re-starting from this evening - though the Ropeway folk are being clear up front that the ice monsters did take a hit over the weekend and are once again 'starting to grow' with this new snowfall. Basically, don't expect them to be perfect. Clearer skies due tomorrow with a return of the snow clouds at the weekend. All planned lifts are operating this morning. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Zao region of Yamagata New snowfall at base 8cm Snowfall at base this season 365cm Posted on Wednesday 10th February 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Good morning from a snowy Zao where it has been coming down at quite the rate at times this morning. There's 8cm of fresh to report and more coming down now. This snowfall is probably going to ease off today and over the next few days some sunshine is forecast. Warmth and rain is still a possibility for Saturday - here as in many places through Japan by the looks of things - so the weekend is not looking good unless the forecast changes. Fingers crossed for that. Next few days should be good though. All planned lifts are operating this morning. The Karamatsu pair lift does not operate on weekdays. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . As expected, it's going to be a beautiful day here in Zao today. Clear blue skies are the headline for the day, with just a dusting of snow since my last report. No wind and not too cold - but hopefully won't be getting too warm either even with the sun. There's likely going to be more sunshine tomorrow and a return to snowfall on Saturday, though it might get slightly too warm with a chance of some rain. Let's just hope we can avoid that. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Zao region of Yamagata New snowfall at base 6cm Snowfall at base this season 451cm Posted on Thursday 3rd March 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Good morning from Zao and snow is falling, with limited visibility up on the mountain this morning. At the start of the day anyway. There's been 6cm of fresh snow delivered down here at village base and it's coming down as I write. Today should be good - just be sure you know where you're going with the visibility like it is. After today it's going to really start warming up over the next few days, with the peak of the warmth being Sunday. Not only warm but probably rain too, so Sunday may not be the best day to be planning on being here. Tomorrow and Saturday (first half at least), lots of sunshine is on the forecasts at the moment. The Karamatsu pair lift is generally closed on weekdays. The evening light up ropeway service has now finished for the season. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Morning from Zao. It's cloud and blue sky at the moment over the village and mountain with just a little bit of fresh snow to report, hopefully maybe a few cm higher up. Not much potential for snow according to the weekly forecast at the moment though it should be keeping pretty cold at least for the next day or two; perhaps a little warmer come Sunday. Fingers crossed it doesn't start warming up too much like the other day! It won't be as busy as mid season tomorrow but expect there to be quite a lot of people coming out. Lots of 'time for that last ski' kind of discussions being heard... Zao of course usually opens in some parts through until Golden Week in early May. Just what the snow situation will be like even in early April will be interesting to see. Lots of cloud and a few hints of sun here and there this morning though we may see some more snow during the day today. As with what looks like most or all of Japan, it's going to be much warmer come the weekend - and perhaps way too warm for our liking. We'll just have to hope it doesn't warm up too much... Should keep cold today and tomorrow though and so snow conditions for the time being should remain good. The Karamatsu pair lift is generally closed on weekdays.
