Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 6cm Snowfall at base this season 841cm Posted on Tuesday 5th March 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. It's a mostly overcast kind of morning, but it is quite bright. It might snow lightly; it might get to be a bit sunny. There doesn't seem to be much forecast snow on the weekly outlook just now (significant amounts, anyway). Keeping cold will be good! ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 6am: -6℃, 5cm snowfall in 12h, calm. Moiwa 800m: -8.7℃, NNW8.5m/s, 1cm snowfall with snowdrifts. Mikaeri 764m: -8.9℃, NW3.1m/s. Annupuri 1100m: -12.2℃, WNW9.9m/s. Village 1000m: -10.7℃, NW5.3m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -11.4℃, NNW3.7m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape NNW13m/s, Kamui cape WNW9m/s, 1020hPa, 1.3m waves. The isobars have spread out, however the wind remains strong in higher elevations. Cold air is keeps flowing in. The new snowdrift slabs are starting to stabilise, however are still unstable in slopes around 1000m elevation. Peak gates are scheduled to open. Follow the ski patrol’s instructions. Kozan no Sawa (Backbowl) and O-sawa (Annupuri Bowl) should be avoided all day today. The avalanche risk remains high in those areas. Avalanches are natural phenomena and are not an accident unless somebody gets caught in one. Do not stay put at the bottom of a slope. Do not carelessly stimulate knolls. You might trigger a slide and somebody may be caught in it. A snowpack generated by a storm (strong wind) is structurally denser and less stable than one by a calm snowfall. And those snowpacks are generally the cause of an avalanche accident in Niseko. This is the reasoning behind the gates opening/closing in Niseko. Winter mountains are inherently dangerous. Avalanches do not occur from new snow piled up on frozen snow. It is more important to pay attention to “how” the snow fell. Many accidents are being reported throughout Japan. Unfortunately, the deceased will never return. We would like to send our warmest condolences. ------------------ Individual ski area information for Tuesday 5th March 2024 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 14cm Snowfall at base this season 679cm Posted on Thursday 1st February 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. We start February with noticeably colder conditions and a nice layer of fresh snow, hurray! I have measured 11cm and it is coming down nicely now, but that means that visibility is limited at base. I'm looking forward to being able to report further snow tomorrow. It looks like the top lifts are going to be challenged by wind on the mountain this morning - they are not opening at normal time. Annupuri gondola on hold, too. And now for something completely different. ----------------------------- A look back at the season so far: until end of January 2024 I know it’s a cliché but, seriously… it’s February, already?! Time flies when you’re having fun, etc. As always, the numbers I am introducing in this report are all the snowfall measurements I have observed near the base of Hirafu. The numbers within my reports are all comparable (year-on-year) because they have come from the same spot every day over the last 12 seasons. This is how much snowfall I have measured during the month of January over the years. January 2024: 298cm January 2023: 332cm January 2022: 325cm January 2021: 387cm January 2020: 224cm January 2019: 285cm January 2018: 305cm January 2017: 152cm January 2016: 303cm January 2015: 257cm January 2014: 461cm January 2013: 443cm I was able to report snowfall reported on 24 days in January 2024 and on 59 days so far this season. The big headline of the month was surely the whopping 62cm that I reported on 8th January. That is the most that I have ever measured in one report. In the end, though, I measured less snowfall in January 2024 than I was able to in the previous three seasons, and it was also less than my average (314cm). Not by much, so nothing major. And the first half of the month was clearly snowier than the second half of the month. Still, in what is being described as a 暖冬 (warm winter) in Japan, I think we have done really well. I don’t know the details of other parts of Hokkaido, but I get the impression that up here we have had a much better time of it than many regions of Japan. Some regions in western Japan have really been struggling and other normally very snowy regions in central Japan are experiencing much less snowfall than normal/average. (I wonder does the ‘normal/average’ comparison number get adjusted every year?) Next up are the totals for the 2023-2024 winter season so far. The following is how much snowfall I have observed up until the end of January: 2023/2024 season up to end of January 2024: 665cm 2022/2023 season up to end of January 2023: 685cm 2021/2022 season up to end of January 2021: 717cm 2020/2021 season up to end of January 2020: 797cm 2019/2020 season up to end of January 2019: 516cm 2018/2019 season up to end of January 2018: 702cm 2017/2018 season up to end of January 2017: 899cm 2016/2017 season up to end of January 2016: 443cm 2015/2016 season up to end of January 2015: 608cm 2014/2015 season up to end of January 2014: 806cm 2013/2014 season up to end of January 2013: 859cm 2012/2013 season up to end of January 2012: 979cm The average over the last 12 seasons has been 723cm. Here is how much of the total snowfall for the whole season we have already had received by the end of January in previous seasons, which might give us an idea of what to normally expect for the rest of the season: By the end of January 2023, as a % of the season total: about 68% By the end of January 2022, as a % of the season total: about 63% By the end of January 2021, as a % of the season total: about 66% By the end of January 2020, as a % of the season total: about 71% By the end of January 2019, as a % of the season total: about 74% By the end of January 2018, as a % of the season total: about 71% By the end of January 2017, as a % of the season total: about 65% By the end of January 2016, as a % of the season total: about 61% By the end of January 2015, as a % of the season total: about 70% By the end of January 2014, as a % of the season total: about 74% By the end of January 2013, as a % of the season total: about 66% So, in recent years, by the end of January we have already received between two-thirds and three-quarters of the total snowfall for the season as a whole. (At base). Let’s look forward to what we might expect in February. Here’s how much snowfall I have recorded during previous seasons in that month. (The numbers in brackets show the total observed snowfall in each season by the end of February.) February 2023: 289cm (974cm) February 2022: 337cm (1054cm) February 2021: 325cm (1122cm) February 2020: 143cm (659cm) February 2019: 198cm (900cm) February 2018: 299cm (1198cm) February 2017: 160cm (603cm) February 2016: 266cm (874cm) February 2015: 196cm (1002cm) February 2014: 178cm (1037cm) February 2013: 316cm (1295cm) Make of all this what you will! Some thoughts at the end of January It's peak season, and Niseko is busy and in full swing. Niseko has also seemingly been getting attention in the Japanese national media. I often watch the evening news on TV in Japan. In the last few weeks, I have seen two national shows doing extended pieces about Niseko. I think I was even stopped in the street for an interview by one of them early in the New Year, but I politely refused. (I'm really shy). Both mentioned that visitors to Niseko ski areas are now '90% foreign' (said in a factual way, not a derogatory way) and that for many Japanese visitors, it now almost feels like going abroad in terms of people, environment (buildings and signs) and prices (very high). Both amusingly mentioned some place offering curry rice costing 2,400 yen, which is indeed double or more than what is expected in Japan. (It was fairly oishii, apparently). Both also mentioned super posh expensive accommodation costing (cue Dr Evil voice) 500 MILLION DOLLARS, but even so, it was full/sold out. I don't know if these numbers are correct, but apparently, there were 550 'accommodations' (definition unclear) in 2019, and there are 840 now. One tended to concentrate on the fun things, like how everyone seemed to be having fun, the super snow that got everyone wanting to be here in the first place, and an 'international atmosphere'. Also, it was a good chance for some young Japanese people to get a well-paid (more than in central Tokyo) part-time job and practice English at the same time, etc. It really liked the Food Trucks Village 'Eat the Street in Niseko' kitchen cars area that they have going until 24th February. Side note: I think there should be a kitchen car specialising in toast. That would almost certainly be the most popular one. The other one took a bit of a darker tone and introduced the phrase 'Niseko bubble', referencing the Japanese bubble economy in the 1980s. Clearly, that particular bubble didn't go too well in the early 90s – spoiler: it burst – and it wasn't clear if they were just being dramatic about fast economic growth or suggesting that it might not last. They got a few Japanese skiers who hadn't been to Niseko for 30 years to come and experience it again. They were pretty shocked at the changes (as you would be after 30 years) and lamented about feeling out of place and that everything was unrealistically expensive. It then quickly went to a bunch of foreign skiers, opining that Niseko is not expensive. The point being made (I think) was that Niseko is pricing out many Japanese skiers, and that feels really strange. I have mentioned before in these reports that I have some Japanese friends who have decided to ski in other places this year due to Niseko's expenses, so that is definitely a thing. I doubt the people making all the money care about that kind of thing, though. I can't see any end to any 'bubble'. Covid was definitely an obstacle for a few years, but it is now seemingly all but forgotten. Things have bounced back quickly, bigger and louder, and I can't see anything other than that trend continuing for now. And like I said before, if the prices charged here now put you off, pretty much everywhere else is cheaper (and, in many cases, way cheaper). You might even get to meet some Japanese people, too! I'm just kidding. (There are a few Japanese people here). ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base at 6am: -7C, 10cm snowfall. Moiwa 800m: -17.6C NW8.6m/s, 20m/s at 5am. Annupuri 1100m: -15.4C, WNW7.6m/s, 20m/s at 6am. Village 1000m: -14.3C, WNW 6m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -14.2C, WNW3.3m/s. Hanazono#3: -12.5C, NNW4.5m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape NW18m/s, Kamui cape W16m/s, 1013hPa, 2.5m waves. The wintery distribution has brought snow at the foot of the mountains. Strong cold air inflow and westerly snowstorm on the slopes over 700m elevation. Cornices and snowdrifts have developed on the slopes over the 800m elevation due to the strong north westerly wind overnight. Waves in the sea are getting higher. From the observation at 5am, weather data, and patrols’ and groomer operators’ reports, the avalanche risks at the cornice slopes at the Annupuri Osawa, Kozan no Sawa side walls, and Nishi-one(west ridge) at 1000m elevation, and Mikaeri bowl will increase. Most of the peak gates will be closed. Please listen to the patrol's instructions. Do not duck ropes to enter the strictly off-limits area such as Haru-no-taki. Dangerous. Over 1000 people have hiked up the peak yesterday but no accident has been reported. We are grateful for your cooperation to ride cautiously. Today is different from yesterday. As the snowstorm intensifies the avalanche risk increases as the snowdrifts will easily break. Also be cautious if you go to the mountains around the Niseko resorts. Snow is good in the tree runs. Beware of crashing into trees. You cannot beat trees. Have you switched your beacon on? Beware of frostbites. Have a good day. ------------------ Individual ski area information for Thursday 1st February 2024 Niseko Tokyu Grand Hirafu Official 24 hours snowfall (reported by the ski area): - Peak: 10cm - Base: 10cm Official snow depth (reported by the ski area): - Peak: 310cm (+10cm since yesterday) - Base: 120cm (+10cm since yesterday) Lifts (scheduled): - All lifts apart from King Number 1 pair and King Number 2 quad (normal operations) - The Ace Family quad, Ace Number 2 quad (Center Four), Hirafu Gondola and Holiday Number 1 pair lifts are scheduled to be open until 7:00pm ------------------ Niseko HANAZONO Resort Official 24 hours snowfall (reported by the ski area): - Peak: 15cm - Base: 20cm Official snow depth (reported by the ski area): - Peak: 250cm (+15cm since yesterday) - Base: 195cm (+17cm since yesterday) Lifts (scheduled): - All lifts - The Hanazono Symphony Gondola is scheduled to be open until 7:00pm ------------------ Niseko Annupuri Kokusai Official snow depth (reported by the ski area): - Peak: 210cm (no change since yesterday) - Base: 180cm (no change since yesterday) Lifts (scheduled): - All lifts - The Jumbo Number 1 quad lift is scheduled to be open until 7:30pm ------------------ Niseko Village Ski Resort Official snow depth (reported by the ski area): - Peak: 246cm (+6cm since yesterday) - Base: 163cm (+3cm since yesterday) Lifts (scheduled): - All lifts apart from Country Road - The Upper Village Gondola, Village Express and Banzai Chair are scheduled to be open until 7:00pm ------------------ Niseko Moiwa Ski Resort Lifts (scheduled): - All lifts ------------------ Floodlit night skiing is planned daily until Wednesday 20th March 2024. • Niseko Now: Wednesday 27th December 2023

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 15cm Snowfall at base this season 356cm Posted on Wednesday 27th December 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Hello and good morning from Niseko. You want some more fresh snow? Well, this morning I have another 15cm of it to report this morning from base. Hirafu is reporting 30cm of new snowfall at peak which sounds good (but, er, 0cm at base. Doh!) I am liking the consistency we have enjoyed over the last 10 days or so. May it continue... as we still need more! Forecasts seem to be indicating that it might tail off, though, for the last few days of the year. I don't yet have any news to report regarding the opening of top lifts and gates. When I know, I'll let you know! It is snowing and visibility looks varied at the start of the day. And that's about it for today, really. See you tomorrow! ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 7am: -6.5C, 15cm snowfall in 12h, 40cm snowdrifts. Mikaeri 764m: -9C, westerly 10m/s, snowdrifts development and 220cm snowpack. Annupuri1000m: -10C, strong westerly wind making wind affected snowdrifts grow 30cm on average, up to 100cm in some spots. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -12.1C, WSW3.8m/s, 25m/s, at 10pm. Hanazono#3: -9.5C, NNW6.3m/s (up to 15m/s). Coastal data: Benkei cape NNW14m/s, Kamui cape W11m/s, 1021hPa, 2.1m waves. Strong wintery pressure distribution with tight isobars spacing. Snowdrifts are largely growing, up to 100cm, in the western aspects above 800m elevation. Cornices are also developing. The avalanche risk is very high in Kozan no Sawa (Backbowl) high elevation leeward sidewalls (1100-1200m). Better not try to approach these slopes from Goshiki side. The snow in the trees is slightly firm dur to the wind and fun to ski. However, bushes are still thick at the bottom of the gullies and is very difficult to come out of there. Highly recommended to remain inbounds and not duck ropes into the side country area. The snow in the western side of the mountain is wind affected and dense. Ski carefully. The snow is lighter and good in the eastern (Hirafu/Hanazono) side. We’re anticipating the opening of gates on New Year’s day. Please help us make it happen by respecting the Niseko Rules. Visibility is intermittently going bad. The new snow on the course side is catchy, be careful. This information is issued based on the reports from the ski patrollers, the cat operators and the institute. Have a good day. ------------------ Individual ski area information for Wednesday 27th December 2023 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. • Niseko Now: Wednesday 3rd May 2023

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 1006cm Posted on Wednesday 3rd May 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Looking out of the window it seems like it is a fine day. There's a fair amount of cloud in some directions, but lots of blue sky and sunshine too. Felt rather warm and a bit windy when I was just out a little while ago. Hopefully tomorrow will be fine too, though forecasts are showing the chance of some rain around Saturday. Today is the last day of the season at Niseko Annupuri ski area. Niseko Grand Hirafu ski area appears intent on keeping open until the original planned closing date (Sunday), the last day of the Golden Week holidays. For many in Japan, today is the first of five consecutive holidays. Today is Constitution Day (Kenpo kinenbi), tomorrow is Greenery Day (Midori no hi) and Friday is Children's Day (Kodomo no hi). And then it is the weekend, of course. By the way, sorry for the late report today. The reason? I totally overslept. Until 11:30am (!) That is very unlike me and I was quite shocked when I saw the clock. Perhaps by body is telling me that it is nearly time for hibernation! Just a handful of reports to go before I get to that point... --------------- Ski area information for Wednesday 3rd May 2023 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. • Niseko Now: Saturday 6th May 2023

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 1006cm Posted on Saturday 6th May 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. It's the last weekend of the season! The top lift at Hirafu is on hold due to poor visibility, so for the moment just two lifts operating. Forecasts seem to show that we may see clearer weather later on, and maybe tomorrow too. I will sign off for the season tomorrow - it's kind of sad, but I am looking forward to some lie-ins and upcoming hibernation. --------------- Ski area information for Saturday 6th May 2023 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. • Niseko Now: Sunday 7th May 2023

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 1006cm Posted on Sunday 7th May 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko on this official last day of the 2022-2023 season at Niseko Grand Hirafu, Sunday 7th May 2023. The three lifts at Hirafu are open for today and it's calm and fine weather this morning. From tomorrow, all the ski lifts will taking a well-earned rest. Here are the final snowfall numbers for the season and previous seasons – as observed by me, at base, here in Hirafu: 2022-2023 season: 1006cm 2021-2022 season: 1137cm 2020-2021 season: 1210cm 2019-2020 season: 728cm 2018-2019 season: 951cm 2017-2018 season: 1260cm 2016-2017 season: 686cm 2015-2016 season: 989cm 2014-2015 season: 1144cm 2013-2014 season: 1163cm 2012-2013 season: 1491cm So, just over 10m at 1006cm. It’s always good to get into 4-digit territory! In terms of raw numbers, that works out as being just under the average of the last 11 seasons. Of course, it is important to emphasise that raw numbers are far from the whole story. The full story - from my daily point of view anyway - can be found in the archive reports. Check the links at the top of the page. What a season it has been! In many ways, 'almost normal', I suppose. It started with a lot of excitement in autumn when the Japanese government decided to open up the international borders once again. Potential visitors were excited. Businesses were excited. It was definitely excite for everyone. Businesses quickly realised their big challenge - having to get back into the swing of things after a few years of relatively relaxed (but not excite) conditions. Finding enough staff to cope with a sudden influx of visitors became a season-long headache. (And not just for Niseko, but seemingly for much of Japan). Many people who managed to get here were rewarded with a lot of really good and consistent snow through the main part of the season, from mid-December until the end of February. Then the delivery of fresh snow kind of dried up from the beginning of March. As a result, the 'spring season' has felt particularly long and drawn out this year. From the beginning of May 2023, Japan has dropped remaining border restrictions (i.e. the need for proof of vaccination or a covid test to enter). No doubt the number of foreign visitors to the country will ramp up further in the coming months. All being well, the 2023-2024 ski season will be a truly 'normal' season in terms of snow, weather, the experience.... everything. (It occurs to me while thinking about this that defining a 'normal' season has become increasingly difficult). After thinking about the weather and snow every day for the best part of six months, it's too early for me to start thinking about what next year might bring. So, for now, allow me a much-needed rest from all that. I’ll start paying attention come October. That’s it, then. I hope you enjoyed following the Niseko Now reports this year. It has once again been a lot of fun to bring them to you. If you so wish, you can send me a message using the SnowJapan contact form. All Niseko Now-related comments are sent to me. It might not be possible to reply to them personally, but I do read them and appreciate any comments. Thank you. It is now time to fill myself up on toast and prepare for my prolonged summer hibernation. Thank you, take care, peace to all, and see you again in November. • Niseko Now: Saturday 25th February 2023

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 14cm Snowfall at base this season 943cm Posted on Saturday 25th February 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here So after that lovely sunshine yesterday morning, we are back to fresh snow this morning. Double hurray! Ski areas are reporting 10-15cm early morning and it is snowing now. As I write this at 8:20am, it's moderate snowfall at Hanazono and light snow at Niseko Village. We should be getting more during the day today and tomorrow too. Visibility is looking variable as well, depending on where you are around the mountain. It seems like many regions of Japan are going to get sunny skies early in the coming week, and we are due for some of that too. All ski areas opening as normal this morning. I hope you have a good weekend. Quick off topic note: some of you have sent in some 'end of season' thank you messages to SnowJapan. I thank you very much for those messages, it is always nice to hear from folks. But remember, I've got another 2+ months to go as I continue right on through until the last ski lift stops in early May. Hopefully lots of you will stick around until then! --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -3C, 15cm new snow, light winds. Moiwa 800m: -6.8C, WNW2.2m/s, light wind, 20cm new snow. Annupuri 1100m: -9.5C, NNW3.5m/s, 20cm new snow. Mizuno no Sawa: -8.1C, NNE2.3m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -8.8C, NNE5.6m/s, 25cm new snow. Hanazono#3: -8.9C, NNE3.6m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape N9m/s, Kamui Cape NNE6m/s, 1017hPa,1.4m waves. From midnight to dawn snow clouds dropped 15-20 cm of snow on the coast side of the mountains due to the warmer sea temperatures in the Sea of Japan south of Rumoi and a cold airstream above 1000m mixing. Light winds caused only minor slabs development however snow is expected to continue intermittently today. From observation and data the general avalanche risk is low. All gates are expected to open. Please listen to the patrols advice and prepare before going out of bounds. Do not use poor visibility as an excuse to enter strictly off limits areas. Surveillance is being increased and if you are caught you will be banned from using the ski areas. Do not ride under the lift lines near the Moiwa Quad Lift station, it is prohibited by National Cableway Laws. The snow conditions are good, but visibility is poor. Beware falling into cracks. There is no safety in this sport. Always be vigilant. Accidents can be prevented by being careful. Don't stay in the bottom of gullies. Avalanche comes from above. Is the beacon on? • Niseko Now: Monday 27th February 2023

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 12cm Snowfall at base this season 974cm Posted on Monday 27th February 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. Actually, I am in Sapporo at the moment, so that's not quite right. But after a phone call with a trusted friend, I believe all should be fine with this 'remote' report! I will keep it short. Cloud and blue sky this morning, with just a little fresh snowfall. Wind still appears to be an issue this morning with top lifts on hold at the start of the day. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -11C, scarce snowfall overnight. Moiwa 800m -10.1C, SW2.8m/s, large development of snowdrifts and cornices. Annupuri 1100m: -12.5C, W6.7m/s, cornice development. Mizuno no Sawa: -11.9C, W2.1m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -12.4C, WSW1.3m/s. Hanazono#3: -8.3℃, NNE4.2m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape WSW3m/s, Kamui cape SSW12m/s, 1027hPa, 2.0m waves. Clear morning under a high pressure system. Cornices and snowdrifts development has stopped now, however the strong northerly wind that persisted until late last night made cornices and snowdrifts grow huge and changed the terrain in some spots. 150cm thick slides from Feb 25th low-pressure layer was observed during tests at 800m elevation this morning. There’s a huge difference between windblown and windloaded areas. The avalanche risk is high in open steep slopes of heavily wind exposed bowls in the western side of the mountain. It is highly recommended not to ride large terrains such as the Backbowl today. The snow is good in lower elevation treeruns, however the snow is windpacked and heavy. The temperature is forecasted to rise today and make the snow melt. Beware of new cracks forming and/or falling into creeks. All gates are scheduled to open. Listen to the ski patrol’s advice before stepping out of the gates. There is no guaranteed safety in this sport. Have you switched your beacon on? Is your airbag functioning properly? The wind will eventually pick up again, beware of sudden weather changes. Have a nice day. --------------- Ski area information for Monday 27th February 2023 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. • Niseko Now: Sunday 26th February 2023

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 19cm Snowfall at base this season 962cm Posted on Sunday 26th February 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. It was windy last night and still quite windy this morning and what feels like changeable conditions this morning. Light snow is falling, though there is some blue sky to see in places, and visibility also looks quite varied at the moment. At 8am I measured just under 20cm snowfall and I note that Hirafu and Hanazono are both reporting up to around 30cm on upper elevations. Very nice. Unfortunately, at the start of operations, wind is affecting some lifts. All of the top lifts are going to be on hold, as is the Annupuri Gondola. Others seem to be opening as planned. Clear and sunny skies are lined up for tomorrow, along with some milder temps. Hopefully less wind too. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -4C, 15cm new snow, poor visibility. Moiwa 800m: -10.3C, W10.0m/s, strong wind and snow, poor visibility, snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: -12.8C, WNW7.6m/s, poor visibility, blizzard. Mizuno no Sawa: -11.5C, NNW5.5m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -12.6C, NE8.3m/s. Hanazono#3: -10.2C, N6.0m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape NNW14m/s, Kamui Cape NNW11m/s, 1020hPa,2.5m waves. Major snowdrift and cornice development due to strong N winds overnight. From observations and fracture tests at 800m, slab like snowdrifts are fracturing easily. The avalanche risk on cornice slopes and knolls is high above the treeline. Peak gates are expected to be closed. Other gates yet to be decided. Please respect the patrol's decision. Conditions are dangerous taking a high traverse from Hanazono Gate 5. The avalanche risk is rising in the Higashi One 3rd Creek area due to continued snow accumulations from the N winds. Also out of Moiwa Gate 6 today, conditions require care. Unstable snowdrifts are continuing to grow. Do not traverse from Annupuri Gondola Gate 8 to the center ridge cornice slope. Accidents have occurred in the past under similar conditions. Do not duck ropes. One set of tracks will lead others to follow, increasing the chances of an accident. Best not to stray too far from the ski runs today. Beware getting lost in poor visibility. Carry a beacon. Have a good day. --------------- Ski area information for Sunday 26th February 2023 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. • Niseko Now: Thursday 23rd February 2023

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 20cm Snowfall at base this season 927cm Posted on Thursday 23rd February 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here This morning I have a few mm over 20cm of snow to report, which is a very nice thing to be able to report on this national holiday (Emperor's Birthday). Expect more at higher elevations. It is a bit warmer this morning actually. Some forecast tell us that there is a chance of some spots of rain later on in lower areas and town (boooo), but hopefully it will be snow at higher elevations (hurray). Whichever, neither seem set to be heavy. Tomorrow might also be on the milder side with colder temps due for Saturday. For the moment, it is snowing. Niseko Annupuri have started to seemingly not update their new snowfall numbers again, so I'm on the verge of taking that out of the report like I did with Niseko Village. It's kind of frustrating, for sure. I am not arguing over specific numbers. (I know very well what a minefield that is!) It's the 'not updating' thing. But beyond that minor frustration: fresh snow, yey! --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -4C, 20cm snowfall, calm. Moiwa 800m: -4.9C, SSW0.9m/s, 25cm snowfall, snowdrifts developing. Annupuri 1100m: -7.1C, W6.0m/s, 30cm snowfall, snowdrift developing. Mizuno no Sawa: -4.9C, W2.9m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -7.1C, S1.4m/s. Hanazono#3: -4.4C, ESE1.9m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape SSE4m/s, Kamui cape SW9m/s, 1018hPa, 1.5m waves. Wind has come down in the morning, 25cm new snow slopes at 800m elevation, tree runs are reset. Westerly wind and snow continued throughout the night mainly around 22:00, 70cm snowdrift development in the last 12 hours on the slopes at 800m elevation. From the observation and weather data, the avalanche risk on the slopes under the 1000m elevation is low. 50cm snowdrift development on the slopes at 1200m elevation in the Kozan no Sawa sidewalls due to the storm during the night, though the avalanche risk is starting to stabilize, still remains high in the morning. Wind and snow will temporarily intensify as the cold front passes at 10am. The avalanche risk increases as the slab formation develops in the strong wind. Do not stay in the gully when the storm begins. Avalanche is a natural phenomenon but it becomes an accident when a person gets caught in it. Most accidents occur during the storm. NIDE’s observation ends today. The purpose of these tests is to study the structural vulnerability of snowdrifts and its changes. We believe that the scientific clarification of this phenomenon will be useful in preventing future accidents. We are grateful to the many people who have proved with their own experience that avalanches do not occur on slopes with stable snowdrifts, even if they jump off the cornices or knolls. All the gates will be open. Have a good day. --------------- Ski area information for Thursday 23rd February 2023 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. • Niseko Now: Saturday 17th December 2022

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 21cm Snowfall at base this season 226cm Posted on Saturday 17th December 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. I'm a bit later than usual this morning. No, I haven't been chomping on toast. Instead, there is much to check this morning and lots of information to update. More ski lifts and runs are open from this morning across the mountain. Basically, most areas are now open - apart from those top lifts and associated runs. I won't go through the details here; please check the lists below to see those. Floodlit night skiing also starts today, and I have noted which lifts operate below. It's called 'night skiing', but the lifts close at a relatively early 7:00pm or 7:30pm. I remember the days (quite a while ago) when night skiing was until 9:30pm. I'm pretty sure I remember that correctly. I am curious as to the reasons for such a change. Silly me, I almost forgot! I have measured another 20+ cm of lovely snowfall since yesterday. There should be some fine conditions to enjoy this morning. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 6am: -8℃, light winds, 30cm snow in last 12hrs, good visibility. Moiwa 700m: -9℃, light winds, 40cm snow in last 12hrs, some snowdrift development. Annupuri 1000m: -13℃, heavy snowfall, poor visibility, 40cm snow in last 12hrs, snowdrift development. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: WNW 10 m/s. Kamui Cape: WSW 11m/s, 1018 hPa, wave 2.5m. The isobars have started to move apart and snowdrift development has slowed. Snowfall has increased, changing from heavy wind crushed crystals to light crystals. Snowdrifts have started to stabilise near the treeline at 800m, however stabilisation at 1000m on SE slopes is delayed and the avalanche risk will continue. Stay off steep slopes at 1000m and creek sidewalls this morning. Beware large scale surface avalanches triggered by rider stimulation. The snow in the trees is good, be careful hitting trees though. Do not duck ropes. One set of tracks will lead others to follow, increasing the chance of an accident. Watch for sudden weather changes. Have a good day. --------------- Individual ski area information for Saturday 17th December 2022 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources.
