Independent snow and weather reporting from the Madarao region of Nagano New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 0cm Weather overview Fine Wind Light Temperature - Visibility Clear Posted on Monday 13th November 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Hello everyone! And how was your 'green season'? I spent my time all over the place, but I'm happy to now be back in Madarao for the upcoming 2017-2018 season and getting ready to get back into the routine of bring you daily reports during the upcoming season. The autumn months have been beautiful - as always, of course. We have seen a bit of light snow fall. If I am remembering correctly, the first very light snow I had falling here at base was on 30th October, though it didn't end up in any cover at all. Higher mountains in the region have had some snowfall, creating that lovely late autumn-early winter moody look. As you can see from the image below, there's a bit of cover up on the top of Madarao too. It's a beautiful morning this morning. So let's look at the planned opening dates for Madarao Kogen and the connecting Tangram Ski Circus. Madarao Kogen: Saturday 16th December 2017 Tangram Ski Circus: Saturday 16th December 2017 So we have over a month left before the ski lifts start moving. Some ski hills usually try to open as quickly as possible and often miss their opening dates. These two seem to plan for a (perhaps) more realistic opening date and usually hit it. Hopefully by the time they open, there'll be decent snow cover and things can get off to a great start. I'll post more updates over the coming weeks with snow news. Once the ski lifts start operating, this report will be updated daily. Here's to a fantastic 2017-2018 winter season. Hope you spend it with me! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Madarao region of Nagano New snowfall at base 25cm Snowfall at base this season 807cm Weather overview Snow Wind Moderate+ Temperature - Visibility Poor Posted on Tuesday 21st February 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Morning from Madarao. And it's a windy morning here after a windy night (and I almost forgot, wet conditions in the day), but with a good 25+cm of fresh snow on the ground too. I think that's a decent number to report given the wind and that it'll be less/more in places. The wind is actually affecting resort operations with the Super Quad lift currently on hold and the Number 13 lift resting out the day. The Number 2 quad lift looks like it will be opening but has been delayed. Conditions should calm down later on and we're likely to get some sun tomorrow at least for part of the day. Looks like things will be settling down again once this storm passes. It's mad to think that we have just one more week left in February. The winter season flies by way too quickly. Slow down please! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Madarao region of Nagano New snowfall at base 31cm Snowfall at base this season 628cm Weather overview Cloud Wind Slight Temperature - Visibility Fair Posted on Tuesday 31st January 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Yes, this is much much better! The memories of rain of yesterday morning quickly washed away with the sight of a good new layer of fresh snowfall. :) The rain turned into snow in the afternoon and this morning the resort is reporting 30cm of fresh snowfall; my measure gives me 31cm. Enough to give us a good reset for this morning by the looks and I might just need to go and check for myself. Snow clouds still around but right at this moment it has stopped. There's even a bit of sun somehow making it's way through the clouds just now... it looks like it might get brighter and clear a bit. There's more snow forecast to move in by tomorrow night though, but maybe some sunshine before that happens. So it sounds like it should be a good few days. --- A message from SnowJapan Firstly, we would again like to thank everyone who has sent in messages this season regarding our daily reports and website in general. We read them all and appreciate the feedback. And we hope that if you have already visited Japan this season, you timed it well with conditions at your chosen destination. It is perhaps inevitable that some people will compare the daily Now reports from different regions of Japan, and in particularly the observed new snowfall data that is posted on the reports. But if you do that please keep in mind that doing so is not really comparing like-for-like… and it’s certainly not ‘the whole picture’. By comparing the observed snowfall data, essentially you are comparing how much snow is falling at base areas. While we believe that is a very interesting and useful piece of data - and is in fact the only practical first-hand data that could possibly be consistently recorded once a day – it is only one part of the situation. Other important information, including the snowfall that ski resorts themselves might be reporting at higher elevations, can be found within the text of the report when available. That is why we highly recommend that if you really want to get a more complete picture of what is going on in each of the areas covered in our reports, you should go through the individual reports including all the archives. A few other quick points: Each report is written independently from the other reports, by different people. The reports are not ‘connected’ in any way. For one reporter, a temperature of -2C might be described as ‘cold’. For another reporter, on the same day, a temperature of -2C might be described as ‘relatively warm’. For one reporter, 15cm of snowfall overnight might be described as ‘a lot’. For another reporter, on the same day, 15cm of snowfall might be described as less exciting. The person posting Niseko Now is reporting from Niseko, and is not making comparisons with any of the other reports, or considering what is happening elsewhere. (Unless clearly stated of course). The person posting Hakuba Now is reporting from Hakuba, and the same applies. While each report is coming to you from the respective resort base areas, some ski resorts have much more ‘vertical’ than others. Some will experience much more of a difference in the amount of snow that falls at base/village level than falls at higher elevations. And one more very important thing. If the reporters pretended to be overly-excited about conditions even when they are actually sub-par… not only would that be intentionally misleading, but how would you then know when they really were genuinely excited by excellent conditions? Being able to clearly distinguish between varying situations is one of the real advantages of not feeling any need to talk up or sugar-coat conditions. Remember, we’re not a glossy travel brochure selling you holidays and tours. What we are trying to do is to provide our readership with honest, interesting and informative reports. And we will continue to do that. Thank you! Wind NW Temperature - Visibility Limited to poor Posted on Monday 16th January 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . It just keeps on snowing! Hello from Madarao where we're dealing with more (and more) snow. Moving snow may not be everyone's idea of fun but if it means that we're getting impressive amounts of fresh snowfall I am all for it. It's still snowing, the resort is reporting 30cm of fresh (since yesterday evening), I am measuring 42cm since my last report - and snow is forecast through today, heavy at times, and into tomorrow. We may get to enjoy a bit of sunshine mid week but there's more snow appearing on the forecast just before we get to the weekend. Thank you, Nature! The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . More snow. And lots of it. It just keeps on coming. Another foot of snow since the report yesterday and we will be getting more today though it is expected to ease off somewhat as we finally get past this strong winter storm. If the forecasts are correct there should even be clearer skies and sunshine above us tomorrow which should make for perfect conditions in all respects. Don't worry though (not that you are with what we have received this last week!), but after that snow is due to return Friday-Saturday. On a serious note the resort has made a note asking visitors to stay within the resort boundaries at the moment. We've had a really huge amount of snowfall over the last week. Conditions are deep - really, that's not just a marketing word! - and potentially in places extremely dangerous. Poor visibility certainly is not helping either. The resort is doing a fine job working with the snow on the official course areas, and the snow quality is excellent. For the moment at least it is very wise to remain and have your fun in those areas. Looks like the Number 3 lift is resting, taking a break from coping with all the snow perhaps. The Number 13 lift is due to open but may be late.
