The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Welcome back to all those searching for Furano snow information that is independent and reliable. It has been a slow start to winter this year with the warm weather from Autumn persisting much longer than is normal. It would be reasonable to expect that the first snow in the Kitanomine ski village would have fallen about a month ago, however the first snow to fall and settle on the ground has just happened today. In the last few days there has been light snow on the upper mountain of the ski area that has stuck around, and with todays snowfall I would expect the mountain to remain white from top to bottom from now on. Wintery temperatures are forecast for the rest of the week along with further snow. Furano Ski Resort has a proposed opening date of 24 November but unfortunately it looks unlikely they will be able to open that soon, unless a huge amount of snow arrives over the next few days. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . One month to go to the official opening, a touch of snow on the peak, so time, I think, for a pre-report on the 2018-2019 season. Actually, it's a little less than a month for most of the resorts: Akakan on 12/15, Akakura Onsen on 12/12, Ikenotaira on 12/16, Suginohara and Seki Onsen on 12/22. I would not plan a vacation based on those dates, though; there have been a lot of years where we really wonder if we're going to have a white Christmas or not. While it almost always turns out that we get a merry dusting of white, the conditions on the hill can be a little thin. Still more fun than scraping along on artificial snow, but something to keep in mind. I actually heard about some guests who wanted to do some backcountry touring around Christmas; that's not going to happen (remember that this is almost a rain forest area in summer; takes a good dump of snow to push down the saplings and cover the grape vines). Since we're talking rainforest, it was a wet last part of the summer here. Hot and dry to start the summer, then lots of rain. Akakan has been running the gondola in summer, which is a nice thing to do here - get up higher, enjoy a lunch on the mountain, take a hike through the buna (beech) forests. But the numbers were down because it was pretty wet for the main part of the tourism season. The gondola also serves as one of the best ways for climbing Mt. Myoko, as the route is shorter than from Tsubame Onsen to the north. No major changes at the resorts, as all the owners have remained the same with no big changes to infrastructure. We'd like to hear more from the newest member of the community, Lotte Arai, as there just isn't a lot of communication to the community. The people who did go during the season said they had the place to themselves, and a lot of the local schools extended their season by heading over to Arai. For the moment it's very un-wintery. We often get one big dump of wet, heavy snow about this time of year which brings down trees and incites panic in all those who haven't changed to snow tires, but it could be a while for that. A little bit might be falling higher up over the next week, but it doesn't look like it will come down to base level. So that's where we are. Quiet, fall colors gone, not as grim as some Novembers can be and really ready for the snow to fall (my snow tires are on). The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Shiga Kogen. As with many regions of Japan, it has been relatively mild over the last few weeks. The good news is that this morning feels rather cold and there is some light snow falling and a thin layer of snow on the ground in places. I was just over in Ichinose and feel confident that I can 'award' the reports 1cm. Right now the sun is out. The Kumanoyu resort area has been trying to pump out some 'snow' from the snow-making machines, but they have this morning said that they have stopped due to temperature. It is looking like their hoped-for planned opening this Saturday (17th November) is going to be very (very) difficult. I wouldn't expect it. The forecast for later on next week looks like it might be quite encouraging. I'll be with you again next week! The section of the Route 292 road that connects Shiga Kogen with Gunma Prefecture will be closed for the winter from 1:00pm today - and it will then be closed until 19th April 2019. Access to Shiga Kogen is by Route 292 from the north-west. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning and welcome to the Nozawa Now reports for the upcoming 2018-2019 winter season. It was a hot summer in Japan, but things have been cooling down very quickly in recent weeks - and yesterday there was some white frosting going on up top. (It is fine weather this morning and over the coming few days things will be warming up somewhat according to the forecasts). Nozawa Onsen is gearing up for a busy season and we are likely to see even more international guests descend on the village this time round. Hopefully, as Nozawa continues to get more famous and popular it will still be able to retain most of it's unique charm. I am confident it will. The resort plans to be open from Friday 23rd November which is just three weeks from now. Note that if they are able to do that, it will almost surely be just the top area. We shall see. I will be back with a few more reports before that date, especially if there is any noteworthy news. Once the lifts start moving, daily reports should be appearing. Here's to a great season. It has been getting cold (though over the next few days it will be less so...) And the first sprinklings of snow have been spotted on upper ski slopes of the mountains. All exciting stuff. My last report which included a 2017-2018 season wrap up was on 6th May, so that was almost six months ago. Since then, Japan has endured a rather hot summer and more than a fair share of nature-related 'events' too. Various typhoons, flooding and that earthquake up in Hokkaido all made international news. We got some very heavy rain but avoided too much drama from all of that lot. Hopefully, Nature will decide to give us a particularly consistently snowy winter! After a spell of colder conditions, yesterday saw a change with things warming up and a real feel of spring with clear and sunny skies and warmer temperatures. There's quite a bit of cloud around this morning, but sun is what the forecasts say - for tomorrow as well. It will be warm today, but warmer still tomorrow with some forecasts showing a high of around 25C being possible! That sounds more like summer than spring to me! The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. I was actually in Nagano for most of the day yesterday so didn't make it out on the mountain. I don't think they were kidding me, but a friend said they got 'hail'-ed on yesterday! It did seem to be rather mixed weather conditions during the day, for sure. This morning there is some cloud hanging around the mountain peaks but it is mostly clear blue skies and sunshine. A lovely morning and feels relatively chilly and the temp at village level only due to rise to around 10C. Tomorrow should be a bit warmer but later in the day there's some rain there on the forecast. Some showing 'heavy' rain. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . And a very good Monday morning to you from Hakuba. You want more fresh snow? We got it! Oh yeah. This rather excite blast of winter in early April continues. Here is the snow headlines from the resorts: Happo-one: 15cm (top Gondola station) Hakuba Goryu: 10cm (base); 15cm (upper) Hakuba 47: 10cm (base); 15cm (upper) Another 10cm at base! Great stuff. (Less important but nice to see the official snow depth numbers going up as well). Over at Goryu, the Toomi quad lift is now closed but you can still ride down to base. At Happo-one you can still ride down to base at Nakiyama South but otherwise need to get the Gondola back down to base. Anyway, details are updated below and we'll keep an eye on those every morning. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. Reports of snow and indeed sightings of snow! :) I have just come back from a walk around the base of the resort. A lovely brisk early Sunday morning walk, and fairly chilly conditions as well. Nice. I also notice the resort have uploaded a photo from the ski jump area near base - see below for that. There's not a huge amount of snow of course, but it is always great to see fresh on the ground. Love it. The resort itself is recording 5cm at the top Yamabiko area of the resort and no other numbers, but I would be mistaken not to log at least 1cm this morning from the snow we got by base. So, that reported 5cm up top should provide some nicely improved conditions first thing this morning and early tracks should be rewarded. Temperatures will probably start rising once again from tomorrow. Let's quickly get past the wind of yesterday and report -- we have decent snowfall in Hakuba this Sunday morning, folks. :) Check this out, headlines first. This is how much snow the resorts are reporting: Hakuba Happo-one: 25cm at Gondola top station Hakuba Goryu: 10cm (base); 30cm (top) Hakuba 47: 10cm (base); 20cm (top) - they are reporting close on 20cm in some areas near base Tsugaike Kogen: they have increased their upper official snow depth by 30cm We are reporting 8-10cm from base areas. There's snow along the side of the roads and everywhere is looking 'winter' once again. Bottom line? It should be a particularly exciting April morning and people who are hear absolutely need to get their gear on and check it out. Fantastic. And that is all for today. I hope you can enjoy it. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . After getting used to the spring weather, this morning is a throw back to winter. Temperatures have dipped below freezing and some snow has fallen, blanketing the village in a thin layer of nice white snow. The last time we had snow was March 20. There are strong winds gusting at the moment and moving large trees around quite a bit. Above it is mostly cloudy but there is a bit of blue sky over the slopes and sun shining down. Furano Zone open. Kitanomine Zone closed for the season. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here After the wet of yesterday, thick fog down to base areas early this morning but sun is forecast and indeed away from the mountain some blue skies are visible. The Spring Park at Hirafu - which is now generally open - is, er, closed today due to the weather conditions. I hope that kind of makes sense! A look back at the season so far: March 2018 It is time for a look back the month of March and the season so far here in Niseko. And as always, I would like to remind you that all of the numbers from these reports are available at any time on each of the archived Niseko Now report pages. They are linked below. And there’s some really cool graphs going on if you click on that big blue tab titled ‘Snowfall Analysis’ at the top of this page. So...March 2018. Here’s the snowfall that I have measured near the base of Niseko Grand Hirafu over the last six seasons in the month of March: March 2018: 49cm March 2017: 83cm March 2016: 109cm March 2015: 139cm March 2014: 113cm March 2013: 164cm On previous form we were hoping for around 1m of snow but in the end, we got just half of that. A disappointing showing, certainly. But the low snowfall count wasn’t just a Niseko thing, or a Hokkaido thing. It looks like it was a Japan thing. It seems that this season - to varying degrees - most of Japan clicked into ‘spring mode’ just as soon as the month started. And with our 49cm of snow at base here in Niseko, we actually did better than many regions of Japan. A quick look at some of the other Now daily reports here on SnowJapan will confirm that. Observed snowfall at base for the season up until the end of March: OK, so March was disappointing in terms of fresh snowfall but how has that affected the ‘season so far’ numbers? 17/18 season total up until the end of March 2018: 1247cm 16/17 season total up until the end of March 2017: 688cm 15/16 season total up until the end of March 2016: 992cm 14/15 season total up until the end of March 2015: 1144cm 13/14 season total up until the end of March 2014: 1163cm 12/13 season total up until the end of March 2013: 1491cm Looking at the season as a whole, things suddenly look so much better. 12.5m? Impressive! Over the 2017-2018 season, we have still received way more snowfall than during the 2016-2017 season and considerably more than the season before that too. The first half of the 2017-2018 season was indeed very special indeed, and we need to remember that. At the same time, we also need to remember that next season might be the same, it might be the other way round (with a better late than early season), or it might well be totally mixed up and be nothing like either of those patterns. Oh, the fun of relying on the weather! What to expect from the month of April April is usually the month when spring takes full control. Here’s how much snowfall I have observed here at base over the previous five seasons: April 2017: 0cm April 2016: 6cm April 2015: 3cm April 2014: 13cm April 2013: 32cm With the way March went, more fresh snowfall this season feels somehow unlikely – but then again, as I write this I am looking at the forecast which seems to be telling me that we might get some fresh snowfall at the end of the week, with the better chance of that as you go higher (meaning more likely rain at base). So, you never know. Let’s see. Whether we get any more or not, there is still a lot of snow left on the slopes so they will surely have no problems remaining open until Golden Week in early May.
