With Hanazono and Village ending the season yesterday, we now just have Hirafu and Annupuri operating. Hirafu is operating three lifts - Ace Gondola, King Number 3 and Number 4. Annupuri is also operating three lifts - the gondola, Jumbo Number 1 quad and Jumbo Number 4 pair lifts. They are not telling us what runs/courses remain open, so I can't elaborate further on that. Such details are not important anyway, right? (I must just be really odd wanting to know these things). Unfortunately, both the top lifts appear to be on hold at the start of the day. I'll continue to try and find some words each morning right until the end! Going out on this last day for two of the three remaining resorts—but not to ski, but to look at the early flowers blooming at a castle grounds here in Myoko. The cherries will soon open here at the base of Akakan, too. But it’s a nice day for one last ski, too! I just wonder when Lotte Arai will close. Driving by yesterday, I saw a lot of bare patches there as well, so I’ll update when we get some news. As always, I wonder why many resort websites are so low on useful information that people can use, high on self-promotion.... The latest Myoko Now report can be found here. I wasn’t planning to write every day in this post-regular season, but things keep changing! The official word came down from Akakan yesterday: the season ends on April 12 (although the Myoko Sky Cable gondola will run during the Golden Week holiday at the beginning of May). Going to their website, they have also announced that they are closed today due to strong winds (which are predicted to get even stronger in the afternoon). Lotte Arai has all three of its late-season lifts marked as operating, although the gondola will be running at reduced speed. They are also warning of potential lift closures due to wind. This wind is really going to eat up what snowpack is remaining, helped by really warm temperatures; I wonder if Seki Onsen will be able to open over the weekend, too? They are having a festival with fireworks tomorrow from 7pm, which of course doesn’t require snow.... -- Akakura Kanko: 80cm, 10° (down 20cm in one day!) The latest Myoko Now report can be found here. A couple of interesting things, so time to share some info with you. First is a really steady SW wind that is going to continue to melt the snow really fast. It’s been amazing around the house to see the trees pop up after their horizontal hibernation under the snow. Like I’ve said before, in summer we can hardly believe that there was that much snow out there in all that green stuff; in winter we can’t remember the jungle that the forests are in summer. The other thing was a check on the plowing of the road that runs under Suginohara Ski Area and runs back behind Mt. Myoko. I thought I’d check it out, and maybe take the dog for a hike-up ski on those big, open, wide slopes on the south side of the resort. The road is still barricaded just beyond the town, and there’s not enough snow lower down to hike up. The signs say the road is closed until the end of April, but I wonder how far they’ve actually gotten. This could make it hard for a lot of people who do like to climb on the west side of the mountain (like, maybe hiking up to the snow on dry ground). The latest Myoko Now report can be found here. When there’s two cm of snow on the ground, you have to add a report. Even if the sun’s out now, and the snow is gone. I heard there was more up the hill; we couldn't see much because of some heavy fog on the mountain for most of the day, but snow was involved. Looks like a nice, sunny day out there—good day for a spring ski, or maybe to take in the cherry trees at Takada Castle Park in Joetsu City, just to our north. Congratulations! Today is the first day of last week of operations for the 2025-26 season. Does that make sense? Counting today, the resort will operate for 7 more days. The countdown has begun, and will end on May 6. Conditions haven't materially changed up on the mountain. Only the D lift is operating, with the Ropeway tram whisking you up and down from the base. It's fun, mellow, and very relaxed up there, and you can really work on your face tan! Enjoy. The latest Furano Now report can be found here. Good morning skiers & boarders, Well yesterday was a big blech! Rain, wind, cold, quite miserable. I actually saw a few whiffs of snow falling when I got up this morning, so it appears that a bit fell up on top. Humorously, the resort reports zero, but the ski patrol report says the new snow was covering the bushes, so be careful! Fairly windy, so gonna feel a bit cool. Just checked the conditions up at Asahidake for kicks, and it's -8 C, with a wind speed of 50/km/h! That puts the wind chill at a frosty -19 C! Spring anyone? Gonna be even windier tomorrow, followed by two days of r@!n, finally getting sunny on Sunday. Think fun. It's a cloudy start to the day, a national holiday. Looking a bit further ahead and into the main bit of Golden Week, it appears there's a chance of more rain than we'd like actually.
