  • Nozawa Now: Sunday 18th February 2018

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 47cm Snowfall at base this season 669cm Posted on Sunday 18th February 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . The snow really started coming down during the day yesterday! Nozawa was reporting 20-25cm of fresh snowfall across the mountain by 3pm. This morning we're still dealing with lots more additional snow - this morning the resort is reporting up to 46cm of snow up on Yamabiko... that's on top of the snow they were reporting yesterday at 3pm. So I am not wrong, they are effectively reporting over 70cm up top with 45cm at base since yesterday morning. There's certainly a lot of fresh snow built up even down here at base. Tons of it. So while conditions might still be dicey for some people - poor visibility, wind, deep snow - if you are keen to brave the current conditions you'll be rewarded with some excellent snow conditions. More snow during the day today and the snow clouds may still be over Nozawa tomorrow too. Fingers crossed for less wind and improved visibility. Take care out there and have fun. Fresh snowfall since yesterday (as reported by the resort): - Yamabiko (1407m): 71cm - Uenotaira (1230m): 48cm - Hikage (660m): 48cm - Nagasaka (615m): 48cm - Karasawa (563m): 45cm Official snow depth numbers: - Yamabiko (1407m): 365cm - Uenotaira (1230m): 285cm - Hikage (660m): 200cm - Nagasaka (615m): 200cm - Karasawa (563m): 170cm Lifts operations: - All scheduled lifts appear to be operating as normal. - The Yunomine pair, Mizunashi triple, Challenge pair and Utopia pair lifts usually rested on weekdays. The following courses either closed (or not fully available): - Grand Prix - Kandahar Nozawa Now 2017-2018 season Data as of Sunday 18th February 2018 Total snowfall at base 669cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 49 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 53cm (27th December) November 2017 snowfall 21cm reported on 2 days December 2017 snowfall 217cm reported on 16 days January 2018 snowfall 325cm reported on 20 days February 2018 snowfall 106cm reported on 11 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Nozawa Onsen. • Naeba Now: Sunday 18th February 2018

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Naeba region of Niigata New snowfall at base 51cm Snowfall at base this season 849cm Posted on Sunday 18th February 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Naeba! It was a snow-globe day yesterday, with "Storm Halle" hitting with full force. This is the first significant storm system we have had move through since later January, so the fresh, deeper snow is a welcomed surprise. With heavy snow continuing to fall as I type, we have already had accumilations of 51cm in the past 24 hours. The snowfall is forecast to ease off as the day goes on, however there are no signs of any let up yet. The air temperature is a cool -7°C this morning, with no expectation that it will increase above this today. The wind has dropped significantly, however there is a breeze continuing to bring in this heavy snowfall. The pistes will be fresh and fun, with fresh lines for everyone, however the lifts are likely to be slow to get going this morning due to the snowfall. Looking forwards, "Sotmr Halle" looks set to stick around until tomorrow morning, with further snowfall lightening but continuing throughout today. The winds will continue to ease all through the night, dropping off signfiicantly tomorrow. The air temperature will also increase tomorrow morning to a more comfortable -1°C, however it is predicted to remain below 0°C until at least Thursday. We can expect the snow to clear tomorrow breifly, however it will be back on Tuesday with further moderate snowfall. • Shiga Kogen Now: Saturday 17th February 2018

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 769cm Posted on Saturday 17th February 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Shiga Kogen. I'm feeling a bit better this morning. And it is good to see some snow falling outside my window, though I'm keeping wrapped up and inside myself over the weekend. I can see 1cm of snow on the top of my car outside so it looks like it could be quickly building up. (All this considering that it was actually much clearer very early on this morning). The forecasts seem to be pointing to snowy (maybe windy) conditions into tomorrow. • Niseko Now: Saturday 17th February 2018

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 21cm Snowfall at base this season 1076cm Posted on Saturday 17th February 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here More fresh snow this morning with 21cm measured and added to my reports. Not bad... not bad. (I'm just kidding - it's really great!) But forgive me for refraining from my head overheating and exploding (or is that imploding?) due to overuse of cheesy over-the-top descriptions. It's kind of amusing in a weary kind of way, but I'll leave that kind of stuff for bar talk and marketing dudes. Some heavier snow was falling earlier on this morning. That had eased a little while ago, but as of 8:20am it is snowing lightly again. Is that the sun breaking through some clouds again? Confusing! Anyway, bottom line - lots of people around with exciting regular snowfall that is filling in tracks. All is good and I'm glad that Niseko is delivering for this very busy period. Hope some of you are out enjoying it. :) --- You might notice that the official snow depth for the upper part of Niseko Grand Hirafu has now bust through the 5m mark. Let's comparing: Niseko Grand Hirafu: 510cm Niseko Village: 390cm Niseko Annupuri: 390cm Why the big difference some of you ask? Well, that's best asked of the people providing such numbers - ie. not me or SnowJapan. In my humble opinion, official snow depth numbers are an interesting 'background number' looking at the season as a whole. A big base is of course great for a potentially long season: but it's always the amount of freshly fallen snow that is the much more important bit of info. You might notice that some resorts in Japan almost never change their official snow depth, over long periods when there are milder conditions and also fresh snowfall. Check out Kagura (in Yuzawa, Niigata) as a good example. That has to be one of the most unrealistically static bits of data out there! --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6am: -6℃, 15cm snowfall. Moiwa800m: -7.8℃, SE5.7m/s, 20cm snowfall, no snowdrift. Annupuri1150m: -9℃, SE10m/s, 20cm snowfall. Hirafu1250m: -10℃, SE15m/s, 10cm snowfall. Coastal data: Benkei cape S7m/s, Kamui cape SE2m/s, 998hPa, 0.6m waves. Calm morning, with typical pre low-pressure snowfall since before dawn. Looking at the past 12 hours snowfall transition and test results, the snowdrifts that developed until yesterday are now mostly stable. The general avalanche risk is relatively low. Gates opening is yet to be decided. Please follow the patrol’s instructions. Many uneven layers are still present in the snowdrifts that developed in the past 4 days. Avalanches from deeper layers caused by strong stimulations, such as falling cornices, are to be highly expected. Stay away from cornice slopes and gullies even if the gates open. Many of the past avalanche accidents occurred when skiing unstable wind-loaded steep slopes during and just after stormy conditions. Today’s snow is quite better than yesterday’s. Avoid cornices and drop in from the ridges. Do not cut/traverse knolls. Stay alert as heavy low-pressure snowfall can cause loose snow avalanches in the forests. Beware of hidden cracks. The snowfall will pick up again as the low-pressure passes. Have a nice day. --- Saturday 17th February 2018 Resort specific information (operations subject to change): Niseko Grand Hirafu & Niseko HANAZONO Resort Lifts scheduled to be operating: - All lifts (apart from King Number 2) should be operating - Top Ace, King Number 4 and Hanazono Number 3 lifts on hold at the start of the day due to weather conditions Official snow depth: - Top: 510cm - Base: 250cm Niseko Annupuri Kokusai Lifts scheduled to be operating: - All lifts should be operating Official snow depth: - Top: 390cm - Base: 260cm Niseko Village Lifts scheduled to be operating: - All lifts (apart from the Country Road Chair lift) should be operating Official snow depth: - Top: 390cm - Base: 280cm Niseko Now 2017-2018 season Data as of Saturday 17th February 2018 Total snowfall at base so far 1076cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 77 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 45cm (31st December) November 2017 snowfall 188cm reported on 11 days December 2017 snowfall 406cm reported on 27 days January 2018 snowfall 305cm reported on 26 days February 2018 snowfall 177cm reported on 13 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Kutchan/Niseko. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 17cm Snowfall at base this season 1055cm Posted on Friday 16th February 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Happy Chinese New Year! And to celebrate, how about lots of fresh new snowfall once again. I have 17cm to add to my observed snowfall here at base, with most of that coming from yesterday. Check out the Avalanche report below; their numbers are 30-40cm of fresh at higher elevations. In short - lots more fresh snow since yesterday. It was snowing still when I got up earlier, but as I started writing this report there was actually some sunshine coming through my window and the snow had eased off. Since then and as I get to post the report, the sun is back in hiding and there is some very light snow falling. There's a bit of wind blowing the flags I can see across the road and it looks like the top lift at Annupuri is going to be on hold. Latest info on lifts as I post the report below... The forecast remains good for continued snowy conditions over the coming week. Look out for some potential heavy snow and winds tomorrow. --- I was just looking at the numbers from previous seasons (below). Last season I observed 160cm of snowfall during the full month of February. With todays haul, my number for this month in the first 16 days is close to that at 156cm. Still a ways to go before reaching the 266cm I observed in February 2016. Let's see if we can 'beat' that. If the forecasts are right, I think we might. --- This weekend the busiest weekend of the season? It may well be. Have you booked a restaurant yet? If not, be sure to get to the convenience store quickly before it sells out! --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6am: -7℃, 40cm snowfall in the last 24 hours. Moiwa 800m: -10.2℃, NW19,6m/s at 4am, 30cm snowfall with snowdrift/cornice development. Annupuri 1150m: -13℃, stormy condition, bad visibility, 350cm snowpack at 1000m elevation. Hirafu 1250m: -13℃, strong NW wind, 30cm snowfall with heavy snowdrift development. Coastal data: Benkei cape NW14m/s, Kamui cape NW11m/s, 1011hPa, 2.2m waves. Storm continues and the growing cornices/snowdrifts are very unstable. The avalanche risk in Mikaeri Bowl, Back bowl, Osawa and far side Higashi-One is very high and will remain high all day even if the wind calms down. Peak gates will be closed. Do not duck ropes to access fresh tracks. The conditions in the trees is awesome, however better stick on ridge terrain to ride down and stay away from gullies and slopes with cornices above. Choose your route wisely today. Ride one by one and do not stay put at the bottom of the valleys. Stay within controllable speed and watch out for cracks. Better not stimulate cornices and knoll terrains. Is your avalanche beacon switched on? Are you wearing a helmet? Although not mandatory, it is highly recommended to wear those safety equipment. A strong north westerly wind is persisting above 1000m elevation.
