Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this seas 805cm Posted on Sunday 8th February 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Morning from Yuzawa. A cold morning with a bit of fresh snow... but not a whole lot. There has been around 5cm in town since yesterday, and probably a bit more than that at higher elevations. (Wouldn't it be great if ski areas told us about it?!) We do have snow forecast through the day today, but as this report is being prepared there are some breaks in the cloud and actually a bit of blue sky and sun breaking through. If anything it has felt like it is clearing up over the last 30 minutes. Anyway, all forecasts insist we should expect snow during the day. And windier conditions later on... It looks like the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa will not be open today. The main Central and Northern Areas remain open as normal. (I can't find any specific reason being offered). Just noticed that Kagura says strong winds are forecast this afternoon and the Tashiro <> Kagura connecting course will close at 1pm, and the Tashiro Ropeway will close at 3pm. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 48cm Snowfall at base this seas 853cm Posted on Monday 9th February 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. After a fine start and some blue sky, the weather had changed by late morning yesterday and we had some heavy snow at times, along with some windy conditions. There has been more snow overnight, with a total of 48cm on our measuring point since yesterday. Very nice. It is still snowing and due to ease off sometime before evening. Unfortunately, wind is an issue again today, and it is affecting a few ski areas: all of Kagura is closed today and GALA Yuzawa is also closed for the day. The Gondola side of Maiko Snow Resort is closed, though the hotel side is planning on being open. Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway may also be affected and possibly some other lifts. Limited visibility out there, so special care is required today for those braving the weather. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Morning from Yuzawa. It has been fine and sunny since early on this morning with just a bit of thin cloud around. It was quite cold early on but starting to warm up a bit now. The snow reported today is from yesterday morning. Tomorrow is going to be back to... precipitation. Hopefully of the snowy kind but some forecasts indicate the chance of some rain during the day. Tomorrow is a national holiday. (Perhaps that explains why some ski areas look busier than usual for a weekday than usual this morning). Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this seas 860cm Posted on Wednesday 11th February 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday we enjoyed a sunny day with clouds gradually gathering later on. We have some (wet) snow falling early on some and there's a dusting kind of layer of snow so far. Unfortunately, pretty much all forecasts are still warning that there's a good chance it will turn to rain in town today; hopefully even if that happens, it will still be snowing at higher elevations. There's not a whole lot of snow potential on forecasts over the next week; rather we still expect a mild bump over the weekend. Ishiuchi Maruyama is having some problems with water supply, with no water currently available in upper areas. They hope to get it fixed up by the weekend. Ski lifts are operating but you need to get back down to use facilities that require water! Today is a national holiday in Japan and so ski areas will very likely be busier than normal for a weekday. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this seas 862cm Posted on Thursday 12th February 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday evening I went out for a walk with an umbrella. It was quite weird. Was it snowing or raining? Sleet didn't feel like the right word. After 5 minutes, the umbrella was really heavy with what can perhaps best be described as a layer of... slush. So, I think it was... slushing?! Hopefully it was snowing at higher elevations! Enough of that and on to today. We start with quite a lot of cloud to the north but it's quite bright and clearer over Yuzawa. Looks like the next 3 or 4 days will generally be clearer and warming up as we head into the weekend. Let's hope the temps don't get too high (and they shouldn't today, at least). Hopefully we can get back to colder conditions and snow next week. The ski area list is posted below but I am too early this morning to bring you updates from most ski areas. Update: a friend up at GALA Yuzawa this morning just told me that the lift staff there were saying there was 15cm of fresh snow. Nice --- definitely sounds much better than slushing! --------------------------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 300cm Notes: The Northern Area connection with Ishiuchi Maruyama and the Southern Area (Ropeway) connection with Yuzawa Kogen are both open Special night skiing is planned for 14th, 21st, 28th March and 4th April ----------------------- Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 260cm Notes: The top connection with the Northern Area of GALA Yuzawa is now open Daily floodlit night skiing until 28th February and then Fridays and Saturdays until 28th March (until 8:00pm) ----------------------- Iwappara Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 180cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 28th March (until 7:00pm on weekdays and Sundays, until 8:00pm on Saturdays and nights before holidays) ----------------------- Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 260cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 22nd March (until 9:00pm) The Atema and Osawa base car parks (and associated runs) are scheduled to be open on weekends only ----------------------- Kagura Official snow depth: Top: 350cm Base: 270cm Notes: Both base Ropeways are open and the Dragondola connection with Naeba is also open ---------------------------- Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 240cm Notes: Floodlit night skiing on Fridays, Saturdays and nights before holidays until 28th March (until 2:00am the next morning) ---------------------------- Maiko Snow Resort Official snow depth: 285cm Notes: The Gondola side is closed today Floodlit night skiing on Saturdays and Sundays until 14th March (until 8:00pm on Saturdays and 7:00pm on Sundays) ---------------------------- Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: Top: 360cm Base: 240cm ---------------------------- Naeba Official snow depth: Top: 250cm Base: 210cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 21st March (until 8:30pm) ---------------------------- NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 255cm ---------------------------- Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: Top: 280cm Base: 160cm Notes: The upper Kogen area and base area are both open The Ropeway connection with the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is now open ---------------------------- Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort Official snow depth: 195cm ---------------------------- Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 200cm Yuzawa Now 2025-2026 season Data as of Thursday 12th February 2026 Total snowfall at base so far 862cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 42 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 68cm (on 25th January) November 2025 snowfall 12cm reported on 1 day December 2025 snowfall 144cm reported on 9 days January 2026 snowfall 595cm reported on 23 days February 2026 snowfall 111cm reported on 9 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Morning from Yuzawa. 1-2cm of (wet) snow again after a generally fine and sunny day yesterday. I'm hearing of various snow conditions yesterday after the rain/slush/snow we got the previous day - generally, it seems to have been a case of better (and actually quite good) snow at higher elevations... as you might expect. As I noted in an update to the report yesterday morning, the lift staff at GALA Yuzawa were saying there was as much as 15cm of fresh snow up there. Hopefully higher elevations might have again received a bit more Early morning we start with largely overcast/cloudy kind of skies, but we expect some more sunshine during the day. So they may clear fairly quickly. Tomorrow and Sunday are still both expected to be unseasonably mild with generally sunny skies. Feel-good, for sure! (Less great when considering snow). The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Fine weather yesterday, particularly in the first half of the morning, with more cloud around in the afternoon. This morning we start with almost clear skies. As expected it will be a sunny morning (perhaps more cloudy this afternoon) and sunny through tomorrow. Light southerly wind and excellent visibility. Expect temps to rise above 10C in town today and tomorrow. It feels like we are getting our first taste of early spring, but of course it is too early for that. Hopefully we have be blessed with more blasts of winter in the coming weeks. Monday should be colder with the chance of some snow. With the sunny weather forecast (and it being mid-February, of course), the popular ski areas will probably be very busy this weekend. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Cloud gathered as the day progressed yesterday, but it remained fairly bright and sunny until late afternoon. The Japan Meteorological Agency recorded a temperature of 9.8C at 1pm. We start this morning with clear blue skies and that is what we expect for the day; along with town warming up to around 12C. This weekend is definitely our first taste of 'spring' this season; and a fair amount of snow will have melted away by the end of today. As much fun as it may be, thankfully tomorrow will be colder, with forecasts ranging from rain to sleet to snow; the higher up you are the better chance of the snowy goodness, of course. Beyond that, later on Wednesday is the best chance for some more snow, but there's not whole lot of snow lined up on forecasts unfortunately. For now, anyway. Have a good Sunday. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday was, as expected, warm. The Japan Meteorological Agency recorded a town level temp of 12C at 2pm. So it felt more like late March than mid-February. After the brightness of yesterday, it's a dull and grey kind of morning with limited visibility... and a bit damp. It is colder (just under 2C) and not expected to warm up during the day, with a chance of rain/sleet/snow during the day. Hopefully we can avoid the rain and get some fresh snow, but I wouldn't expect much. Better chance of snow as you go higher. Tomorrow will be a bit warmer again (though thankfully not as much as this past weekend) and we'll probably get some more sunshine; same for Wednesday during the day, with snow due overnight into Thursday morning. Some forecasts indicate that we might get a decent layer of fresh from that. Can't help but wonder how the rest of February and March will shape up, but probably best not to waste too much time doing so! The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. We've had a kind of a dusting of snow - I can just about justify 1cm for this report. Perhaps more than that at higher elevations. The day starts grey and overcast with some very light snow falling, though forecasts do seem to all be promising clearer skies and sunshine. Probably sometime this morning. Tomorrow should be fine from the get-go, with snow - proper snow - due tomorrow night and into Thursday morning. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It was about 11am before the cloudy skies parted yesterday morning, with some light snow falling in places and limited visibility until then. Blue skies started to appear beyond then, though. And we start this Wednesday morning with beautiful clear blue skies and sunshine. We still expect some snow overnight tonight and let's hope that we can get a decent amount... as there's no snow due at least until early next week beyond tomorrow. Note that there is a chance of strong winds tonight and tomorrow morning; perhaps enough to affect some lifts tomorrow. Sunshine is currently forecast for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. - Yuzawa Now: Thursday 19th February 2026
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 15cm Snowfall at base this seas 880cm Posted on Thursday 19th February 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. After some beautiful clear and sunny skies during the day, we got some 'wet' in the evening, but... This morning it is good to be able to report some fresh snowfall. 15-20cm around town and a bit higher, with a bit less to the north in Minamiuonuma. It looks like this time there has been more snow in the southern areas of the town. It's another of those mornings where it would be really good for ski areas to say how much fresh snow they received overnight, but I cannot find any. Not one. :( I'm guessing there might be a decent fresh layer in higher elevations. The snow may continue this morning but will likely stop sometime during the day. It is currently just under -2C. We expect those several days of generally clearer skies and a fairly warm weekend. Wind might have been a problem today and while it didn't feel particularly bad out there earlier on, Kagura is only going to be opening the Mitsumata Area at the start of the day. The Tashiro Area will be closed and the Kagura Area status is 'postponed'. (Don't bet on it being open). As far as I can tell, all other ski areas are going to be open as scheduled.
