  • Myoko Now: Friday 17th March 2017

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 4cm Snowfall at base this season 1440cm Posted on Friday 17th March 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Very light snow is falling, and the sun is intermittently shining. Nice way to end the work week (wait a minute, isn't every day a weekend in Myoko?). It looks like snow could be falling a little more heavily high up, while there's still a lot of blue sky showing all around the peaks. A couple of things end this weekend at Suginohara: Myoko Snowmobile Land, which is a number of trails around the base of the mountain, closes on the 20th, which I have heard (and will need to confirm; can't find it on the website but a friend did) that the Suginohara No. 3 lift will also close on the 20th. Tiny rant: I can't understand why ski areas close the high lifts early! The snow will hang on longer up there, and there's more interesting terrain up top. It also limits access to the backcountry (or, makes for a much longer hike up to the peaks), which I sometimes wonder could be the real reason. I know some areas are more active than others in discouraging backcountry access, which always seems counterproductive. Real backcountry skiers/boarders aren't the ones getting lost; people going off the lifts are. OK, rant over. Smile, get out there, enjoy a nice day on the hill! Hearing that there's some pretty nice conditions out there too on higher elevations. I need to head up there this morning for a first-hand check. Clearer skies are forecast for the weekend and there's not much in terms of snow potential over the coming week. Perhaps we might get a surprise or two. Long weekend ahead as Monday is a holiday. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Shiga Kogen. Great news! Yes, 12cm of fresh snow on the ground and the official report is saying 15cm. Both sound good to me. When we get to this stage of the season, the middle of March, you always start to wonder if this snow will be the last snow of the season. I was actually a bit surprised to see that we got 90cm during March last year (50cm this year so far) and some snowfall in April too - last season the last snow I reported was on 12th April, so there you go. I certainly hope so. Here's to more snowfall! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . That nice weather yesterday did indeed turn to snow later in the day. Just as the Niigata Prefecture forecast called it, we got about 15cm of pretty wet snow, but nice all the same. Looks like snow showers will continue through the week, too, I would guess thanks to the big low pressure cells sitting off the Pacific side of Japan. It's brightening just a little to the south at the moment; maybe a little break before we get some more snow? The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Morning everyone. I was a bit shocked - in a good way - to see the resort reporting up to 25cm of fresh snow this morning on the top area of the mountain... not quite as much as that down here at base, but still a fresh blanket of snow which is great to see. It was snowing just before but has stopped now and there's a few breaks appearing in the clouds. Still, snow is there on the forecast so perhaps changeable conditions for the day today. I'm off up to Yamabiko! Looks like visibility is limited up there still but I can't resist that fresh snow. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . A bit more snow to report this morning - from varying amounts in base areas (none to few cm) in base areas, and up to 10cm being reported by Hakuba Cortina. Lots of cloud/fog covering lots of the ski slopes this morning and generally a lot of cloud around, though a few patches of blue sky to be seen from village areas - and the sun looks like it's trying to break through too. Actually forecasts seem to point towards a clear-up today. Just a bit of light snowfall is scattered around the forecast for the coming week, but there's more sun on that forecast than winter-like conditions. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . I'm happy to say that the forecasts were right. I am measuring just over 20cm of fresh snow here at base, so there's surely that and upwards at higher elevations. A very nice new layer of fresh snow and even though it's heavier than peak season dry snow, it should really liven things up for mid March.
