Whilst it is not quite a blue bird out there, there is plenty of blue skies to go around. We have received 8 cm of new snow since yesterday so there will be a little powder to go around. However, in general, the mountain is nice fresh groomers. Looking on we are expecting potentially a little snow today although this doesn't seem so likely right now. Then tomorrow we should have a nice clear day before we head back into snow on Friday. There is also a little rain forecast for Friday. Fingers crossed it turns into snow before it hits us! Salty! The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Today started off at -5c but the temperature has risen to +1c as can be evidenced by water from melt over the roads. Looking around at carparks and seeing the tarseal breaking through the slushy snow, you would think that spring had started. It has been snowing lightly today, but the day's accumulation hasn't amounted to more than 1cm. Good news looks like it is coming our way though with moderate snowfall tomorrow evening through to Friday morning. Lets hope this does actually happen and we can get back to nice powdery conditions. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Morning from Nozawa. There's lots of cloud around this morning and earlier light snow has eased off now. Light snow > cloud is what the forecasts as saying and that seems to be what is happening. They also point to a considerable warm up tomorrow but hopefully that won't last too long with colder conditions (and rain then snow) likely on Friday. It seems the Nagasaka Gondola is having some maintenance work done on it today and so is not moving at the start of the day. Unclear as to when that might be cleared, but check with the resort if you are out - or going out - today. Visibility is OK out there so early tracks should be good. The whole region looks like it will be experiencing some rather sudden warm conditions tomorrow which isn't great but it shouldn't be lasting for too long with a return to snowfall due on Friday. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here A bit of blue sky in the afternoon yesterday and a bit of snow to report this morning - 2cm. Yey! There will again of course likely a bit more than that at higher elevations. Light snow is still falling now but it is not expected to continue for long and something of a clear-up is likely later on today. We're looking at the prospect of some rather warm conditions tomorrow - into positive numbers - but you really (really) want the good news, don't you? ;) Yes, from Friday we can expect the temps to drop again... and for snow to start snowing. Fingers crossed it'll be proper decent snow that will continue for at least a few days and into next week. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Mountain base 6am : -5°, light winds, 3cm new snow. Moiwa 800m: -7°, minor snowdrift development from westerly wind, 5cm new snow. Annupuri 1150m, -9°, W9m/s, 5cm new snow, snowpack 170cm. Hirafu 1250m, -10°, W5m/s, 3cm new snow. Coastal data: Kamui Cape:WSW8m/s, 1020hPa, wave 0.8m. At 5am observation light winds above 800m and little noticeable snowdrift development. The mountain is covered in a thin blanket of fresh snow and the overall avalanche risk is low. Around elevation 1000m, East ridge, Back bowl sidewall, 30 degree slopes, there is possibility of snow drifts fracturing on 14 Feb layer. From the snowfall transition and impact test the lower snowpack is stable however take care around knolls and under cornices. Always remember there is never 100% safety in the mountains and make appropriate preparations before going out of bounds. All gates are expected to open. It almost looks like it could be sunny and clear up high: nothing like a little unkai (the sea of clouds) for those climbing up high. Don't forget, you can see Mt. Fuji if you get a little ways up on Ikenotaira or Suginohara.... Looking at my rather passionate posting yesterday, I didn't want to single out our Antipodean friends too much, but I often hear from Australian instructors that they worry about their countrymen because the concept of snow is so different, At the same time, all the major rescues - and fatalities - in the area over the years have been Japanese. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Naeba everybody. Today looks like it is going to be a reasonable day weather wise. It is currently snowing but not too heavily, and whilst visibility isn't perfect it certainly isn't terrible either. There is a little powder around from yesterday although only 4 cm fell during the night so don't expect any bottomless today. Looking on, the weather forecast is currently predicting snow up until Thursday, with Thursday itself being a clear day. Hopefully some nice groomed skiing available that day. More in places than others and we're not expecting anything major today, but it just seems to enjoy snowing over Shiga Kogen this season. And we like it too! The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Hirafu. And what do we have to report this morning? Another similar kind of story really this morning. Cloudy skies and very light snow has been falling, and there's just slightly over 1cm of fresh snow on the ground. All resort areas are opening as planned. What else is there? That's about it really. We're still looking towards the end of the week for the next decent snowfall. I hope you have a good day wherever you may be. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Mountain base : -4°, 5cm new snow. Moiwa 800m: -5°, NW5m/s, 5cm new snow, minor snowdrift development. Annupuri 1150m, -10°, light winds, trace new snow. Hirafu 1250m, -10°, light winds, trace new snow. Coastal data: Kamui Cape:ENE2m/s, 1020hPa, wave 1.8m. There is no significant snowdrift development and general avalanche risk is low. All gates are expected to be open. Please listen to the patrols advice before going out of bounds. The frost layer formed due the warm air yesterday will become a notable layer in future snowpack. Avalanches can happen easily on slopes subject to strong winds where rapid snowdrift growth occurs. Don't rely on this avalanche report for all your decision making, slopes need to be assessed individually to make the appropriate judgments. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It's a beautiful day out there in Myoko today. Opposite to the usual, it's sunny in the Myoko area, with clouds and what appears to be snowfall to the east and north of here. The kind of day that makes lots of people want to get out and enjoy the powder.... Which brings me to what might be a long posting. The Myoko search and rescue team had to go out again very late in the afternoon - into night, actually. A snowboarder going off the back of the area ended up in the wrong place. Very wrong, like near a river, and unable to climb back up. No gear. Alone. Clothing for a resort, not survival overnight. Luckily, she was found, brought out, uninjured, with all her fingers intact. It so easily could not have been the case. We have been so concerned in seeing average people - instructors with students, all kinds of people - out in places where, let me put this bluntly, THEY SHOULD NOT BE. When you ski off a groomed run, you are in the backcountry. The same dangers people face high up in the hills are right there just off the runs. The problem is, the typical side/slackcountry skier doesn't have beacon, probe and shovel; doesn't have a map; doesn't have spare gear and clothing good enough to keep them warm overnight; doesn't have water; doesn't have any particular plan. And that puts rescuers into danger as well. Again, I'll be blunt; our friends from Australia don't think about avalanches or sluffs or cracks or snow you can drown in because these things don't exist down under. These are everyday things here. They're not alone in being out there unprepared, but they are the majority. If I hear one more person say, "I know this slope. It's safe," in almost the same area where a guy was killed by a soft snow avalanche two years ago, I might have to give up my Zen-like, hermit existence as the old man on the hill and engage in some creative head bashing. Ski people tend to be affluent, educated, not stupid. Powder too often brings out their ignorance, though. I'm sure the person yesterday is a very nice person, just out for fun, and I don't blame her for that. You read SnowJapan; you care about the quality of the snow and the places to ski. You think about your sliding. Help get out the word that it's great to go out there, and that while there are still risks, you must have the basic preparations in place first: gear, knowledge, experience, partners and a plan.
