The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. Fresh snow and 15-20cm of it being reported by the report base to top; I'm measuring 14cm. So a nice new fresh blanket covering the mountain to play in and lots of people around early on eager to get up there and mess it all up! It looks like snow is continuing to fall higher up but down here at base level there's breaks in the cloud and the sun is trying to appear. The snow clouds are expected to retreat and leave us with cloud or perhaps even clear up as the day goes on. Tomorrow will likely be a bit warmer than today and snow is due again. Though during the daytime at lower levels and in the village there seems to be a decent chance of rain (before it turns into snow). Noooo----, don't do it! For now though, it should be a good morning out there. Hello from Madarao. 9cm of fresh snowfall overnight measured just before by myself, and at the moment it is cloudy but rather bright and I can actually see some blue sky over in some directions now - perhaps it is going to clear up today and we'll get some sunshine. It should be back to snow again tomorrow though during the day some rather mild conditions are forecast so we'll have to keep an eye on that. Keep cold please! The latest Niseko Now report can be found here A very good morning to you from Niseko. This is a bit more like it. There's a decent 16cm of fresh snow on the ground this morning here at base; with most of that coming overnight. What's more, there's not much wind this morning and all areas should be open. Snow forecast for the next few days, on-and-off at times and heavier at times, so fingers crossed the cm will keep on piling up. More and more please, come on let's keep it going. I think it's time to ski and check out this fresh snow... --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Mountain base: -10°, 25cm new snow. Moiwa 800m: -12°, W10m/s, 30cm new snow, 60cm snowdrift development. Annupuri 1150m, -15°, W12m/s, 40cm new snow. Hirafu 1250m, -16°, W10m/s, 30cm new snow. Coastal data: Kamui Cape:NW8m/s, 1010hPa, wave 2.1m. Wind is starting to drop and under 1000m elevation 30-40cm has fallen. The snowdrifts are continuing to stabilize however cornices are still fracturing easily. From snowfall transition and observation, Back Bowl around 1200m, Osawa cornice face 1100m and East Ridge cornice slope there is the possibility of large scale surface slab avalanche from the 17 Feb layer. Snowdrifts are still stabilizing- avoid riding open steep slopes and cornice slopes. The snow is good in the forests. Do not wait in valley bottoms, this is an avalanche path and you may be caught in one. All peak gates are expected to open but at delayed time. Do not duck ropes to get out of bounds. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Naeba everybody. First up let's recap from yesterday. It was meant to rain in the morning yesterday and begin to snow in the afternoon. As it actually happened we had a clear morning with rain in the afternoon although this turned to snow only after an hour or so. For today it looks as though we are in for a cold one today. The overcast weather combined with moderate winds on the mountain means that temperatures should remain below freezing the whole day. It did snow a little earlier on however not too much accumulated. Conditions on piste will be a little over firm with patches of ice being a fairly common feature. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . It has been an epic day in Furano with 15cm of new snow at village level and 40cm at the top of the resort...wow 40cm. Needless to say there was amazing powder skiing through the day with plenty of whoo hoo's being heard as people got their powder fill. While there were moderate and sometimes strong winds blowing, the Kitanomine Gondola managed to keep going. It didn't last long though happily and this morning it is back to being much colder and there's a few cm of fresh snow again this morning... enough to make the trees look slightly frosted. Generally cloudy skies this morning with snow likely later on and overnight tonight. In fact, the forecast is looking quite promising once again with regular snowfall lined up in the coming days. Yes, back to winter conditions sounds good to me. It will be interesting to see how snow conditions are this morning but if we get the snow tonight tomorrow will surely be the better of the weekend days. Have a good one. Unfortunately, we did get that rain yesterday. :( Happily, it turned into snow later on and the resort is this morning reporting 5cm of fresh. Not sure that will be enough for a reset but certainly better than wet. This morning light snow was falling a bit earlier but that has stopped now. There's a lot of cloud around but also a few bits of blue sky. It is also colder than yesterday so hopefully we're getting back to more mid-winter conditions again. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Things are much improved this morning. There's not as much fresh snowfall as we would like, but still a good 8+cm of on the ground here at base (more up top of course) and it is much, much colder. In fact it really is cold this morning, not just 'colder'. Resorts are reporting temperatures as cold as -18C at the top! Those extra layers will be needed today. So conditions should be improved this morning, and with snow on the forecast for today and indeed over the next few days so they should be continuing to improve. There's a lot of people here out enjoy that snow though, so we need decent snowfall under normal circumstances to top-up things. So we're still looking to that big snow to come for a good old proper reset. Top lifts affected by wind at the start of the day - see below for more on 8:30am status. Yesterday I got caught up with a few things and wasn't able to prepare my answers. I'll try to get them done over the weekend and post them in the report on Monday. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Mountain base: -11°, 10cm new snow, snowdrift development. Moiwa 800m: -9°, NW18m/s, 20cm new snow, snowdrift development. Annupuri 1150m, -19°, W20m/s, snowdrift development. Hirafu 1250m, -18°, 20cm new snow, snowdrift development. Coastal data: Kamui Cape:W14m/s, 1010hPa, wave 3.3m, Benkei Cape: NW20m/s. Cold air is flowing into the area, isobars are close together and snow drifts are developing rapidly with the strong NW wind. Above 800m upper Mikaeri Bowl, 1000m Osawa cornice slope, most places in Backbowl and East ridge cornice slope, the avalanche risk is high. Gates 1, 2, 3, 4 will be closed. Gates 5, 6, 8 are yet to be decided. Please respect the patrols decisions and follow their advice. There is frost layer from the 17th Feb under the new snowdrifts. Yesterday this layer was just wet snow but it is expected to be the fracture layer on surface slabs today. Snow conditions are different to from yesterday, SE steep slopes will fracture easily and some slopes are very dangerous. Most accidents occur right after storms. If conditions are right avalanches will always occur no matter how much snow there is. Don't be overconfident and make cautious decisions without overestimating the safety of conditions at the moment. The snow in the forest is good. --- Resort specific opening news at time of writing (subject to change during the day): Niseko Grand Hirafu The top Ace Number 4 and King Number 4 lifts are on hold at the start of the day. Niseko HANAZONO Resort All three lifts appear to be planning to operate as normal. Niseko Village The top Wonderland Chair lift is on hold at the start of the day. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It is trying very hard to snow today, after a day of pounding rain and wind. The Niigata prefectural prediction (which is pretty good) was for 15cm; maybe we got half that. It's snowing now, but the forecast to 4pm is just two more centimeters. If you're skiing, it's a day to stay on the slopes, I think, as it could be pretty nasty out in the woods (all that wet snow, cooling down, a dusting of snow on top....). Probably ice on the groomed as well. I just hope the heavy snow that some forecasts see for today does come true. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Yesterday it was something of a surprise to see the snow continuing to fall, wasn't quite expecting that and the clear up didn't really happen. I even have 4cm of snow to report (that's what is on my report today), though there is no further fresh snow to report overnight. I am hearing that there was around 10cm of snow and more further up on the mountain which is something of a relief... didn't get up there myself yesterday. This morning we have overcast conditions and like what seems like lots of Japan it is going to get mild. Borderline warm, depending on how you look at it. The forecast is looking quite promising for us to start getting snowed on properly from perhaps overnight tonight or tomorrow morning. Steady and regular snowfall is there on the forecast well into next week, so fingers crossed this turns out to be a decent delivery. We need a complete and impressive reset. It feels fairly calm early this morning but stronger winds are due to be blowing around later and might affect lifts. Resorts look set to be opening as normal at the start of the day though. Have fun and stay safe. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Mountain base: -5°, no new snow. Moiwa 800m: -6°, no new snow. Annupuri 1150m, -6°, SSW5-10m/s, poor visibility, no new snow. Hirafu 1250m, -7°, S10m/s, poor visibility, no new snow. Coastal data: Kamui Cape:SSW18m/s, 1014hPa, wave 1.6m. The temperature is rising and a southerly wind is picking up as a low pressure system approaches. From observation the general avalanche risk is low but it will rise as the temperature increases today. The 15 Feb snowfall is not bonded well and will easily form loose avalanches 10-15cm thickness on steep slopes. There is a high possibility that this layer will become a weak layer in the future snowpack. Many accidents occur in bad weather. With strong winds and heavy snowfall, snowdrifts on previously safe slopes can develop rapidly into having unstable avalanche prone conditions. Best not to venture too far today. All gates are expected to be open but please listen to the patrols advice. The inbounds snow is OK today. Go for a few runs this morning then hit the onsen before the bad weather hits this afternoon. Don't duck ropes, today is not the day to try and sneak out of bounds. --- Official resort snow depths as of Thursday 16th February 2017: Niseko Grand Hirafu & Hanazono Top - 295cm Base - 120cm Niseko Village Top - 280cm Base - 140cm Niseko Annupuri Top - 315cm Base - 140cm --- Night skiing is planned until Monday 20th March 2017 at the Niseko Annupuri, Niseko Grand Hirafu and Niseko Village resort areas. There is no nighta in the Hanazono area.
