Today it's an absolutely perfect blue sky, very little wind--too bad we don't have a little more snowpack, because it would be a perfect day for skiing. • Myoko Now: Monday 10th December 2012

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 60cm Snowfall at base this season 179cm Weather overview Snow Wind Light Temperature - Visibility - Posted at 9:38am on Monday 10th December 2012 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Countdown to Opening: Snow Day Two Oh that snow is falling out there, with a total since yesterday of right around a meter. The ski areas probably could open (staffing seems to be the problem, not snow at this point). Can't really blame them, in a way, because they have been running pretty tight operations in recent years, with a lot of investment also going in, particularly at Akakan (check out all the nicely repainted lift towers and renovated lift machinery, if you're into big gears). You're reporter, of course, can't wait, so the Nordic skis are coming out today. Just too much snow and too much fun (but looks like a second snow-throw later in the day, just to keep the cars moving). Really good early-season snow; let's hope it keeps going through the new year! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 184cm Weather overview Partly cloudy, sometime showers Wind Moderate Temperature - Visibility - Posted at 9:35am on Saturday 15th December 2012 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . I'm glad I didn't report first thing in the morning as I would have had to write things like, "An inauspicious start to the season" (even though I'm totally not superstitious) because things are looking, well, OK. There is a little rain falling from time to time, but it's meant a series of spectacular rainbows right over the mountains. The wind was howling like mad during the night and in the early morning, but the Sky Cable gondola at Akakan is running just fine. And there's still plenty of snow on the ground, so all in all it's not a bad early first day of the season! If my new boots arrive, I might get out there, too (I'd prefer to ski cold powder, but I'm a gearhead, too....gotta try the new toys). Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 184cm Weather overview Fog and rain Wind Varied Temperature - Visibility - Posted at 9:46am on Sunday 16th December 2012 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . If the first day of skiing turned out to be much better than it seemed at first (if a bit warm through the day), today is a good day to...well, not not go skiing--we'd never say that--but to dress warmly. Or dryly. It's pretty grim out there, with thick fog and rain. Temperatures are marginally lower than yesterday, with the wind shifting around to the north. As the Snow Japan weather report shows, the freezing level is going to go up today and tomorrow, but then come back down. With the colder weather, snow is on the forecast too, so better snow days ahead. Today, support your local ski area by ordering a coffee or something. We haven't been hit by the huge snows that have fallen further northeast, but that's OK, too (no avalanches, no highway closures around here yet). Today we're seeing a nice, light snowfall--light in quantity (about 5cm overnight) and light in weight, too. Just a really pretty, snowy, pre-season day. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Just as that snow level is going down, we have some fresh falling in Myoko. As I've siad a few times, things are often pretty marginal until right around Christmas here, so things are still looking good. At the moment it's pretty sloppy, wet snow, with some fairly strong winds at times. Just enough to make the streets white at the moment, but we could see some accumulation by tomorrow if it keeps going at this pace.
