- Hakuba Now: Monday 31st December 2018
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 3cm Snowfall at base this season 112cm Posted on Monday 31st December 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Ah, the last day of the year. I have 3cm of fresh snow to report on the ground and here is what the resorts are saying: Cortina: 2cm Iwatake: 10cm Happo-one: 5cm Hakuba 47: 5cm Hakuba Goryu: 5cm There are light snow clouds over the mountains but clearer looking over towards the east. All base areas of Happo-one are now open. The sun is trying to break through now in places and we can expect some sunshine tomorrow too, but the snow clouds will be back over us and hopefully delivering by Wednesday. Have yourself and fun and safe New Years Eve. Oh yes, just one thing... Some people have mentioned the observed snowfall numbers for Hakuba not being as large as other areas. And that may well be true - Hakuba village level often does not get dumped on as much as some other base areas. (And only someone outright lying can try to tell you otherwise). But Hakuba does have great vertical and more snow does fall on the mountain - as I report to you every day within the reports when such information is available. And that's where you ski or board, right? I can only report to you what I observe. We are not here to mislead and tell porkies. In fact, we're kind of here to do the opposite of that. But do not worry: now that resorts are mostly open with enough snow and we get regular quality snow on the mountains, you can look forward to some very fine Hakuba conditions. :) As we have said many times, it is best not to just look at the headline numbers and/or compare the different regional reports like-for-like, as each region has it's own particular story and circumstance. - Shiga Kogen Now: Sunday 30th December 2018
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 28cm Snowfall at base this season 156cm Posted on Sunday 30th December 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Morning from Shiga Kogen. It has been snowing since my last report and it is still snowing. After waiting around for decent snowfall for literally weeks, we get dumped on big style over the period of three days. Kumanoyu are reporting 20cm of snowfall and Yakebitaiyama are reporting about 40cm. I have measured 28cm for this report. Wind has been blowing the snow around so it is going to be more or less in places. But wherever you look - lots. It's a good problem to have. Really fine snow quality too. After today the forecasts show a chance of the sun making a special appearance. It is surely going to be The Law to get out on the slopes if that happens and be very special. Snow is due back once again mid week. All areas of Shiga Kogen are now (mostly) open. - Nozawa Now: Sunday 30th December 2018
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 30cm Snowfall at base this season 178cm Posted on Sunday 30th December 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Snow snow snow! Tons of it. This is true Nozawa-style snowfall and one of the main reasons why we love this place so much. The fresh snowfall numbers below are what the resort has recorded since 3pm yesterday and does not include snow during the day yesterday (apologies, I was unable to check and make a note of those numbers in time). So there is at least 30+cm fresh since yesterday up top - and I am guessing a fair bit more than that. I have measured about 30cm in a few areas around base this morning. For four days from today through 2nd January, lifts will be opening 30 minutes earlier than usual. All lifts are operating (apart from Kandahar) and all but five courses are open. This is Nozawa at close on full power. Expect lots of people to be enjoying the mountain with you - but there should be more than enough powder out there now for us all to enjoy. Some kind locals may well even share some 'secret top tips' if you ask them nicely... From tomorrow the snow should be easing off and there may be some sun. The snow clouds should be back over us come Wednesday though. Take care and hope you can be here to enjoy it. Fresh snowfall recorded by resort (since 3pm yesterday): - Yamabiko (1407m): 30cm - Uenotaira (1230m): 20cm - Hikage (660m): 20cm - Nagasaka (615m): 20cm - Karasawa (563m): 10cm Official snow depth numbers: - Yamabiko (1407m): 200cm - Uenotaira (1230m): 180cm - Hikage (660m): 110cm - Nagasaka (615m): 95cm - Karasawa (563m): 80cm Nozawa Now 2018-2019 season Data as of Sunday 30th December 2018 Total snowfall at base 178cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 13 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 34cm (15th December) November 2018 snowfall 2cm reported on 1 day December 2018 snowfall 176cm reported on 12 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Nozawa Onsen. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Madarao region of Nagano New snowfall at base 27cm Snowfall at base this season 240cm Weather overview Snow Wind Light to moderate Temperature - Visibility Poor Posted on Sunday 30th December 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Hello and morning from Madarao. If you were hoping for a calm and sunny New Year, you will be disappointed. Madarao are reporting 30cm of snow since yesterday morning and I have measured 27cm. The official snow depth, for what that is worth, is now up to 190cm at Madarao and 140cm at the adjoining Tangram Ski Circus. There seems to be some kind of trouble with the Super Quad lift at Madarao at the start of the day, let's hope they can get that sorted. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 38cm Snowfall at base this season 128cm Posted on Saturday 29th December 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning. Heavy snow alert! This is what we want. This morning Kumanoyu are reporting 50cm of fresh and Yakebitaiyama are reporting 40cm. I am measuring 38cm. Whatever - loads of fresh snow around as this mid-winter storm continues (and blows the snow around too) - and there's more left in the tank through tomorrow if the forecasts are right. (So how can resort areas be reporting as little as 25cm snow depth, you may ask? Answers on a postcard to those people please! I'll refrain from telling you my theory!) More now opening up with all areas now at least part open and most lifts moving... as you might expect as New Year fast approaches. With another day or two of snowfall, perhaps we'll be close to being fully open. Resort areas declaring themselves as fully open: - Kumanoyu - Ichinose Yamanokami & Diamond - Mammoth - Tannenomori - Okushiga Kogen That doesn't give the whole picture of course as some of those are small areas - a bigger area like Yakebitaiyama is mostly open and they have all their lifts moving. Anyway, some more snow please. Let's get into full swing! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 26cm Snowfall at base this season 148cm Posted on Saturday 29th December 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from a snowy Nozawa. The official snowfall numbers from the resort are a bit all over the place since yesterday - with around 10-30cm reported by the afternoon and another 10-15cm this morning, leaving us with the numbers shown below. Since my report yesterday I have measured a further 26cm. Whatever - we have had continued snowfall and there's a really decent amount of it out there; and certainly a lot of it on the upper slopes. More runs are open now - including Skyline - but the day is starting with the Nagasaka Gondola halted due to some kind of mechanical issue. The resort is recommending folk to take the other Gondola if you want to get up top. Hopefully they will get that sorted quickly. There's lots of snow still left on the forecast... get used to it! :) Take care and enjoy.
