  • Myoko Now: Tuesday 5th March 2013

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 1308m Weather overview Partly sunny, sometimes light snow Wind Light Temperature - Visibility Good Posted at 10:37am on Tuesday 5th March 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Snow keeps trying to fall this morning, with big, fat flakes drifting down even as the sun peeks out from time to time. It could be snowing higher up in the mountains--hard to tell with the peaks again covered in cloud. It should be nice to have a little taste of winter (I mean soft, cold, fresh snow) before things go springlike later in the week. The forecast looks like things won't be s warm as was earlier noted, but rain has suddenly also appeared around Friday and Saturday. I have to confirm this, but I got word about a foreign skier who decided to go sidecountry, overshot the exit road and ended up in a valley to nowhere. The fire department and police got called in; apparently a successful rescue, but another example of the need to know before you go. Exploring is great; requiring a rescue is not. • Myoko Now: Sunday 3rd March 2013

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 15cm Snowfall at base this season 1308m Weather overview Light snow Wind Light to moderate Temperature - Visibility Varied Posted at 4:35pm on Sunday 3rd March 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . I had to get out early to climb today - a good chance to see what things were like after an evening of snowfall and some high winds down a bit lower than the ski areas. So late, but here we go! It was a pretty gray day, with lots of fog interspersed with enticing hits of sun and clear patches. Can't really talk about the groomed (maybe still a bit hard? or did the good snowfall soften things up a little?). Really nice up in the mountains, except 1) where the wind had blown patches down to ice or 2) the fog made it impossible to see if you were even moving on high open areas. Great out in the trees... Looks like a week of lots of sun, maybe a little snow, and perhaps some spring-like conditions later in the week as the freezing line once more heads straight up the mountain. • Myoko Now: Friday 1st March 2013

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 1283m Weather overview Increasing clouds Wind Strong Temperature - Visibility Great Posted at 11:58am on Friday 1st March 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Things aren't looking very wintery today; the wind has been howling all night and into the morning, it's warm and rain seems very likely. The snow is really getting chewed up the wind, particularly: the snow banks along the roads are still pretty tall, but they've been crumbling since yesterday. So it's a day to write off for skiing, perhaps, but the freezing line is going to be shooting down (from almost the peak of Mt. Myoko right now, to basically sea level tomorrow) and some fresh snow may be coming as well. Things could be a little touchy in the backcountry if the rain and sudden cold creates a hard layer with soft new snow on top--keep your eyes open over the weekend if you are heading out (or select the terrain carefully!). The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The sun's out in Myoko today, although the top of the peaks are covered in clouds. The sun makes it feel warmer than it really is--the temperatures are staying in the minus range, at least for today and tomorrow. Enjoy the cold (and some snow tomorrow, it seems), because April weather will be coming later in the week. Not excited about temps in the teens, to be honest.... The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The rain ended sometime during the night, with a nice dusting of fresh snow by the morning. It's probably going to be a bit hard on the slopes today -- but, hey, it's not raining! We're also seeing a bit of sun as well, interspersed with some light snow. • Myoko Now: Sunday 10th March 2013

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 1308m Weather overview Light snow Wind Moderate Temperature - Visibility Poor fog Posted at 11:12am on Sunday 10th March 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A little late logging in today, but I'm glad I did; things started warm, with even a little sun, before rain started falling, the wind shifted to the north, things got cold, and now we've got light snow falling. Just as your trusty Snow Japan forecast predicted, the freezing line has come way down the mountain way fast. This probably means some not-great conditions on the snow--especially out in the backcountry (think some nasty crust, unless it was actually snowing up higher. Not likely, though). Take the temperatures below as something for the record; things are a lot colder now! Updated: Just a quick lunchtime update: the wind has really come up in the last 30 minutes or so; lift closures are likely so check if you're planning to ski this afternoon (and dress more warmly than the early temperatures would indicate!) • Myoko Now: Thursday 7th March 2013

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 1308m Weather overview Sunny with high clouds Wind Moderate Temperature - Visibility Good Posted at 8:47am on Thursday 7th March 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A nice sunny morning today, but one with lots of signs of change ahead. High, thin clouds cover the sky, and the wind is warm - typical conditions before it (rain) arrives. Looks like it could start late this afternoon/evening, and continue through tomorrow. After that, things get very strange, as the freezing line moves way up past the peak of Myoko on Saturday night, then comes shooting down on Sunday with snow.... Could be some pretty strong winds up in the hills, so not an ideal time for backcountry travel. But there's still a good snowpack out there! Get out, support your local (or favorite) hill, which hopefully is located around the base of Mt. Myoko (bit of local boosterism; sorry, but it is beautiful out there today). Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 1308m Weather overview Clouds moving in this afternoon Wind Light Temperature - Visibility Good Posted at 2:41pm on Wednesday 6th March 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . We started out with a sunny, spring morning today, although the clouds are starting to move in and the wind is currently picking up. The temperatures are way up and will be staying that way until probably Sunday (although the Snow Japan forecast has some snow possible Friday/Saturday, even as the freezing line goes way up to 2800 meters--things are definitely changeable, let's say that much for sure!). Not much more to add, because I'm stuck at the desk, and I felt like a little spring skiing this morning.... If you can't have powder, then some soft spring snow might be the next best thing! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It's warm but sunny again this morning - the predicted rain fell during the night (yea!) but might again late in the day (boo!). Can't complain, really. It was a really fun day to be on the snow yesterday, despite some gluey sections on the slopes. Good for perfecting your balance. Especially telemark skiers, who really understand the flexible style and balance demand that freeheel skiing creates when the skis stop wanting to go forward. But I digress. Looks like mostly nice weather today and tomorrow, and then we might get back to some snow Sunday and next week as well. Spring today; winter will return! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 7cm Snowfall at base this season 1330m Weather overview Snow Wind Moderate to strong Temperature - Visibility Varied Posted at 10:45am on Thursday 14th March 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . I kind of feel like I'm repeating myself, as these cycles of warm, sunny, rainy, colder, snowing keep going on.... After some pretty heavy rain yesterday, we're back to snow again, with some occasionally strong winds from the north that could slow down some lift operations. Probably not a whole lot of new snow - maybe 5-10cm - but we are getting some mini-cornices forming outside the house, so the real ones are probably also getting bigger. Again (careful, backcountry adventurers, in the sunny days ahead). And (wait for it...) it will be sunny again from tomorrow! I would say another cycle, although this time it looks like the freezing line will be staying pretty high, meaning warmer temperatures over the weekend, sun for the next couple of days until (blech) it starts to rain again, perhaps even pretty heavy around Monday. Although, to be an optimist, you have to admit that a little rain can lubricate that sticky spring snow on the ski runs. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It's warm (and it was warm yesterday, too), and we're just waiting now for the rain to start falling. With the local weather reports giving an 80-90 percent chance, I think it's likely that things are going to be wet soon. With a strong west wind, we're also watching the snowpack get gobbled up. Spring is definitely here--for the moment. The freezing line continues its crazy up and down movement; it will be at about 3,000 meters midday, but will fall all the way to sea level by this evening, so we may be back to cold and snow after warm and rain. In the backcountry, keep an eye on the cornices--they're starting to fall with the warm weather, and they're big. We saw some serious slides and debris inside the caldera around Mt. Myoko yesterday; you don't want to be under them when they happen to come down. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . All the local reports aren't in yet, but I'm off to enjoy this perfectly bluebird day (yes, I've said I prefer a day of heavy snow - but it is March! What are you going to do?). Time for a climb, I think; there's probably some good snow on north faces. And with possible heavy rain on the schedule for tomorrow, too, it's time to act today. OK, with only two of the resorts having submitted reports, here's the word: current temperature is about -1°C at the base of Akakan; no fresh snow, the wind is light from the west.
