  • Yuzawa Now: Saturday 3rd March 2018

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 854cm Posted on Saturday 3rd March 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. There was more light snowfall during the day on and off yesterday and it didn’t really amount to much in terms of new cm, and there was even some sunshine at times in places. It remained quite cold too and didn’t get too far above zero which was a good thing. Visitors for the weekend (and the ski resorts themselves) will be thankful for that delivery of snow after what we got yesterday! This morning, it is sunshine from the start. A beautiful day is on the cards. We have been expecting warmer conditions this weekend and it still looks like what we are going to get. By lunchtime it might be as warm as 10C in town as the sun gets to work. On Sunday the freezing level will zoom right up to around 3500m and we might experience temperatures even above 15C! That’s going to melt some snow and boggle some minds. Very happily, come Monday it should start getting colder and we might get some fresh. Possibly even heavy snow in higher elevations. That’s more like it! It’s the 66th Yuzawa Snow Festival in town tonight. If you are interested in checking it out, head over to the West side of the station and follow the people towards Yuzawa Kogen and the Nunoba slopes. Festivities are due to begin at 6pm with fireworks around 8:40pm. --- Ski resorts in Yuzawa: Checked and updated every morning. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. And I am very glad to report a bit of fresh snow on the ground. It's not a lot - just a sprinkling of 1-2cm or so - but it is still better than the rain we had to put up with. Kagura resort is reporting 3-5cm fresh snow and Maiko Snow Resort are actually reporting 5-10cm, so that's good to hear. We are expecting clearer skies during the day today and actually a fair bit of sunshine over the coming week if the forecasts are correct. It's colder this morning but early week those spring like temperatures are due back too. --- Ski resorts in Yuzawa: Checked and updated every morning. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good afternoon from Yuzawa. It was approaching 20 degrees in town yesterday which is pretty shocking, so I am happy to report a real drop in temperatures this morning. Unfortunately, it has also been raining lightly at town level as temperatures level off at around 4-5C today. Some very light snow at Naeba best and some snow falling at higher elevations too but not the kind that is going to build up to anything significant. Tomorrow should remain on the colder side of things but sunny skies are forecast with temperatures rising again on Sunday. --- Ski resorts in Yuzawa: Checked and updated every morning. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We have light wet snow falling at some higher elevations and rain down in town this morning. Hopefully by this afternoon it will be drier and from tomorrow we have lots of sunshine and clearer skies on the forecast right into at least the middle of next week and some warm conditions too (especially from Monday onwards). So it should be fine weather over the weekend. Full on spring snow conditions of course but come with that in mind and there's still a lot of fun to be had. • Yuzawa Now: Friday 30th March 2018

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 856cm Posted on Friday 30th March 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We did get rained on later in the day yesterday, but it is dry this morning with an early mix of blue sky and cloud - both white and grey. Sunny skies are what the forecasts tell us to expect today and without wanting to sound repetitive, that is what we should be having until at least the middle of next week too. And while it is going to be a little colder today (a high of about 8C expected in town), it will be warming up again from tomorrow with temperatures reaching 20C on Sunday and early in the week. People who suffer from hay fever come prepared - a high pollen count is also likely, especially from Sunday. There are now just three days left in the season for a few ski resorts in the area. From Monday I will be re-arranging the resort specific data posted below. --- Ski resorts in Yuzawa: Checked and updated every morning. • Yuzawa Now: Sunday 8th April 2018

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 857cm Posted on Sunday 8th April 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa on this last day of the season for the Iwappara ski resort in Yuzawa and the Ishiuchi Maruyama, Maiko Snow Resort and Joetsu Kokusai resorts in neighbouring Minamiuonuma. We were hoping that there might be a chance of some light snow this morning. So how did that go? 2cm of fresh snow is being reported by the higher Kagura resort. And 5cm is being reported by Maiko Snow Resort. We can probably expect somewhere around at other higher elevations around Yuzawa. Around town, it's more like just a dusting - none in some places a more in others, but I am going to be generous and add 1cm to the report today. As well as GALA Yuzawa, the images today (below) are from the Yuzawa IC exit of Route 17 in Yuzawa and the webcam from Route 17 between the Tashiro Ropeway and Naeba (labelled as Mikuni Route 17 on the Webcam page). You can see that dusting in town as well as more on the road on the way up to Naeba. Rain / sleet / light snow had been falling in various parts of the area early on but I just went outside and there was nothing falling... and it looks like there is increasing blue sky appearing to the north. Perhaps we might enjoy some clearer weather as the day progresses? It's keeping relatively cold though so if you plan to go out get wrapped up and enjoy! --- From tomorrow (Monday), only Kagura, GALA Yuzawa and Kandatsu Kogen will remain open daily - with Naeba planning to open up on weekends. Daily reports on Yuzawa Now will continue until Sunday 6th May and a weekly update beyond that until the lifts come to a halt at Kagura. --- At least part open until Sunday 8th April: Iwappara - Official snow depth: 40cm - The central area remains open with two lifts (Number 2 and Number 3 pair lifts) operating Ishiuchi Maruyama - Official snow depth: 90cm - Top areas remain open via the Chuo Entrance with four lifts operating Joetsu Kokusai - Official snow depth: 50cm - The area in front of the main hotel and the North area remain open. 5 lifts and 6 courses open. • Yuzawa Now: Friday 13th April 2018

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 857cm Posted on Friday 13th April 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The big news this morning is that the GALA Yuzawa resort has announced that they will be open until Sunday 22nd April - rather than the initially planned 6th May. As you might expect, the reason being given is that since March we have had little fresh snow and warmer conditions are affecting snow conditions. So just over one week left at GALA and from Monday 23rd April we will be down to only the Kagura resort being open. It will be interesting to see if Kagura can open as long as initially planned. Anyway, on to the weather and as I write that I can hear some wind making some howling sounds. At the time of writing that does not seem to be an issue with the resorts opening... It is a mostly cloudy start to the day and it definitely feels colder than it has been. Tomorrow should be warmer and we might get to see more sunshine, but rain later on and perhaps into Sunday. Naeba plans to re-open for the weekend. --- Planned resort operations - subject to change GALA Yuzawa - At least part open until Sunday 22nd April (* changed from the initial plan of 6th May) - Official snow depth: 130cm - Central Area: The Gondola, Coach, Barouche, Phaeton lifts operating; all courses remain open - North Area: The Victoria lift operating; Broadway, Swan (part), Super Swan and Super Broadway courses remain open - The South Area and Falcon course back to base are now closed for the season Kandatsu Kogen - At least part open until Sunday 22nd April - Official snow depth: 70cm - Kandatsu Kogen remains part open - The Tozawa pair and Onaka and Ikenodaira quad lifts remain operating Kagura - Tashiro Ropeway plans to be at least part open until Sunday 6th May - Mitsumata Ropeway and the main Kagura area plan to be at least part open until Sunday 27th May - Official snow depth: Kagura area - 250cm; Mitsumata area - 150cm; Tashiro area - 200cm - All areas of Kagura remain generally open and almost all course areas still available - The downhill course back to Mitsumata Ropeway is closed - The Dragondola connecting Tashiro with Naeba is now closed for the season --- Naeba - Naeba is currently closed on weekdays until 27th April - It plans to re-open on Saturdays and Sundays - The resort plans then plans to be (part open) daily from 28th April until 6th May Yuzawa Now 2017-2018 season Data as of Friday 13th April 2018 Total snowfall at base so far 857cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 57 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 60cm (26th January) November 2017 snowfall 14cm reported on 3 days December 2017 snowfall 277cm reported on 16 days January 2018 snowfall 392cm reported on 19 days February 2018 snowfall 162cm reported on 15 days March 2018 snowfall 11cm reported on 3 days April 2018 snowfall 1cm reported on 1 day Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Sunday 6th May 2018

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 857cm Posted on Sunday 6th May 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. A fine day yesterday and it is going to be a fine and rather warm day today with temps due to rise to around mid-20s. From tomorrow, just Kagura will be open and they hope to be able to remain open until 27th May. Here’s how much snowfall we have observed in town over the last six winter seasons: 2017-2018 season: 857cm 2016-2017 season: 954cm 2015-2016 season: 424cm 2014-2015 season: 1303cm 2013-2014 season: 833cm 2012-2013 season: 762cm So just over 8.5m in total for the season. That was not as much as last season, but double what we got during the 2015-2016 season. A respectable number for sure, but it has been a bit surprising just how little snow we got from early March onwards. 845cm of the 857cm total for the season fell by the end of February 2018! (Though please note that there was more snowfall at higher elevations). Hopefully we’ll see a much snowier ‘spring’ season next time around. --- Kagura Tashiro Ropeway plans to be at least part open until Sunday 6th May Mitsumata Ropeway and the main Kagura area plan to be at least part open until Sunday 27th May All courses remain open except - Tashiro Number 1 (upper part closed) - Challenge - Gondola East Course (Tashiro) - Panorama - Taikai - Gezan course (back to Mitsumata car park) - Family Course now can only be used as a connecting course back to Ropeway - You can also ride the Mitsumata Number 1 lift back down to the Ropeway Yuzawa Now 2017-2018 season Data as of Sunday 6th May 2018 Total snowfall at base so far 857cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 57 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 60cm (26th January) November 2017 snowfall 14cm reported on 3 days December 2017 snowfall 277cm reported on 16 days January 2018 snowfall 392cm reported on 19 days February 2018 snowfall 162cm reported on 15 days March 2018 snowfall 11cm reported on 3 days April 2018 snowfall 1cm reported on 1 day May 2018 snowfall 0cm Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa.
