The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Yesterday I said how today is expected to be warmer still. And it definitely is. 5C on the thermometer outside right now and for the moment it's just cloudy. Rain is definitely on the cards though in lower areas at least. Wind this morning affecting the top Wonderland lift at Niseko Village with the Niseko Gondola also running at reduced speed. The top Hanazono lift is also running at a reduced speed but other than that we seem to be mostly open as planned this morning. If stronger winds whip up this afternoon though we can perhaps expect that situation to change. Hopefully we might get to see more snow falling on Wednesday. Avalanche Information Niseko base 6am: 0C, no new snow, cloudy. Moiwa 800m: not available. Annupuri peak: -4.1C, expected wind speed at noon: SW10m/s. Coastal data: wind SSE6m/s, 1.5m waves, pressure 1004hPa. Low pressure over Japan Sea, under 1000m wind is weak, no snow drift development. Temperatures will increase as the low pressure approaches, wet snow and wind are expected above 800m this afternoon. General avalanche risk is low. All peak gates are expected to open at 9.30am. Listen to the ski patrols warnings before going through the gates. From analysis of the snowfall, the danger of full depth avalanches on steep slopes and under cornices is rising and expected to start earlier than usual this year. Riding cornice slopes and valley bottoms is extremely dangerous. Everyone needs to use sound judgement and make careful route selection to avoid these danger zones. Gate 9 will be closed from today due to danger of flooding. Don't duck ropes. Be careful of a sudden change in weather. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Another Saturday morning. Just a dusting of snow in Hirafu this morning to report though I expect more wind driven snow to be found on the mountain. It is around -4 degrees at the moment and generally cloudy. Actually at the moment I am over in Hanazono and the sun is poking through the clouds here with good visibility though is seems much duller over on the other resort areas. In fact Niseko Annupuri were reporting snowfall as of 10 minutes ago. Unfortunately only the Jumbo Number 1 lift at Annupuri is operating at the moment due to wind conditions. At Niseko Village the Niseko Gondola and top Wonderland Chair lifts are not moving. Niseko Grand Hirafu has the top King Number 3 and King Number 4 lifts closed at the time of writing. All lifts are moving at Hanazono. In other resort news, today is the last day of 'nighta' operations which will be sad to see. While we are on the subject, let's remind ourselves of the planned season dates for each of the resort areas: Niseko Annupuri - until May 6th Niseko Village - until May 6th Niseko Grand Hirafu - until May 6th Niseko Hanazono Resort - until April 7th We are of course now into the 'Spring Ski' lift ticket price band, and from April 8th we'll be entering the cheaper 'Final Season' ticket prices. Avalanche Information Niseko base 6am: -5C, trace new snow. 800m elevation, trace new snow, wind driven snow and snow drift development. Annupuri peak: -13.8C, snow depth at 1000m: 400cm. Coastal data: wind WNW13m/s, 2.4m waves, pressure 1007hPa. Warm, wet low pressure snowfall has been followed by influx of cool air. Below 1000m this has resulted in a thin crust. Above 800m on cornice slopes and knolls, from 21-22 Mar layer, the risk of up to 40cm surface slab avalanche continues. Peak gates are expected to open provided peak lifts are running. Please follow ski patrols advice. Although there has been only a small amount of new snowdrift development it is weak and will fracture easily on steep slopes. No matter how much snow has fallen avalanches occur when the conditions are right. If there are people involved it becomes an accident. Be careful of yesterdays tracks in the trees, they will be hard and make control difficult. Also beware avalanches, cracks and trees. Caution is required. The risk of large scale avalanches from deep within the snowpack is rising. Avoid riding in the valley bottoms. Its not spring yet, have a good weekend. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Morning from Hirafu. It's a generally grey and cloudy one, very light snow falling overnight and given us a few more cm this morning and easing off now. Currently about -3 degrees here at base. A few lifts running slow aside, the resorts appear to be open as scheduled this morning. Noticeably quieter again this weekend. Late season is the time of year when you get to see more locals and people working in Niseko get out on the slopes as they get to have a bit of their own fun after looking after the peak season number of guests. The forecast for the coming week seems to be saying that temps will remain around the same level and it's a mix of cloud, snow and sunny spells. Perhaps a bit more warmth and rain around Thursday. Avalanche Information Niseko base 6am: -5C, 5cm new snow, calm. Annupuri peak: -12.1C, snow depth at 1000m: 400cm. Coastal data: wind WNW10m/s, 1.7m waves, pressure 1012hPa. The weather is calmer today. From data and observation, snow drift development above 20-21 Mar layer is stable. The general avalanche risk is low. All peak gates are expected to open at 10am. Be careful of cracks and holes hidden by new snow, listen to patrols advice before passing through gates. For you and your groups safety, carry and know how to use beacons and other rescue equipment. From this years snowfall data, the risk of full depth avalanche is rising in Osawa, Kozan no Sawa (Back Bowl), SW face of Nishi One (West Ridge), Mikaeri Bowl and Higashi One (East Ridge) cornice slope. Avoid riding in these areas, if you get caught in full depth avalanche it will be fatal. The snow is good today. Be cautious and aware, avoid having an accident. Have a safe day. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here No new to report from Niseko this morning. It has been a cloudy start to the day and it's nice and calm. Calm both in terms of weather and the number of people venturing out on the lifts. Thin clouds seem to be moving away leaving us with an increasing amount of blue sky over the region. Looks like it should be a fine day here. A cold morning so expect icy conditions early especially. Some lifts are now closed as the number of people on the slopes decreases: Niseko Annupuri - Jumbo Number 2 pair and Family pair Niseko Village - Morino Chair Niseko Grand Hirafu - Ace 1, King 1, King 2, Ace 4 Avalanche Information Niseko base 6am: -7C, no new snow, sunny. Annupuri peak: -12.5C. Coastal data: wind SSE3m/s, 0.5m waves, pressure 1010hPa. After a cold night the snow is hard but should start to soften up by about 10am. Peak gates are expected to open at 9.30am. Photos of full depth avalanches are posted in front of the gates. Please check, spring avalanches are large scale. They occur regularly in the Niseko area and there have been many near misses. A crack and full depth avalanche can occur simultaneously with no warning, and occur regardless of air temperature. They are difficult to predict, but can be avoided with care. Avalanches are a natural occurrence. If nobody is caught in one, it is not an accident. Avoid riding valley bottoms. Around 1000m, leeward slopes, deep snowdrifts below ridge lines and steep slopes where cracks have already occurred, are obvious places for spring avalanches. Avoid riding these areas. Accidents happen from overconfidence and cavalier attitude. The leader of the group takes on responsibility for everyone in the group. Have a safe day. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here An early report this morning before the lifts get going. It's a cloudy start to the day here. Temps dipped to just below freezing overnight and at the moment it is around 0 degrees here in the Hirafu base area. There's doesn't seem to be much of a wind this morning here so fingers crossed all of the lifts will be open as planned, though the report below is saying that there's stronger winds above 1000m and the forecast is telling us to expect windier conditions later on from around lunchtime. It's also saying that the clouds might clear up as the day progresses too... For all of those interested in the Kutchan town official snowfall numbers that we have been following... March 2013 is currently on 116cm. So easily beating last season when the number was 79cm, but not as good as the two seasons before when we got over 2m of snow in Kutchan. As I always mention, this is Kutchan, not the resorts - where there's considerably more as per reported here each day. When the new SnowJapan site goes online soon, there'll be some more interesting numbers to take in and compare... oh, what a tease I am. :) Avalanche Information Niseko base 6am: -1C, no new snow, cloudy. Peak Data: not available. Coastal data: wind WNW11m/s, 0.8m waves, pressure 1011hPa. Annupuri peak predicted windspeed at noon: W15m/s. A weak cold front moved through and snow surface is refrozen. Above 1000m there has been a strong westerly wind, however there has been no significant snow drift development. General avalanche risk is low. All peak gates are expected to open at 9.30am. On steep slopes around 900m, such as Mikaeri Bowl, many more cracks are opening and existing are widening, as tension is relieved in the slope. From now the risk of full depth avalanches, starting around 900m-1100m, is increasing. Steep open slopes with no trees show evidence of past avalanche activity. Do not ride these slopes as there is strong likelihood they will slide again with devastating consequences for anyone caught in their path. As the mountain turns to spring, the snow becomes more difficult to ride. Group leaders need to plan safe routes to avoid bad snow. Don't overestimate your skills or experience, have a safe day. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Hirafu and after a fine day yesterday, I have no new snowfall to report for you today. It's a mild morning here, about 6 degrees already, and there's a fair amount of cloud around and quite windy too. So just cloudy for the moment but there looks like a good chance we will have some rain falling later on in the day. Hopefully that will keep to a minimum. At the moment the forecast is telling us that there might be some snowfall early on next week, but I wouldn't hold out for anything significant. It is after all almost April! The top Wonderland lift at Niseko Village is not operating at the time of writing due to the wind conditions over there. Similarly the King Number 4, King Number 3 and Swinging Monkey lifts at Niseko Grand Hirafu and the top lift at Hanazono are stationary. Avalanche Information Niseko base 6am: 0C, no new snow, cloudy. Coastal data: wind S7m/s, 1.3m waves, pressure 1008hPa. Annupuri peak predicted windspeed at noon: SW20m/s. With the approach and passing of low pressure system a southerly wind will pick up and warm air flow into the area. Above 1000m the wind will be stronger and visibility will become poor. Gates 2 & 3 will be closed today. General avalanche risk is low. Risk of full depth avalanches around 1000m continues, avoid riding in their potential paths, like the valley bottoms. The snow in the trees is not good. The visibility is poor and it is hard to see the snow. Take care riding fast, hitting or falling into something. Beware cornices collapsing. As the snow melts snow bridges across creeks will begin to collapse. Take care crossing creeks, water temperature is very low. Please check information posted in front of gates and listen to patrols advice when passing through gates. Do not duck ropes. Do not enter off limits areas. Have a safe day. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here The sun has indeed made an appearance and it looks like it will be the starring role today. There's some white fluffy clouds hanging around the mountain but lots of blue sky this morning and totally clear views of Mt Yotei in the other direction. A very nice morning here and currently around 0 degrees. A moderate wind but lifts all seem to be scheduled to open as planned this morning. Tomorrow will be a little warmer and there's a chance of rain which will hopefully turn into snow by the end of the day. Avalanche Information Niseko base 6am: -3C, no new snow, calm. Moiwa, Annupuri Peak: no data. Coastal data: wind S3m/s, 0.9m waves, pressure 1020hPa. Annupuri peak predicted windspeed at noon: SW15m/s. Calm weather due to high pressure system. Above 1000m, small amount of snow drift development on top 25 Mar layer from weak system yesterday. From snowfall data, general avalanche risk is lowering, however there is risk on steep open bowls that collect snow, like Kozan no Sawa main chute, of rider stimulated, fast running surface avalanche. Peak gates are expected to open at 9.30am. Niseko Rules only exist to protect the freedom and minimum safety of out of bounds riding. Although the local community cares about your safety, the Ski Resorts responsibility and authority does not extend to out of bounds areas. Please understand and respect the rules. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Just when we thought those resort snow depth numbers were on their way down, we get some new snowfall and we're back up to 5m at Grand Hirafu. Yes, another 10+cm here in Hirafu this morning which is a nice start to the weekend. Decent snow too by the looks so it should be a good morning out there. No wind problems either this morning and resorts look to be open as planned. This morning for weather conditions Annupuri resort has 'snow', Niseko Village has 'cloud' and Niseko Grand Hirafu has 'fine'! From where I'm looking 'cloudy with snow falling' seems to be the best description. Perhaps those differing reports only goes to demonstrate how varied weather conditions can be in the same region. Avalanche Information Niseko base 6am: -3C, 10cm new snow, broken particles. Yesterday 4pm windspeed at 1000m: SW18m/s, 8pm: 14m/s. Coastal data 6am: wind NW12m/s, 1.3m waves, pressure 1016hPa. Annupuri peak predicted windspeed at noon: W18m/s. Snow depth at 1000m: 400cm. Cold air has been flowing into the area with wind and some snow. Above 800m, leeward slopes, snow drift development turning to slabs. These are weakly bonded and will easily collapse this morning. Avalanche risk is High this morning. Be careful on steep slopes and around knolls, shallow(20cm)rider stimulated surface slabs avalanches sliding on 29th Mar layer will easily occur. All peak gates are expected to open at 9.30. Listen to patrols advice before passing through gates. It is recommended to carry self rescue equipment. Avoid riding alone. Avoid getting caught by a deadly full depth avalanche, dont ride in valley bottoms. Cornices are large and will easily collapse, dont get too close. Be careful of cracks. Snow is heavy but good. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here [Originally posted earlier this morning - late appearance due to technical issues] Good morning from Niseko. It's a warm one this morning. Clearer earlier on but more cloudy now with some foggy conditions meaning poor visibility on some of the upper slopes today and that actually affecting some of the lifts including the top King Number 4 at Niseko Grand Hirafu, the top Hanazono lift and the Hirafu Spring Park as of 10:30am. It feels like it's going to warm up a fair bit more today and that's what the forecast is saying as well. A proper spring like feel to the air. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Yesterday winds ended up affecting some lift operations on the mountain again but it seems today the resorts are getting ready to be open as normal. Just a sprinkling of new snow, perhaps up to a few cm in places, but it's fairly wet. It's all a bit dull out there this morning actually with a fog on the mountain making visibility in places really poor. Just a slight wind at the moment at base. Perhaps a bit brighter tomorrow but along with it the chance of rainfall. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here We sure got a lot of rain over the weekend. Really heavy rain falling through into the middle of Sunday and I can't imagine it has done any favours for the snow conditions and hearing of some slides on the mountain as well. Wet sleet/snow was falling earlier on this morning and now a little later it snowing. Still wet though, but definitely colder than it has been. Strong winds are persisting today with basically most of the ski lifts closed at the resort areas that remain open for the season. Niseko Annupuri has been closed completely while just a few lower lifts at Grand Hirafu. All very limited. So from today it is just those two areas with Niseko Village taking a break until 27th April, when they will re-open for Golden Week, and Niseko Hanazono who have closed for the season. Tomorrow should be slightly warmer with a mix of cloud and the chance of light sleet/snow from time to time. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here [Originally posted earlier this morning - late appearance due to technical issues] Yesterday was a really warm day out there and temperatures didn't dip much overnight - warmest overnight I can remember this year - and this morning we have lovely blue skies over the Niseko region. No doubt it will be a rather mild day once again, though perhaps not as much as yesterday. No new snow of course and the snow that is out there will be I would expect rather moist and slushy this morning. Still, there's lots of it. A moderate wind blowing on the Annupuri area means that they have their Gondola and Jumbo Number 4 lifts on hold, though other resorts appear to be operating as planned. We are expecting more sunny weather conditions over the next few days and it will remain fairly warm with perhaps rain on Sunday. The days of fresh deliveries of snow over this season? We shall see... Just four more days of the season over on the Niseko Hanazono area.
