Here is what the resorts are saying: Hakuba 47: 15cm Hakuba Goryu: 5-15cm Hakuba Happo-one: 30cm Hakuba Cortina: 6-15cm Again not a whole lot in base areas but a lot more as you go higher. This morning it is snowing on the mountains though not at base. There's a bit of a wind blowing at times I hear higher up, and there's a chance that it might affect lifts but the only thing I can notice so far is the Hakuba Iwatake gondola on standby due to wind. The forecast still looks excellent for the coming days and I hope to be reporting fresh every day into next week. Keep an eye on the forecasts especially if you are planning on visiting - and come prepared. Surely by the beginning of next week, I'll be able to just tell you that all of the resorts are fully open. It's my dream!! The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Hello from a snowy and very cold Shiga Kogen. (Sounds good, right?) I have measured another 11cm or so on the ground this morning. And it's quality stuff too. With more on the way. Yes, things are good at the moment and set to get better with that forecast showing a lot of snowfall over at least the next six days. The heaviest apparently is due over the weekend. As I write my report it is just snowing lightly with a moderate wind. And as I said at the beginning, it's really very cold this morning. Extra layers required. But those heading out should be rewarded with some great conditions. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here And it is an extremely cold one too. Feels like the coldest of the season to me for sure. -10 degrees my thermometer was saying. There is new snow out there, I measure just over 8cm, which is very nice though personally I wouldn't imagine it to be enough to properly cover that harder layer that we've been gliding on over the last few days. Perhaps there's much more higher up. Whatever, the next few days should see to that with decent snowfall still showing on the forecast. Snow is expected to continue falling throughout the day today and tomorrow. And hopefully beyond that. It is going to be windy too and we can expect lift disruption - at the start of the day the top lifts at Niseko Grand Hirafu, Niseko Village and Niseko Annupuri are on hold. Usually I'd be a bit put out by that, and I can certainly sympathise with the good folk visiting Niseko for their holidays just at this moment. But I think we would all agree with the real need of lots of fresh snow and a run of days of stormy conditions. Let's hope disruption is kept to a minimum. There's lots of people out early this morning eager to claim first tracks this morning. I'm going to join them soon. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6am: -11℃, 10cm new snow. Moiwa850m: -12℃, W15m/s, cornice and snowdrifts developing. Annupuri1150m: -19℃, W24m/s, 70cm snowdrifts. Hirafu1250m: -18℃, NW15m/s, snowdrifts developing. Kamui cape lighthouse: W13m/s, 1007hPa, 2.6m waves. The current strong wintery pressure system is bringing cold air and strong westerly wind. The gates’ opening is yet to be decided, please follow the ski patrol’s instructions. The snow below tree level has been reset and in good shape. The storm is forecasted to pick up and make the snowdrifts and cornices drastically grow. The avalanche risk is already high and will rise accordingly. Most avalanche accidents occur in leeward heavily snow-loaded slopes during strong storms. Today’s conditions are different from yesterday’s. Make conservative decisions today. A guided tour tried to walk over the net of the closed Gate 6 yesterday afternoon. Moiwa may not be within the Niseko United group, but is strictly conforming the Niseko Rules. Anyone disregarding the Rules will be refused to use the resort premises. The freedom to ride out of bounds and the guiding business relying on that can only be guaranteed by abiding the Rules. Better not make light of them. I measured 38cm very early this morning, and there's already another 3cm or so on the ground since then (early plowing today). The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Naeba everybody. So today's snow fall is a little difficult to pin down as to exactly how much has fallen in the last 24 hours. I have measured depths in various places around the base area and the most constant in areas sheltered from the wind is 20 cm. However in areas that have been strongly windswept the accumulation is much less. So therefore whilst 20cm has fallen it is not consistent across the whole mountain. Today's conditions will once again be fairly nice groomers with pockets of powder to be hunted down. Going on the weather is still predicting no end to the snow with Heavy Snowfall predicted as of Friday. Chilly! It feels good to be able to report a decent amount of snow this morning, although not a mega number, 7 cm at village level is significant and I would expect up to 15cm on the mountain. More important than today's 7cm though is the fact that there will be continuous snow for the next 6 days at least. Don't expect too much in the way of sun over the next 6 days as it is likely to be overcast each day. The weather is being nice today as well, being mostly cloudy, but some pretty big gaps in the clouds are letting good lighting through so there are no issues with visibility as I write this report now. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . While we were treated to some more wet conditions in the village, the upper slopes were getting more fresh snow and overnight up to 30cm of fresh snowfall is being reported by Happo-one, 20cm being reported by Hakuba Goryu and 15cm reported by Hakuba 47. Remember these are numbers that the ski resorts themselves are putting out there... I'm just reporting them on to you. Great to see those numbers though and it means conditions on upper areas of resorts should be good this morning. Less so on lower areas, many of which are still struggling which very meagre amounts of snow. This morning there is lots of cloud around jostling for position but there's some blue sky on show too and the sun showing through at times. Hopefully before long the snow clouds will take over and show some leadership! The forecasts are still totally promising lots of snow this week, through at least into early next week. Let's see it! More snow this morning - just over 10cm measured by myself - and though there's still a lot of snow on the forecast over the coming week, today is expected to clear up a bit before the snow returns later on before the end of the day. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Hello to you all, and this morning I have fresh snow to report. Hurray! But don't get too excited though just yet... 3cm. It's definitely a much colder start to the day which is a good thing and tomorrow should be colder still. The forecast still has a lot of snow lined up over the coming week too. The storm is due to begin sometime today. Let's see it happen! --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6am: -6℃, 5cm new snow. Moiwa850m: -8℃, W5m/s, 20cm snowdrifts from easterly winds, 10cm new snow. Annupuri 1150M: -11℃, W10m/s, 15cm new snow at 1000m. Hirafu1200m: -14℃, snowing and no snowdrift development. Kamui cape lighthouse: WSW10m/s, 1008hPa, 2.2m waves. The barometric pressure gradient is low and wind is stagnating below 10m/s westerly, however is forecasted to pick up and a storm will kick in above 1000m around noon. The snow in the forest around 800m elevation is mostly reset. A hoar layer (Jan 9th) is present under the present snowfall and could potentially become a trigger layer in the future snowpack. Beware of sluff laying on top of hard-pack steep slopes. Make sure to leash your board and double check your brakes on your fat-skis. Gates opening is yet to be decided, please respect the ski patrol’s decisions. Ducking ropes is severely restricted in Niseko. Do not duck ropes. --- Official resort snow depths as of Tuesday 10th January 2017: Niseko Grand Hirafu & Hanazono Top - 235cm Base - 85cm Niseko Village Top - 150cm Base - 100cm Niseko Annupuri Top - 155cm Base - 95cm --- Night skiing is planned until Monday 20th March 2017 at the Niseko Annupuri, Niseko Grand Hirafu and Niseko Village resort areas. There is no nighta in the Hanazono area. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Waiting for snow, then a bit of snow; these cycles are starting to get to me. We got some snow overnight - 16 cm at the base of Akakan - but we're still waiting for those endless days of non-stop snowing that is more, well, Myoko-y. This week looks like it could all turn around, though, so while today's light snow was welcome, it looks like a lot of fun ahead. Heavy snow, high winds... oh yeah (just be careful if it does start building up really fast with lots of wind, if you're in the backcountry). The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Naeba everybody. Yesterday's expected snow came yesterday afternoon and continued all night in fits and starts. It is still lightly snowing right now. This snow storm is not looking like it will pass quickly with snow predicted everyday going on and no end in sight. For today the piste conditions will be a mix of soft groomer and semi deep powder. Further great news - for the first time this season both every single lift and every single run are open. Spicy!
