The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from my secret Hirafu base where things are looking very wintery. So we move into December, an as planned all four of the Niseko United resorts are now open, with lifts at Niseko Village and Niseko HANAZONO starting to move as this report goes live. Niseko HANAZONO plan to have all three of their lifts moving today with 'top to bottom' skiing possible. Don't worry, snowboarders. Presumably top to bottom snowboarding is possible too! ;) Over at Niseko Village, the Upper Village Gondola (which is actually by base) and the Community Chair lifts are starting their season; so the action there is down by the base area for now. Niseko Grand Hirafu are adding some new lifts too, including the Hirafu Gondola - but you still need to get either the Gondola or Ace Number 2 quad lift back down. And as I mentioned yesterday, the lower Dream Number 1 Quad Lift at Niseko Annupuri is opening this morning from 9:00am. The nearby Moiwa area is also planning on opening from tomorrow. Phew. I think I have got all that lot right! In all that excitement, I almost forgot to tell you the good snow news. There's more to report this morning with 20cm of fresh being measured by myself. And it looks really nice quality too. So to sum up this morning... hurray! ----- Niseko Avalanche Report: A big thank you and 'otsukaresama in advance' to the very good folk putting the avalanche reports together. The first one of the season... Moiwa base 6am: -5℃, snowing, 20cm of snowfall in the past 12hours. Minimal wind influence. Sea of Japan Benkei cape: NW9m/s, Kamui cape: 1.4m waves, 1014hPa. Moiwa 850m and Annupuri 1100m wind data is not yet available. NW15m/s snow & wind at 1200m elevation made cornices and snowdrifts slowly develop. Slides from 11/28 layer are likely to occur in leeward exposed 40°slopes. Beware when touring in the backcountry. Avalanches will happen when the conditions align, no matter the snowpack depth and will only be an accident if a person is involved in it. Out of bounds area is still closed and is not suitable for riding yet. Beware of bushes, dirt, rocks and other obstacles in the ungroomed snow. Need to wait for some more snowfall. Better be patient and not waste the season with an early injury. The resorts course conditions are yet to be at its best. Niseko's out of bounds riding is supported by the strong work of the ski patrols, lift staffs and cat operators. Please respect their work and the Niseko Rules. Slightly colder it is, though it is still rather mild and there's no new snow to report other than an ever so slight dusting at higher elevations. Temps down here in the village will be around 8C-9C today and tomorrow. Currently there is lots of white and grey cloud around with some blue sky in places. Warmer conditions are expected to be back with us Monday/Tuesday and there may be some heavy rain coming too. It would be good if we could flush this last bit of autumn out of the system and get down to some proper winter after that. (Obviously!) The latest Furano Now report can be found here . The snow started last night and came down heavily through until morning. This morning there was 41cm of fresh snow on the ground in the village and the resort reported 48cm at the top of the ropeway. The snow was relatively heavy and was just exactly what was needed to bulk up the base. This is the first significant snowfall of the season at village level. Although nice and sunny through the day the temperatures were cold and this allowed the resort to really blast the snowmakers on the lower slopes to give nature a helping hand. Hopefully this new snow is enough for the resort to open up a run down to the base on the Furano Zone tomorrow. Furano Zone is open with Furano Ropeway for uplifting/down lifting only. The skiable trails are Shirakaba and upper Sailer, with the Downhill 2 chair servicing those trails. Furano Zone partially open. Kitanomine Zone closed. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here 1:45pm update: I have waited as late as I can to make this update (I need to get myself somewhere else for the rest of the day). The only news I have at the moment is that the Niseko Annupuri resort plans to have their Dream Number 1 quad lift operating from tomorrow morning in addition to what they have going today. That lift should be open 9:00am until 4:30pm. Dreamy! I'll be checking and updating all available information for my report tomorrow. * All other info in this report remains as it was when first posted this morning. --- Original morning report: Good morning from Niseko and here we are on the last day of November 2018. Fresh snowfall news? I have measured 15cm of fresh snow to round off the month, bringing us to a total of 84cm of snowfall measured at base this season so far. I'll make more comments on that in my report on Monday. So yes, it's good news this morning. It is definitely colder - the coldest yet this season - and great to see that fresh snow on the ground. As always, there should be more at higher elevations so there should be some fun to be had this morning. Snow is forecast for today and tomorrow, perhaps easing off and clearing during Sunday. Operations are still very limited and at the time of writing unchanged. Tomorrow of course the Niseko Village and Niseko HANAZONO areas plan to open for the season. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . The snow flurries continued through the day yesterday with no accumulation on the ground until early evening. This morning the ground in the ski village is well and truly frozen, and there is 3cm of fresh light snow on the ground. The resort is reporting 20cm at the top of Furano Ropeway. There is a light breeze and although mainly cloudy, a bit of sun is making its way through. Overall quite a pleasant day and worth popping up for a ski on that fresh snow. Furano Zone is open with Furano Ropeway for uplifting/down lifting only. The skiable trails are Shirakaba and upper Sailer, with the Downhill 2 chair servicing those trails. Not a whole lot of fresh snow down at base so far - ever so slightly over 1cm - but it is definitely colder with the temperature back down below zero (where it jolly well should be) and we are expecting snow to be falling every day now through until Sunday. Just how much, I will let you know every morning. For the moment it is mostly cloudy with some very light snow falling in places but some sun actually shining through in others. Pretty. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Furano Ski Area did a great job of getting the ski area open as planned yesterday on 24 November. Despite the scarcity of snow this season at village level the coverage on the open trails was not too bad, with a bit of bush coming through as is always the case at opening. This morning there was about 3cm fresh snow at base level, but temperatures spiked to +7c during the day and brought rain in the afternoon. The warm weather is affecting the snow up higher and some ground was visible on trail today. Just to recap the ski area status: Furano Zone is open with Furano Ropeway for uplifting/down lifting only. The skiable trails are Shirakaba and upper Sailer, with the Downhill 2 chair servicing those trails. Furano Zone open. Kitanomine Zone closed. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here A decent start! I was able to snatch one hour out there yesterday. Such a great feeling after six month or so of forced rest, and the limited terrain and not-as-good-as-peak-season-snow doesn't seem to dampen spirits at all at the start of the season. There's more snow to report (18cm) since yesterday but it has eased off now. Actually when I got up a little earlier it was more like sleet coming down and when I just went outside to check it was more like... rain. Not much though for the moment. It is noticeably milder this morning and even milder conditions are forecast over the coming few days, so we probably can't expect much in terms of snowfall and should brace ourselves for the times of rain as well. Later in the week should see temps drop once again and the return of snow clouds. Niseko Annupuri joins the fun this morning so there are two choices here in Niseko. Details below. Looks like we should expect milder conditions and clearer skies in the coming days with little chance of more snow. I'll get back to you later in the coming week with any further news.
