The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Naeba! "Storm Finn" has most certainly moved on from Mikuni valley, however the next bout of snow has already arrived! After a sunny afternoon yesterday, the clouds rolled in again overnight, starting off with just 1cm of snow before 8am. It's still snowing lightly but consistently, so we should expect some additional new snow accumulation today. The air temperature is predicted to be a little below 0°C, and with the light winds expected to drop off this afternoon there will be little effect of the wind on what the temperature feels like. Looking forwards, tomorrow is looking to be a chilly start, with daytime air temperatures expecting to max out at about -5°C. Light snow will continue to fall until Wednesday morning, when the skies will clear and gift us another sunny day to break up the winter storms. Later in the week, we should expect a mix of snow and cloud, however there are no significant snow accumulations predicted as it stands. In addition to this, there is nothing of note regarding the wind until at least Saturday. Air temperatures are expected to remain closer to 0°C than recently, which will feel warm compared to what we have experienced this last week. Kūru! The latest Furano Now report can be found here . It feels really cold with temperatures into the double negatives and a slight breeze. Around 7am winds were blowing strongly but dropped off very soon after. There has been 10cm of new snow overnight but it is wind affected and quite firm. On slope is a good mix of groomed skiing and powder runs that have been left alone. All in all it is a good day... just a bit chilly. Kitanomine Zone open. Furano Zone open. Earlier snow easing off - it is not snowing now as I look outside my place. Still, light snow is forecast occasionally during the day today and perhaps tomorrow too. Wednesday is currently looking like it might bring some clearer skies for mid-week skiers and boarders. Keeping cold so hopefully conditions should remain good. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Happy Monday morning to you all. It's the start of another week and we are of course not in the very last bit of January 2018. Including the 15cm I am adding today, my observed snowfall haul for January here at base so far is 234cm. With a few more reports to go, what will that number get to? O-tanoshi-mi-ni! I plan to post my monthly review by the end of the week. OK, so there's another decent layer of snow; it's still snowing nicely as I write this report and it is another very cold morning. Visibility is looking rather limited out there on the mountain at the moment but I expect conditions will be worth being checked out. We are now in peak season. And with that, of course, we expect peak conditions. The month of February is also 'peak', and includes the popular Chinese New Year holidays around the middle of the month. With so many people around over the next few weeks we are going to be needing that regular refresh of snow, so let's hope Nature delivers. As the report goes up at 8:30am, the top lifts appear to be opening as scheduled this morning. Hurray! --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 5.00am: -10°, 15cm new snow, light winds. Moiwa 800m: -10.6°, W4m/s (at 10pm last night N0.7m/s, 11.00pm:W15.6m/s), major snowdrift development. Annupuri 1150m: -17°, NW10m/s, 30cm new snow, snowdrift development. Hirafu 1250m: -18°, NW10m/s, 20cm new snow. Coastal data: Benkei Cape:NW14m/s. Kamui Cape: WSW9m/s, 1016hPa, wave 1.5m. Low pressure snowfall preceded the passing of low pressure system last night followed by a strong westerly wind which caused rapid snow drift development. From tests snow drift growth on leeward slopes above 800m is more than 100cm and unstable. There is possibility of powder avalanche fracturing about 60cm on 28th Jan or deeper layer at Kozan no sawa side wall and lower West ridge around 1100m, Osawa cornice slope at 900m and Higashi One cornice slope 1000m. This current weather pattern creates heavy slabs which fail instantaneously and travel at high speeds. The avalanche risk on leeward slopes effected by wind is high. There is 20-30cm of good snow in the trees. All gates are expected to be open. Please listen to the patrols advice before going out the gates. Cornices collapse down the slope, don't ride carelessly near them or rest under them to get out of the wind. Have a safe day. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . Good morning! It's a very different morning in Naeba today than it has been for the past few days. There are significant patches of blue sky, with some low, fluffy clouds clinging to the valley sides and peaks. The air temperature is still chilly, reading -7°C but without much wind it will feel pleasant compared to the last couple of days. Another 10cm of new snow in the past 24 hours will keep the pistes fresh as well. The sun will likely win out as the morning pushes on, so it will likely be a fantastic day to explore everything that Mt Naeba has to offer after the prolonged "Storm Finn". With the Dragondola open for the first time in a number of days. Looking forwards, we should expect clearer conditions for the remainder of today, with another squall of snow and cloud blowing in early tomorrow morning. This should stick around and gift us a little new snow through until Wednesday, when we should expect another break in the cloud for a day. Temperatures are expected to remain just below 0°C during daylight hours until at least Wednesday, meaning the snow should stay fresh on the pistes. Later in the week, it appears that our next significant storm system may blow into Mikuni valley on Friday, but we will need to wait and see what materialises over the next couple of days. Akarui! If you wondered why the Kitanomine lights were on all night it was because they were having an all night skiing event until 5am this morning which is part of the ski festival running this weekend in Kitanomine. There will be lots of fun events today and it attracts lots of local kids. Be sure to check it out. It is a very still morning here in the Kitanomine resort area. There is snow falling from the sky but it is very very light and overnight it has accumulated to a 2cm dusting. There will be a bit more that that on the slopes but nothing major. The good news is this evening the resort is forecast to receive a moderate dump of new snow. There is still plenty of nice light powder all over the resort from yesterday - enjoy! The latest Niseko Now report can be found here How are you doing on this Sunday morning? This morning I have 14cm of fresh snowfall to add to the reports so another fairly nice layer of good quality snow. It is snowing as this report goes up and the forecast is looking good over the coming week for regular resets. Sounds good. There's a bit more wind around than yesterday, and it seems some lifts are affected at the start of the day - see below for info at 8:30am. Doh. I think that's about all I have for you today. Have a good one! Oh yes, today was the last scheduled 'early morning' gondola service at Hirafu; so there's just one more weekend (next week) of early operations over at Niseko Village. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 5.00am: -7°, 10cm new snow, calm. Moiwa 800m: -8°, W12.1m/s, 15cm new snow, cornice, snowdrift and ridge line skovla development. Annupuri 1150m: -16°, W10m/s, 20cm new snow, cornice and snowdrift development. Hirafu 1250m: -13°, W10m/s, 20cm new snow, cornice and snowdrift development. Coastal data: Benkei Cape:NW14m/s. Kamui Cape: SW12m/s, 1012hPa, wave 1.9m. The winter weather pattern remains unchanged with snow and a westerly wind under 15m/s continuing, cornice and snowdrifts are growing even more. Wind crust has formed on ridgelines above 800m. Around 1100m Kozan no Sawa sidewall, Osawa cornice face and far East Ridge area avalanche risk is still high, propagating from Jan 25th layer or deeper. Until the wind drops and slab development settles down it is best not to ride these areas. Traversing cornice slopes is dangerous. Snow in the trees is reset and in good shape. All gates are expected to open. Please listen to the patrols advice. Prepare before going out of bounds. Beacon and helmets are recommended. Being aware can prevent many accidents. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Naeba! It's a snowy, blustery morning up in Mikuni valley today. The air temperature is a cool -7°C, but the moderate wind is making it feel a little cooler than this. We should expect the snow to continue throughout the day, but accumulations will likely be modest. With the addition 13cm of fresh snow in the past 24 hours, we have had 92cm at the base so far during "Storm Finn". The pistes will be fresh today, likely with some powder stashes hidden where the wind can't get! The stronger winds overnight will have stripped some aspects and deposited on others, so seeking out the right aspect will get you the good snow today. Looking forwards, we should expect a dramatic change in the weather tomorrow, with calm winds and clearer skies. Air temperatures are expected to increase significantly, to around -1°C at the base. Into Monday, we can expect some more unsettled weather to blow through the valley, bringing a little snow and cooler temperatures again. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . The report is late today so I guess it is more of a wrap up of the day. There was moderate snowfall overnight and then quite a bit accumulated mid morning as well, bringing the total since the last report to 20cm. On the resort it was fantastic this morning with large areas left ungroomed and plenty of trackless powder for everyone. The day started of with low cloud on the resort, which limited visibility on the upper half of the mountain and then later the cloud lifted, although light was still flat at times. Continuous light snow is forecast through tomorrow and then some heavy snow Sunday night. Kitanomine Zone open. Furano Zone open.
