Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 489cm Weather overview Turning foggy Wind Light Temperature - Visibility Fair Posted at 12:48pm on Wednesday 9th January 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A sunny morning but dark clouds over Myoko; slightly warmer weather and the barometer a bit down... could this mean some snow is on the way? We believe so and hope so! What I'm really hoping for is when the report says "moderate snow" because that's when meters of the stuff fall. Right now it's gray and getting foggier, maybe meaning the lowering freezing line that's supposed to happen through the day. The wind is starting to pick up from the north, too, so the weather is changing, whatever happens. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Ah, those dark clouds on the horizon yesterday did their job--we have some Myoko-style snow falling right now. A little lighter than it can get, but what it can get can also shut things down, so no complaints today! It's been picking up through the day, too, so we've got a nice layer of powder to enjoy. A special hello to some readers who I met recently, and who uncovered my secret Snow Japan identity--thanks for reading, and the nice comments! • Myoko Now: Sunday 13th January 2013

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 594m Weather overview Clear Wind Calm Temperature - Visibility Excellent Posted at 9:55am on Sunday 13th January 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . I come to you, humbly, apologetically.... OK, I missed yesterday's report--too many people to take care of, too much on his poor mind (oh, the life of a writer/skier). Anyway, it was a beautiful day yesterday, with the powder off piste slowly getting softer and heavier, but the gelende/piste/groomed runs very nice all day. Today is more bluebird, so it's going to be a better day for the piste than the hills (but it will be beautiful offpiste). We could use a good blast of fresh powder shortly, and looks like snow will be back i the coming days. People are really churning up the backcountry, which is fine (I guess--it's not a competition, kids; savor the mountains and set aside the testosterone), but these cycles of sun could going to result in some weak layers in the snowpack. Talk to the locals; don't go where you don't know. • Myoko Now: Tuesday 15th January 2013

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 40cm Snowfall at base this season 644m Weather overview Moderate to heavy snow Wind Varied Temperature - Visibility Fair but varied Posted at 6:20pm on Tuesday 15th January 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . I had to get out this morning to see the real snow conditions--because it was snowing good and hard--at Seki Onsen. An interesting place, and lots of fairly chewy, heavy powder. Pretty good wind through the day as well, which I think accounts for some of the weight; snow was packed in places. We knew it was coming last night because we had some serious thunder and lightning--the sign of heavy snowfall. It aslo usually menas that the fall will be graupel, or soft hail, and that was definitely the case. The flakes got lighter and fluffier during the day, so a good reset on the hills for tomorrow. Maybe a little sun tomorrow (go for it, bluebird fans), before going back to snow (and the more the better, says I). The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The snow is back today; about 10 cm so far, and it looks steady if not particularly Myoko-heavy yet. Good timing, too; we needed a reset on powder! Last day of a three-day weekend means it might be a bit crowded in the morning, but people usually start leaving mid-day or so. In the backcountry, as I mentioned earlier, the recent sun and warm weather could create some weak layers in the snow--keep an eye on the snowpack as you head out. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 20cm Snowfall at base this season 724m Weather overview Cloud, light snow Wind Light Temperature - Visibility Reduced Posted at 1:17pm on Saturday 19th January 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It's a mixed day in Myoko--the sun keeps poking out between patches of light snow. Can't decide what it wants to do. A little fresh snow overnight, so the trees were a nice white all the way up this morning. it's been pretty heavy fresh, though; yesterday the snow was deep, but steeps were needed to really enjoy it. Lots of downhill trail breaking on what usually is a mild slide down through the trees off from the ski areas. Break trail up; break trail down. The joy of (real) backcountry. • Myoko Now: Monday 21st January 2013

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 749m Weather overview Clear and sunny Wind Calm Temperature - Visibility Excellent Posted at 12:07pm on Monday 21st January 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . All is calm, all is clear and all is beautiful this morning in Myoko. Myoko is looking stunning this morning. It's a mild morning as well, but temperatures are set to drop later on (or am I just willing them to) and hopefully we can avoid rain tonight into tomorrow and it just turn on the snow again. It's not going to get super cold though by any stretch and the local forecasts are borderline, though surely higher up if anything is to fall it will be snow. Again, surely, hopefully. We shall see, and I shall report! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A lot of snow is falling today; not always particularly heavy (at least by Myoko standards) but it's falling all the time. There is some pretty good wind at times, too, especially high up in the mountains, but at the base at moments as well. It was supposed to be sunny today, but maybe the snow will just keep going for a while. The snow removal is a pain, but the skiing is good! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 15cm Snowfall at base this season 774m Weather overview Varied Wind Increasing Temperature - Visibility Fair Posted at 9:24am on Friday 25th January 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The snow did in fact start to fall last night and into the morning, although the sun is shining just as I write this. Maybe 10-15 cm so far—not enough to fire up the snowthrower just yet; we'll wait for more before doing a proper clean-up (the newspaper man didn't have to wade in to make the delivery, which is my main concern for the early morning; be kind to your neighbors, right?). The wind is starting to pick up form the north, and the forecast is for a pretty windy Saturday. I just heard that they cancelled the hydrofoil ferry to Sado, which usually means some strong wind and waves coming. So we're still waiting a bit, but the weather looks ready to give us a pretty good refill of fresh snow over the weekend. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 759m Weather overview Cloudy some sun Wind Calm Temperature - Visibility Fair Posted at 11:53am on Thursday 24th January 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It is sunny today - a clear, beautiful day, just a few fluffy clouds in the sky, and a light breeze from the southwest (it's always hard to tell here at the base at Akakan, because the winds pass around Mt. Myoko and the gap around Mt. Maeyama, and seem more southerly than they probably really are. On the top of Maeyama, you'lll often have winds blasting from one direction, then suddenly have them switch). But nice weather, of course, makes us look froward to the next blast of snow, which looks likely over the coming days. Suntan today; face shots in a few more days. A perfect combination. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . After a pretty good snowfall last night (got the wife worrying about snow removal, while the writer was off in Tokyo) but which didn't add too much snow to the base, it was a pretty gray day, but with good snow conditions. Maybe a little sun tomorrow, before the snow gets turned on toward the weekend. Doesn't look like the earlier rain did much in the way of reducing snow stability, but I'll be climbing in the next few days, and will give what backcountry information I can. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 851m Weather overview Cloudy, fog, light snow Wind Light to moderate Temperature - Visibility Good Posted at 9:45am on Wednesday 30th January 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It looked like it might be getting sunny early in the morning, but the light snow turned back on again, so hopefully there will be a little fresh powder out there (we could use a little reset in places). Looks like some very strange weather ahead, though; tomorrow should be sunny and a little warmer, and then the freezing level is going to start moving up almost to the peak of Mt. Myoko. Meaning we could have some rain (blechhhh) on Friday into Saturday. Then the temperature is predicted to drop very fast with snow returning. That could mean the formation of an ice layer which would then be loaded with snow, so it's a good time for anyone heading off the piste to keep an eye on things, go prepared, and be ready to not go if things get very sketchy. You just never know! Let's see what happens over the next few days.
