  • Niseko Now: Sunday 26th February 2023

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 19cm Snowfall at base this season 962cm Posted on Sunday 26th February 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. It was windy last night and still quite windy this morning and what feels like changeable conditions this morning. Light snow is falling, though there is some blue sky to see in places, and visibility also looks quite varied at the moment. At 8am I measured just under 20cm snowfall and I note that Hirafu and Hanazono are both reporting up to around 30cm on upper elevations. Very nice. Unfortunately, at the start of operations, wind is affecting some lifts. All of the top lifts are going to be on hold, as is the Annupuri Gondola. Others seem to be opening as planned. Clear and sunny skies are lined up for tomorrow, along with some milder temps. Hopefully less wind too. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -4C, 15cm new snow, poor visibility. Moiwa 800m: -10.3C, W10.0m/s, strong wind and snow, poor visibility, snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: -12.8C, WNW7.6m/s, poor visibility, blizzard. Mizuno no Sawa: -11.5C, NNW5.5m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -12.6C, NE8.3m/s. Hanazono#3: -10.2C, N6.0m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape NNW14m/s, Kamui Cape NNW11m/s, 1020hPa,2.5m waves. Major snowdrift and cornice development due to strong N winds overnight. From observations and fracture tests at 800m, slab like snowdrifts are fracturing easily. The avalanche risk on cornice slopes and knolls is high above the treeline. Peak gates are expected to be closed. Other gates yet to be decided. Please respect the patrol's decision. Conditions are dangerous taking a high traverse from Hanazono Gate 5. The avalanche risk is rising in the Higashi One 3rd Creek area due to continued snow accumulations from the N winds. Also out of Moiwa Gate 6 today, conditions require care. Unstable snowdrifts are continuing to grow. Do not traverse from Annupuri Gondola Gate 8 to the center ridge cornice slope. Accidents have occurred in the past under similar conditions. Do not duck ropes. One set of tracks will lead others to follow, increasing the chances of an accident. Best not to stray too far from the ski runs today. Beware getting lost in poor visibility. Carry a beacon. Have a good day. --------------- Ski area information for Sunday 26th February 2023 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. • Niseko Now: Thursday 23rd February 2023

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 20cm Snowfall at base this season 927cm Posted on Thursday 23rd February 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here This morning I have a few mm over 20cm of snow to report, which is a very nice thing to be able to report on this national holiday (Emperor's Birthday). Expect more at higher elevations. It is a bit warmer this morning actually. Some forecast tell us that there is a chance of some spots of rain later on in lower areas and town (boooo), but hopefully it will be snow at higher elevations (hurray). Whichever, neither seem set to be heavy. Tomorrow might also be on the milder side with colder temps due for Saturday. For the moment, it is snowing. Niseko Annupuri have started to seemingly not update their new snowfall numbers again, so I'm on the verge of taking that out of the report like I did with Niseko Village. It's kind of frustrating, for sure. I am not arguing over specific numbers. (I know very well what a minefield that is!) It's the 'not updating' thing. But beyond that minor frustration: fresh snow, yey! --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -4C, 20cm snowfall, calm. Moiwa 800m: -4.9C, SSW0.9m/s, 25cm snowfall, snowdrifts developing. Annupuri 1100m: -7.1C, W6.0m/s, 30cm snowfall, snowdrift developing. Mizuno no Sawa: -4.9C, W2.9m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -7.1C, S1.4m/s. Hanazono#3: -4.4C, ESE1.9m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape SSE4m/s, Kamui cape SW9m/s, 1018hPa, 1.5m waves. Wind has come down in the morning, 25cm new snow slopes at 800m elevation, tree runs are reset. Westerly wind and snow continued throughout the night mainly around 22:00, 70cm snowdrift development in the last 12 hours on the slopes at 800m elevation. From the observation and weather data, the avalanche risk on the slopes under the 1000m elevation is low. 50cm snowdrift development on the slopes at 1200m elevation in the Kozan no Sawa sidewalls due to the storm during the night, though the avalanche risk is starting to stabilize, still remains high in the morning. Wind and snow will temporarily intensify as the cold front passes at 10am. The avalanche risk increases as the slab formation develops in the strong wind. Do not stay in the gully when the storm begins. Avalanche is a natural phenomenon but it becomes an accident when a person gets caught in it. Most accidents occur during the storm. NIDE’s observation ends today. The purpose of these tests is to study the structural vulnerability of snowdrifts and its changes. We believe that the scientific clarification of this phenomenon will be useful in preventing future accidents. We are grateful to the many people who have proved with their own experience that avalanches do not occur on slopes with stable snowdrifts, even if they jump off the cornices or knolls. All the gates will be open. Have a good day. --------------- Ski area information for Thursday 23rd February 2023 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. • Niseko Now: Saturday 17th December 2022

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 21cm Snowfall at base this season 226cm Posted on Saturday 17th December 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. I'm a bit later than usual this morning. No, I haven't been chomping on toast. Instead, there is much to check this morning and lots of information to update. More ski lifts and runs are open from this morning across the mountain. Basically, most areas are now open - apart from those top lifts and associated runs. I won't go through the details here; please check the lists below to see those. Floodlit night skiing also starts today, and I have noted which lifts operate below. It's called 'night skiing', but the lifts close at a relatively early 7:00pm or 7:30pm. I remember the days (quite a while ago) when night skiing was until 9:30pm. I'm pretty sure I remember that correctly. I am curious as to the reasons for such a change. Silly me, I almost forgot! I have measured another 20+ cm of lovely snowfall since yesterday. There should be some fine conditions to enjoy this morning. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 6am: -8℃, light winds, 30cm snow in last 12hrs, good visibility. Moiwa 700m: -9℃, light winds, 40cm snow in last 12hrs, some snowdrift development. Annupuri 1000m: -13℃, heavy snowfall, poor visibility, 40cm snow in last 12hrs, snowdrift development. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: WNW 10 m/s. Kamui Cape: WSW 11m/s, 1018 hPa, wave 2.5m. The isobars have started to move apart and snowdrift development has slowed. Snowfall has increased, changing from heavy wind crushed crystals to light crystals. Snowdrifts have started to stabilise near the treeline at 800m, however stabilisation at 1000m on SE slopes is delayed and the avalanche risk will continue. Stay off steep slopes at 1000m and creek sidewalls this morning. Beware large scale surface avalanches triggered by rider stimulation. The snow in the trees is good, be careful hitting trees though. Do not duck ropes. One set of tracks will lead others to follow, increasing the chance of an accident. Watch for sudden weather changes. Have a good day. --------------- Individual ski area information for Saturday 17th December 2022 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. • Niseko Now: Monday 8th December 2025

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 72cm It is snowing lightly at the moment after starting earlier on and leaving us with something of a dusting. I can just about justify the 1cm in my report this morning, and hope that there will be more to report tomorrow morning. Hopefully it will be more of the fluffy variety, too, along with colder conditions. The 8cm of fresh snowfall reported by Hirafu at base this morning is... how should I phrase it... interesting. As is the jolly impressive 45cm (!) of 24h fresh snowfall at base that Niseko Village is showing on the official United site. (Yeah, that one is clearly a mistake. I'm guessing it's the snow depth). Come on, guys. Anyway, we patiently wait for precious gifts from the skies and a dose of excite. ------------------------------------ Here's something I posted a few years ago about the name of Niseko Tokyu Grand Hirafu ski area. As someone asked a related question recently, I thought I'd repost it: The ski area opened as Niseko Hirafu in 1961. It changed its name to Niseko Kokusai Hirafu in 1970. Kokusai means ‘international’. There were quite a few ski areas in Japan using that word in their name. Ironically, that was back when skiing in Japan was far from being 'international'. In 2004, the ski area's name was changed to Niseko Mountain Resort Grand Hirafu. And in 2021, it officially changed to its current name, Niseko Tokyu Grand Hirafu. Omoshiroi! By the way, Tokyu comes from the name of the company that owns and operates the ski area. That company has also had various name changes but always included the 'Tokyu' bit. The current company name is 'Tokyu Resorts & Stays'. But they also have 'Tokyu Snow Resorts' on their website. Let's try not to be confused! ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 6am: +2℃, 30cm snowpack. Moiwa Mikaeri 800m: -7℃, SE1.5m/s, snowing and bad visibility. Hanazono 800m: -1.4℃, N3.0m/s (NE23m/s gusts at midnight). Coastal weather: Benkei cape NNW5m/s, Kamui cape SW7m/s, 1012hPa, 1.1m waves. No snowfall until predawn, but started to fall around 6am as the next Low Pressure approaches. The Cold Front will pass in the afternoon and the weather is forecasted to deteriorate. The snowpack remains shallow and the slopes are not suitable for skiing except the groomed runs. Patience is required. Depth hoar is developing with the recent large temperature swing. This is quite unusual for early Winter in Niseko and can potentially be a trigger layer for glide avalanches. Caution is required in steep slopes on the course-sides and/or with bamboo-grass. Surface slab avalanches, which are the cause of most accidents, mostly occur during snowstorms or other bad weather conditions. Leeward slopes with heavy snowdrift deposits should be avoided during strong winds and snowfalls. Weak bonding within the newly formed slabs can easily fail and trigger a slide. Have a nice day. ------------------------------------ Niseko HANAZONO Resort Official 24 hours snowfall (reported by the ski area): Peak: 4cm Base: 1cm Official snow depth (reported by the ski area): Peak: 85cm (no change since yesterday) Base: 25cm (-13cm change since yesterday) Planned lift operations: All four lifts Planned open courses: Mango Salad Silver Dream Juicy Fruit Parallel Yotei Sunset ------------------ Niseko Tokyu Grand Hirafu Official 24 hours snowfall (reported by the ski area): Peak: 8cm Base: 8cm (really?) The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Hello Skiers & Boarders, I don't know what the conditions are up on top, but down in town the sidewalks are treacherous as heck with the recent melt/re-freeze. Sigh...December. It's also the scariest month for driving, hands down. Once things properly freeze up, the ice on the roads and sidewalks becomes much grippier. I endure December. Its main redeeming feature, besides Christmas, is that it's the gateway to January. The weather report expects a good chunk of snow this afternoon, so that should be entertaining. Think snow. --- Ropeway & Lift D 8:30 -- 15:00 *A2 is open all the way to the base. **The Furano Quad has been repaired and will open per normal schedule later this month.** Furano Now 2025-2026 season Data as of Monday 8th December 2025 Total snowfall at base 115cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 11 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 30cm (6th December) November 2025 snowfall 45cm reported on 5 days December 2025 snowfall 70cm reported on 6 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Furano. Here are the final snowfall numbers for the season and previous seasons – as observed by me, at base, here in Hirafu: 2021-2022 season: 1137cm 2020-2021 season: 1210cm 2019-2020 season: 728cm 2018-2019 season: 951cm 2017-2018 season: 1260cm 2016-2017 season: 686cm 2015-2016 season: 989cm 2014-2015 season: 1144cm 2013-2014 season: 1163cm 2012-2013 season: 1491cm We didn't get quite as much snow as last season, but it was still an impressive turn out and consistent too. I reported snowfall (at base) on 99 days – and on 30 of the 31 reports in January! No complaints with the snow. All sorts of interesting snowfall data can be found within this report section, so please do take a look around. Of course, 2021-2022 was another season without the inbound visitors, and it has once again been strangely quiet. While the snow is obviously super important, I have noticed that the people (and the atmosphere they bring) certainly add a special extra aspect to the experience. I look forward to seeing some familiar faces again soon. I'm not sure how some smaller businesses would cope with yet another year of the same. We can only hope that we are not faced with that prospect. There's nothing to report to you regarding Japanese international border restrictions. All we can do is wait and keep fingers crossed for changes that will allow people to come next winter over the next six months. This is the third time I have signed off the season hoping for a 'return to normal'. The thinking and policies regarding the covid situation seem to be improving around the world and things do feel different from this time last year. Still, other things are going on in the world right now that feel far from normal. Let's normal, please! I hope you enjoyed following the reports this year. It has been a pleasure to bring them to you, with the help of the fine guys at SnowJapan. If you so wish, you can send me a ‘hello’ using the SnowJapan contact form (Niseko Now related comments are sent on to me). It might not be possible to reply to them all personally, but I do read them and appreciate comments. Anyway, it's now time for me to fill up on toast and prepare for my prolonged period of summer hibernation. Thank you, take care, peace to all, and see you in November. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 9cm Snowfall at base this season 1054cm Posted on Monday 28th February 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. Not quite 10cm of snow from my measurement this morning. Unfortunately the top lifts at all four ski areas are on hold at the start of the day, as well as the gondola at Annupuri. Pesky winds indeed. All other lifts currently planning to be open as scheduled. Visibility is varied and actually quite poor just at the moment over at Hirafu. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -3℃, 10cm new snow, moderate westerly, snow storm, poor visibility. Moiwa 800m: -6.2℃, WNW11.9m/s, 15cm new snow, 100cm cornice development, 60cm snow drift development. Annupuri 1150m: -9.5℃, WNW11m/s, gusts to 20m/s, new snow blown off and wind crust developing. Hirafu 1250m: -13℃,W15m/s,new snow blown off, blizzard. Coastal data- Benkei cape: WNW14m/s, Kamui cape: WNW8m/s, 1010hPa, 1.7m waves. The isobars are close together, the seas are stormy with an increasing swell and the mountains are in blizzard conditions with cornice and snowdrift development above 800m. East facing cornice slopes are accumulating snow with high avalanche risk on 30deg slopes. At the moment snowdrift development(hard slabs) is shallow, however development is rapidly increasing and there is the risk of drifts fracturing on weak layers with little stimulation. Peak gates will be closed. Please respect the patrol's decision. Do not duck ropes. Riding in the trees is recommended today. Visibility is limited, be careful of crashing into trees and other obstacles. It feels cold today, beware hypothermia and frostbite. Its not spring yet. ----- Planned ski area operations: Monday 28th February 2022 The below snow depth and snowfall data is manually checked each morning from official sources. • Niseko Now: Sunday 27th February 2022

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 3cm Snowfall at base this season 1045cm Posted on Sunday 27th February 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Well, like with most of Japan I believe, yesterday was a mild day with temps rising. There's a small amount of snow this morning and it's definitely a bit on the wet side. Good to see it though because I believe there was some rain leading up to it. Yuck! (Though I am happy not to have mentioned that word this season much). I am guessing that conditions will probably be variable out there, and perhaps a bit slower than normal. Good for the thigh muscles, if you like that kind of thing. All lifts opening as planned this morning. I'm going to have some toast and coffee now. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: 0℃, 10cm wet snow, light winds. Moiwa 800m: -3.8℃, NNW1.9m/s, 10cm wet snow, minor snowdrift development, foggy, poor visibility. Annupuri 1150m: -6.3℃, NNW2.2m/s, 10cm new snow, good visibility above sea of clouds. Hirafu 1250m: -6℃, light west winds to dawn, poor visibility, trace new snow. Hirafu 1000m: -5.6℃, NNE0.3m/s, 10cm new snow. Coastal data- Benkei cape: W5m/s, Kamui cape: NW6m/s, 1004hPa, 1.3m waves. There is a low pressure front off Ishikawa pref, the pressure gradient is shallow, the seas and mountains are calm. The influence of cold air on yesterday's warm air has caused low level cloud to 1000m, clear above, foggy below. Overnight a little snow fell with some minor snow drift development. The general avalanche risk is low, however shallow avalanches are likely to occur on open 30deg slopes above 1100m due to a Feb 26 layer formed by a temperature gradient. All gates are expected to be open. Below 700m conditions are foggy with 15cm new wet snow, visibility should improve after 9am. Be careful hitting trees, falling into cracks. Beware opened creeks, the water is cold and you will need ropes and some help to get out. A helmet and beacon are recommended. A helmet to prevent a fatal injury, a beacon to save your friend. Make sure your airbag works too. Side country is back country, no difference and the same dangers. Be careful. ----- Planned ski area operations: Sunday 27th February 2022 The below snow depth and snowfall data is manually checked each morning from official sources. • Niseko Now: Saturday 26th February 2022

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 1042cm Posted on Saturday 26th February 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It's a beautiful morning in the region. Hardly any cloud at all over towards Mt Yotei, just a little around the side of the mountain, and some around our mountains. Perhaps they will clear as the morning progresses. The snow in my report is left overs from after my report yesterday. It clearly feels milder this morning and is currently -2C at base. We are expecting that to rise though and maybe even up to around +5C during the day. That's toasty! Tomorrow should be less toasty. It's the weekend again and so the Holiday Number 1 pair at Niseko Grand Hirafu and the Jumbo Number 3 pair at Niseko Annupuri are also up and running. All lifts appear to be opening as planned at the start of the day. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -6℃, no new snow, sunny. Moiwa 800m: -4.2℃, SW1.4m/s, no new snow, good visibility, sunny. Annupuri 1150m: -7.4℃, WSW8.1m/s, no new snow, cloud speed fast. Hirafu Peak: -6℃, W8m/s. Hirafu 1000m: -6.9℃, S8.4m/s, no new snow, good visibility. Coastal data- Benkei cape: WSW7m/s, Kamui cape: SW19m/s, 1009hPa, 1.5m waves. The snow has stopped and the sun is out. Light winds at the mountain base however above 1000m a strong WSW wind is blowing. New cornice development in this wind will easily collapse, take care. No new snow overnight, from observation and data the general avalanche risk is low. On high elevation wind effected slopes like the upper Kozan no Sawa sidewall, a hard crust has developed and if stimulated a flying carpet type avalanche could easily occur. Be careful. Peak gates are expected to be open. Please listen to the patrols advice and prepare before exiting the gates. Yesterday's tracks can still be seen off the groomers, but the snow is still good. Entry to Haru no Taki and Yu no Sawa is strictly prohibited. The sun and rising temperatures today and tomorrow on these south facing slopes will increase the risk of a large scale avalanches. Please respect Niseko Rules. Groomers are epic today. Be careful crashing and hitting something. To help avoid a fatal accident, wear a helmet and use a beacon. We are sick of the new snow for a while. Enjoy the sun and have a good weekend. ----- Planned ski area operations: Saturday 26th February 2022 The below snow depth and snowfall data is manually checked each morning from official sources. • Niseko Now: Friday 25th February 2022

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 17cm Snowfall at base this season 1041cm Posted on Friday 25th February 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Hello and good morning from Niseko. I have more snowfall to report this morning... almost 20cm of it. That's over 20cm average every day over the last six reports here at base. Nice. Hirafu is this morning reporting 30cm. It continues with light snowfall (actually started to be a bit heavier these last few minutes) and visibility seems ok, though will be more limited in some areas. Looks like pesky wind is affecting those top lifts again at the start of the day. Naughty wind. Is that a bit rain on some forecasts for tomorrow? I certainly don't want to believe that! Certainly looks like it will be somewhat milder tomorrow, positively warm in the big picture. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -4℃, light wind, 8cm snowfall in the last 12hrs. Moiwa 800m: -7℃, WNW11.3m/s, wind and snow. Annupuri 1150m: -9.8℃, WNW11.2m/s, wind and snow. Hirafu 1000m: -9.5℃, ESE2.9m/s, snow. Coastal data- Benkei cape: NNW13m/s, Kamui cape: NW11m/s, 1010hPa, 1.4m waves. The atmospheric pressure pattern hasn't changed, still light snow at the base and stormy up top, the snow pack is increasing. It just keeps snowing, like rainy season in south asia. W10-13m/s winds continue on the seas with a below 2m wave. From observation and data the avalanche risk above 1000m is somewhat high. There is the possibility of rider triggered soft slab avalanche in locations like kozan no sawa where snowdrifts have been increasing due to the westerly winds. Be careful on steep slopes with bumps and wind crests. The number of cracks is increasing, if you fall into one you may not be able to get out by yourself. Avoid riding alone. Gate openings yet to be decided. Please respect the patrols decisions. The snow is still good. Lets hope we have no accidents today. ----- Planned ski area operations: Friday 25th February 2022 The below snow depth and snowfall data is manually checked each morning from official sources. • Niseko Now: Thursday 24th February 2022

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 15cm Snowfall at base this season 1024cm Posted on Thursday 24th February 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here This morning I have just measured 15cm of new snowfall since my last report. It is currently -4C and probably won't get much higher than that. Milder conditions are forecast over the coming days though, particularly on Saturday. Visibility is varied, but as I write this it looks pretty limited at the Hirafu base. Snow conditions should be excellent. (Unfortunately, it looks like the top lifts are going to start the day on hold). ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -5℃, calm, 15cm snowfall in the last 12hrs, no snowdrift development, good visibility. Moiwa800m: -8.1℃, WNW8.4m/s, light snowstorm, good visibility, snowdrift development has eased. Annupuri 1150m: -11.3℃, WNW8.2m/s, light snowstorm, good visibility, 20cm snowfall. Hirafu Peak: -13℃, light NW snow wind, minor snowdrift development. Hanazono 1000: -10.8℃, ENE3.1m/s, 20cm snowfall, snowdrift development has eased. Coastal data- Benkei cape: NW14m/s, Kamui cape: WSW10m/s, 1013hPa, 1.3m waves. The isobars are moving apart and it seems the storm has passed. Snowdrift and cornice development has been massive over the last 72hrs, however they are starting to stabilise now. Peak gate openings yet to be decided, please respect the patrols decisions. Even if the gates open, avoid riding open cornice slopes and knolls above 800m, the avalanche risk continues. Avoid valley bottoms, this is where the avalanches run. This information is published for the safety of out of bounds resort riders. If one person ducks the ropes, others will follow, increasing the chances of an accident. Obey Niseko Rules. Today the mountain is a powder paradise. Take care not to fall into cracks. Beware a sudden weather change. Is your beacon on? Special thanks to all mountain staff who looked after the mountain during the storm. Our daily reports are not posted on behalf of ski areas or any other business or organisation. Since first going online in 1999, the integrity of this website has always been our top priority, and it is something we are not prepared to compromise. All content is carefully created and written by humans who share a passion for the subject and what SnowJapan stands for. About SnowJapan.com About the daily reporting on SnowJapan.com
