Not much expected for today and possibly some sunshine tomorrow morning before the snow clouds return and there's a good chance of their being some wild stormy conditions into Thursday. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Morning from Nozawa. Ah, I'm glad it's today and not yesterday. Because rather than wet stuff, it's a story of fresh snow this morning. Yey! And there's a fair difference in amounts too with 45cm being reported on top Yamabiko areas since yesterday morning and just 10cm from Karasawa. My measured number is 24cm. So a nice new layer pretty much everywhere I would say; a good refresh. Light snow has still been falling early on but it's expected to stop soon with the forecast generally for cloudy weather today, but snow is forecast from tomorrow night too. From today, it looks like lifts will be open for an extra 30 minutes at the end of the day. More time to slide. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It's the last morning of the month and I am very pleased to be able to report 14cm of fresh snowfall on the ground here at base. And it's good quality stuff too by the looks. Nice. It is still snowing now, though expected to ease off this morning... before coming back later tomorrow. Wind doesn't look like it is going to be an issue today so I expect the lifts to be open as planned. In my report tomorrow I'll be looking back on January and the season so far. In the meantime... I'm off to Otaru for the day! ---- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6am: 20cm snowfall. Moiwa800m: -8.5℃, NE5m/s, 25cm snowfall. Annupuri1150m: -13℃, NW12m/s, 30-40cm, moderate development of snowdrifts. Hirafu1250m: -13℃, moderate NE wind, 20cm snowfall. Kamui cape lighthouse: NNW12m/s, 1014hPa, 2.5m waves. The winter weather pattern brought a good amount of snowfall, averaging 25cm at west areas of 800m elevation. Snowdrifts are developing, but in slow speed. Looking at the snowfall transition, and snow observations, the general avalanche risk is low, however 40cm surface slab avalanches from Jan 29th layer are to be expected in Higashi=one steep slopes where slabs have formed under the past north-easterly wind. Caution in needed in open steep, cornices and knoll terrains. Better not party-run, go one by one and ride the fall-line, not across it. The new snow is a bit shallow, but good. Beware of losing control. Do not stay at valley bottoms. Gates are scheduled to open. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The rain turned to snow at the end of the day yesterday, and then some serious snowfall. Lots of wind during the night and into the early morning, too, so we have a lot of big snow drifts (like my sealed-in front door earlier; made for some fun shoveling with the hardening rain-soaked stuff at the bottom of the pack). It's also pretty cold this morning, with the car thermometer (my reliable source when I can't hang one out) said -6° around 7 this morning. It could be a great day, with the sun likely to come out later. A little care should be taken by those heading into the backcountry; that wind (which has now died down) very likely loaded lee slopes. On top of the rain layer below, things could be a little dicey, so do be careful and maybe avoid the steepest slopes. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . The strong winds of Saturday died out overnight with only light winds in the village this morning. The grooming team had had enough time to groom all main runs but there was still great powder pockets to be found. The resort was late to open the Kitanomine Gondola, and finally that got operating around 9:30am. As the gondola didn't operate yesterday it gave access to some pretty amazing snow which of course couldn't be access yesterday. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . The forecasted snow did arrive yesterday and has delivered 22cm of new snow at village level. There was about an hour of rain at base late afternoon yesterday as temperatures were warm. We are back to winter temps this morning, and although the new snow is a bit heavy on the lower mountain it will be better the higher you go. It is currently snowing moderately so expect varied visibility. Take care. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Morning from Nozawa. It's colder this morning after a very mild day yesterday; and thankfully less windy too. I was actually in Nagano yesterday with my friend who does the Madarao Now reports, so we had a good natter and compared seasons and the ups and downs - a little concerned about news of warmth, strong winds and rain. Nozawa and Madarao are of course fairly close to each other but it doesn't mean that conditions are always the same. And of course their base is at a higher elevation than ours here... But anyhow it was good to see a dusting of snow on returning this morning, and the resort is reporting 5-8cm of snow on the upper slopes. It's mostly cloudy but some blue sky on show and the sun making brief appearances here and there. The forecast seems to indicate clearer weather. Tomorrow should be a little milder again with rain>snow currently forecast for Monday. A bit of a mixed picture for the coming few days then. Lots of people around this morning and visitors in Nozawa to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Hope everyone has a great weekend. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here First of all, Happy (Chinese) New Year! Here's to a good one for all. The lifts I mentioned in the report yesterday remained closed through the day, with a few others joining them including the Annupuri Gondola later in the day. The fairly nasty weather conditions continued too; the rain turned into snow but it was fairly wet. I noticed that the Free Ride Park at Grand Hirafu also closed mid-morning - due to poor visibility. So onto today. And the good news... is that the rain turned into snow and there's 11cm of it to report at my measuring point. However, with the day starting off with rain and mild conditions yesterday, it's perhaps not much of a surprise that the snow is heavy and wet. It is colder again this morning too which is good. Unfortunately, is still very windy indeed this morning. At the start of the day Annupuri is completely closed due to the conditions and top lifts at the other three resort areas not able to open. Today might well be another good day to sit out, relax in an onsen or do some other kind of activity. Having said that, the slopes that are open may be quiet! Tomorrow sunshine is forecast at least for part of the day and things should be much calmer. I suspect it will also be busy out there. Planning for early tracks recommended. ---- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6am: -11℃, 20cm snowfall. Moiwa800m: WNW12m/s, -9℃, 30cm snowfall, 60cm snowdrifts and 200cm snowpack depth. Annupuri1150m: -17℃, W25m/s. Hirafu1150m: -13℃, WSW20m/s, large development of snowdrifts. Kamui cape lighthouse: WSW20m/s, 1013hPa, 3.7m waves. Benkei cape lighthouse: NW23m/s. Isobars are tight, wind is strong and snowdrifts are drastically developing in all altitude. Observations and pressure test results show that 60cm thick surface slab avalanches are highly expected to occur in leeward cornices and knoll slopes above 800m elevation. Snowdrifts are heavy and dense and are extremely unstable and likely to collapse in large slabs. The avalanche risk is extreme. Peak gates will be closed for the sake of all users. A visitor in Moiwa tried to step out of bounds from closed gate 6 yesterday, got stopped by a ski patrol and started to rant at him. Apparently said something like "Childish Moiwa" - we are awe-stuck by how embarrassing, selfish and childish this person can be. We would like to remind that the Niseko community is trying the best to respect everyone’s (including this fool’s) freedom to ride, but at the same time trying the best to keep everyone (including this fool) safe. People who cannot cope with the Rules will be refused to use the resort premises, and the Rules apply to all nationalities and experience level. Please read the Niseko Rules carefully. The snow in the trees is a bit heavy but in good shape. --- Resort specific opening news at time of writing (subject to change during the day): Niseko Grand Hirafu The top Ace Number 3, King Number 3, Ace Number 4 and King Number 4 lifts are on hold at the start of the day. Niseko HANAZONO Resort The top Hanazono Number 3 lift is on hold at the start of the day. Niseko Village The Niseko Gondola and top Wonderland Chair lift are on hold at the start of the day. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It's better than we expected: a little snow on top of the stuff that looked like it could get a bit nasty and crunchy. Light rain yesterday afternoon helped bring down a lot of the heavy snow still stuck on roofs (not mine, unfortunately - watch your head when you come in!), but that also turned to light snow overnight. So all in all better than we thought might happen. The wind offshore is coming from the north-northwest again, a good sign of the forces bringing the next cycle of weather. We could see some rain Monday, it seems, but that also could very well turn into some heavy snow in the early part of next week. Just in time for a good reset of the snowpack! Watch the freezing line; a lot of times it's been lower than the initial forecast, meaning colder conditions than when that 0° line is way up the hill. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . ***Kitanomine Gondola closed*** ***Furano Downhill Romance 3 chair closed*** When I awoke this morning there was no sign of any snowfall happening, however in the last hour the forecasted snow has arrived and so far has accumulated to 2cm. A lot more is snow is expected from this afternoon and will continue through Saturday. The winds have also arrived and at base. They are moderate already and very strong further up the resort. The resort has advised the Kitanomine Gondola and Furano Downhill Romance #3 chair (that's the double at the top of the Furano Zone) will not operate due to wind. However there is still plenty of great terrain that can be skied off the operating lifts. Temperatures were -4c at the base of the resort earlier this morning, but at base it is now 0c. Rain is forecast at village level from this afternoon due to the warm temperatures, so I really hope they are wrong on that one and we do get snow. Well, it is a chilly start to the day however with a perfect bluebird day on the cards I imagine it will soon warm up to somewhere around 0 degrees celsius. Conditions out there are nicely groomed and soft all over the mountain! Take out your carving plank today as the snow could not be better for laying over some extreme carves! Please bear in mind that whilst we are reporting 10 cm of new snowfall today this is because of snow that fell during the day after our report was posted. As such whilst there is lots of fresh snow around it has all been nicely groomed. As such please don't come out today expecting to find snow that you need to snorkel in! Looking on the fine weather is supposed to hold out for today with a return to snow predicted for tomorrow. The rest of the week is predicted to be a mixture of clouds and light snow with potentially a little bit of rain thrown into the mix. Fruity!
