The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I may have had a number of months off my daily Niseko reporting duties, but I was thinking that I would have a bit more time to re-charge in this first part of November - but the weather is thinking differently. I'm not complaining. So, yesterday we ended up being rained on. And quite heavily at times too. Boo! But, this morning I have woken to another 4cm of snow on the ground here at base. Hurray! Strong winds as well at the moment. They should calm down as the day goes on and we might get to see some sunshine tomorrow, and a day or two of slightly warmer conditions. It's shaping up to be an interesting pre-season. --- We are now less than 3 weeks away from the first ski lifts opening in Niseko. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Hello everyone from here in Hirafu... and I'm actually quite excited this morning. Last night the snow started to fall once again and this morning there's 11cm of it outside my place with more snowy conditions forecast for the day today, with it easing off by early tomorrow morning. Without giving too much away, once the new SnowJapan updates go online it will be very easy for you to compare snowfall in recent seasons. Last season it looks like it was the later part of November before we got any proper numbers, so we are enjoying a positive start this season. Let's hope it continues that way. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Although we have had a taste of wintery weather on and off up until now it seems this time the real winter weather has arrived. Yesterday turned very cold and it started snowing midway through the day. The difference this time was that the ground temperatures have dropped and the snowfall settled on the road easily. By early evening there was an accumulation of 7cm in the village and reports of substantially more on the mountain itself. This morning the cold weather remains with us and a check of the thermometer reveals it is still a chilly 0c at 9am. The roads remain frozen from overnight and are very white and icy this morning. It continues to snow now and the forecast is for more snow throughout today, with a further 6cm expected and then on top of that a whopping 18cm predicted at mid mountain level throughout Saturday. The start to winter in Furano is looking very positive. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning everyone, and I have some more snow to report this morning - 3cm of it in fact, down here at base. Things were looking green and brown once again during the day yesterday, but the snow started falling last night and this morning we're back to white once again. I wonder how much there is higher up there on the mountains... More snowfall is forecast on and off over the next few days along with some cold temperatures but it looks like it should get a bit warmer early next week. --- We are now less than 3 weeks away from the first ski lifts opening in Niseko. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Well, it is that time of year where we are in the run up stage to the 2016-17 ski season. Wintery weather has definitely set in and house heating systems are cranked up to compensate for the fall in temperatures outside. First snowfalls have been early in Furano this year which is a really promising sign for a good winter. Over the past month there have been several dustings of snow to village level. None of these settled on the roads but there were some accumulations on lawns around town. The ski area has retained its whiteness for some time now. It is actually a really picturesque time of year with the golds, reds and browns of autumn mixed in with the fresh whiteness of winter. Sunday morning was the first snowfall that accumulated on the roads in the village and we awoke to find a very respectable 6 centimetres. Winter has started! Furano Ski Area has set a target opening date of 26 November 2016 subject to snow and weather conditions being suitable. This is actually just over 3 weeks out from today which is pretty exciting. It is time to go searching through the house for all the equipment and clothing I need for opening day. Today is cloudy with the weather drifting between light snow flurries and drizzle. Morning temperatures were siting right on 0c at 8am this morning in Kitanomine. From here on, any significant snow and weather events will be reported on Furano Now. Stay tuned... The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Lots of snow falling yesterday - as well as wind blowing - and this morning I have an additional 20cm of fresh to report from the Hirafu village area. At the time of writing, resorts aren't open as planned with strong winds especially over at Annupuri where upper area winds of up to 23m/s reported keeping all of the lifts there from operating. At Niseko Village just the bottom three lifts are moving. At Hirafu here the top Ace 3 and 4 lifts as well as the King 3 and 4 lifts are not moving due to strong winds, and the top two lifts at Hanazono are similarly affected. And here we were thinking we might catch a break with the wind this morning! If they can't get those opening up unfortunately it's inevitably going to create some congestion this morning. And there's lots of people around as well. The current snow is forecast to ease off during the day and leave us with just cloud. Should be cold overnight again but warm up tomorrow and we might see temperature rise to around 0 or possibly even slightly above. Hopefully there will be less wind. We should be getting back to the cold we expect though early in the week. --- OK as promised here's a quick look back at January and the numbers. And a good January it was of course. We logged (observed) 461cm of snowfall here at base in the month. The same observed number from the same spot in January last year (2013) was 443cm. Observed snowfall since the beginning of the season (2012-2013, last season): 979cm Observed snowfall since the beginning of the season (2013-2014, this season): 869cm Interesting. The main difference so far being more snowfall in December 2012 than December 2013. Both pretty amazing numbers, and of course we have over three months left of the season. Let's take a quick look at the JMA numbers recorded in Kutchan town... January 2013: 268cm January 2014: 317cm As always remember that the JMA numbers are from Kutchan town and our numbers are observed close to the base of Hirafu - so there's more falling on them there mountains. And also worth pointing out that this is not a science project, just presenting them to you because we find them to be interesting. JMA statistic for February last season (2013): 228cm SnowJapan Niseko Now statistic from February last season (2013): 406cm Long may the impressive snowfall numbers continue. (Oh yes... and light, dry and powdery please!) --- Niseko Avalanche Report Niseko base 6am: -7, 20cm new snow in last 12 hrs. Moiwa 800m: -12C, wind NW15m/s, poor visibility, blizzard conditions, highly unstable snowdrift and cornice development. Annupuri 1150m: -11C, wind W15-20m/s, major snowdrift development. Hirafu 1000m: -12C, 50cm snow drift growth. Annupuri peak 1308m: -16.4C, wind NW20.9m/s. Cape Benkei: NW16m/s, Cape Kamui: W12m/s, wave 2.7m, pressure 1017hPa. The cold air flow bringing us strong northwest wind (>15m/s) and snow continues both on the coast and mountains. From current observation and snowfall trends the avalanche risk in Niseko and surrounding mountains remains HIGH. The storm is expected to calm down this morning however open steep slopes and cornice slopes above 800m should be considered dangerous and avoided. Peak gates will be closed. Please respect and follow the patrols decisions. Do not duck ropes to enter Osawa, Kozen no sawa, Hanazono cornice area or Mizuno no sawa. Any avalanche will be large. The snow is good in the trees. Dont be overconfident or rely too much on your equipment. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . WE ARE OPEN! Yep, congratulations resort guys - they worked some magic with the machines and the bottom lift is now open for winter fun. Just a bit more of a sprinkling overnight but it is now falling steadily giving us great confidence going into the week that more lifts will open soon. Weather has changed a bit too now that snow is here and its gone from being bitter cold to quite nice out there. Maybe its just great feeling the snow on the face again. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here The clearer skies didn't last. They tend not to here in Niseko. Not only did the clouds move back in but they brought us another whopping amount of fresh snow overnight. How does 30-35cm sound? Sounds good to me. And that's here in the village, not on the mountain. Let's imagineing how much more fell up there! Whatever the number there's really only one thing that matters and that yet another lage delivery of light fresh Niseko powder has fallen since those sunny skies yesterday morning. I haven't done the numbers but we must surely be close to 9m of snowfall here now. Any guesses as to how much up top? In Monday's report, I mentioned that the JMA snow fall in Kutchan number for January so far was 159cm. This morning it stands at 194cm... and I'm not even sure if that takes into account this morning's new snow. Anyway, enough of numbers. What's with the weather? Well, it's snowing. For a change! -9C, so temperatures have been fairly consistent of late. Generally poor visibility out on the mountain this morning. And happily while there is a wind, it doesn't seem to be hindering people's enjoyment this morning as all resort lifts seem to be operating as planned. The only exception at the moment is a late start by the Swinging Monkey lift at Niseko Grand Hirafu. They might be digging it out from the snow. (Actually, officially it is late due to maintenance). More of the same on the forecast for tomorrow with snowfall perhaps easing off later in the day and Sunday. Simply fantastic conditions here at moment. Can you tell I'm excited? Time to get out on the snow I think... The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Lovely conditions yesterday on the mountain - great snow conditions, great weather and fine visibility. This all while on the news we were watching people in Tokyo coping with 10cm of snowfall. Obviously they are not quite as well equipped as we are up here, and so it looks like it was causing considerable problems. Anyway this morning we have a shockingly small amount of snow since yesterday in Niseko - less than in Tokyo! - with just a few cm to report. Winds are messing us about again this morning though with top lifts out of action. In yesterdays report I remember saying we were in for a few days of 'calm' conditions. Oops! Clearer skies, yes, but not calm with the wind today I'm afraid. The top lifts at Niseko Grand Hirafu (Ace Number 4 and King Number 3 & 4) are not moving. King Number 2 operating at reduced speed early on; the top lift at Hanazono is also not open. At Niseko Village the top Wonderland Chair is not operating and the Niseko Gondola is operating at reduced speeds. At Annupuri, the Gondola was not moving early on but has since started, but the top Jumbo Number 4 is still stationary. They are reporting winds of up to 21m/s up at the top of Annupuri there. Wind aside, looks set to be another fine day. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Right now a temperature of -7C outside. Earlier on it was snowing lightly but right now it has stopped and we are increasingly seeing clouds clear up and more blue sky appear. The sun is out and we look set to have a fine day here. Snowfall is never that far away though and we might get another sprinkling tonight, but generally we look set to enjoy a few days of calm conditions. Not much wind about means all the lifts are up and running and gates should be open. Let's take another look at snowfall numbers. So far, adding up the numbers on these reports we come to over 8m of snow fallen here in the Hirafu area since the beginning of the season. 800cm! For Kutchan town, the official JMA snowfall number for January 2013 stands at 159cm at the moment. Remember, for the whole of January 2012 the number was 290cm, and January 2011 it was an impressive 420cm. We'll keep you updated on that from time to time. It's cold, cold morning in Hirafu here with temperatures down to minus double digits. Not much of a wind and all lifts on the mountain resorts opened as planned. The sun is out and we have some nice clear blue skies above us. The forecast has clouds and possible snow later on today so it may well not last. For now at least it is a very good day to be out playing in the snow. All is good.
