The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. Not quite 10cm of snow from my measurement this morning. Unfortunately the top lifts at all four ski areas are on hold at the start of the day, as well as the gondola at Annupuri. Pesky winds indeed. All other lifts currently planning to be open as scheduled. Visibility is varied and actually quite poor just at the moment over at Hirafu. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -3℃, 10cm new snow, moderate westerly, snow storm, poor visibility. Moiwa 800m: -6.2℃, WNW11.9m/s, 15cm new snow, 100cm cornice development, 60cm snow drift development. Annupuri 1150m: -9.5℃, WNW11m/s, gusts to 20m/s, new snow blown off and wind crust developing. Hirafu 1250m: -13℃,W15m/s,new snow blown off, blizzard. Coastal data- Benkei cape: WNW14m/s, Kamui cape: WNW8m/s, 1010hPa, 1.7m waves. The isobars are close together, the seas are stormy with an increasing swell and the mountains are in blizzard conditions with cornice and snowdrift development above 800m. East facing cornice slopes are accumulating snow with high avalanche risk on 30deg slopes. At the moment snowdrift development(hard slabs) is shallow, however development is rapidly increasing and there is the risk of drifts fracturing on weak layers with little stimulation. Peak gates will be closed. Please respect the patrol's decision. Do not duck ropes. Riding in the trees is recommended today. Visibility is limited, be careful of crashing into trees and other obstacles. It feels cold today, beware hypothermia and frostbite. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Well, like with most of Japan I believe, yesterday was a mild day with temps rising. There's a small amount of snow this morning and it's definitely a bit on the wet side. Good to see it though because I believe there was some rain leading up to it. Yuck! (Though I am happy not to have mentioned that word this season much). I am guessing that conditions will probably be variable out there, and perhaps a bit slower than normal. Good for the thigh muscles, if you like that kind of thing. All lifts opening as planned this morning. I'm going to have some toast and coffee now. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: 0℃, 10cm wet snow, light winds. Moiwa 800m: -3.8℃, NNW1.9m/s, 10cm wet snow, minor snowdrift development, foggy, poor visibility. Annupuri 1150m: -6.3℃, NNW2.2m/s, 10cm new snow, good visibility above sea of clouds. Hirafu 1250m: -6℃, light west winds to dawn, poor visibility, trace new snow. Hirafu 1000m: -5.6℃, NNE0.3m/s, 10cm new snow. Coastal data- Benkei cape: W5m/s, Kamui cape: NW6m/s, 1004hPa, 1.3m waves. There is a low pressure front off Ishikawa pref, the pressure gradient is shallow, the seas and mountains are calm. The influence of cold air on yesterday's warm air has caused low level cloud to 1000m, clear above, foggy below. Overnight a little snow fell with some minor snow drift development. The general avalanche risk is low, however shallow avalanches are likely to occur on open 30deg slopes above 1100m due to a Feb 26 layer formed by a temperature gradient. All gates are expected to be open. Below 700m conditions are foggy with 15cm new wet snow, visibility should improve after 9am. Be careful hitting trees, falling into cracks. Beware opened creeks, the water is cold and you will need ropes and some help to get out. A helmet and beacon are recommended. A helmet to prevent a fatal injury, a beacon to save your friend. Make sure your airbag works too. Side country is back country, no difference and the same dangers. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It's a beautiful morning in the region. Hardly any cloud at all over towards Mt Yotei, just a little around the side of the mountain, and some around our mountains. Perhaps they will clear as the morning progresses. The snow in my report is left overs from after my report yesterday. It clearly feels milder this morning and is currently -2C at base. We are expecting that to rise though and maybe even up to around +5C during the day. That's toasty! Tomorrow should be less toasty. It's the weekend again and so the Holiday Number 1 pair at Niseko Grand Hirafu and the Jumbo Number 3 pair at Niseko Annupuri are also up and running. All lifts appear to be opening as planned at the start of the day. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -6℃, no new snow, sunny. Moiwa 800m: -4.2℃, SW1.4m/s, no new snow, good visibility, sunny. Annupuri 1150m: -7.4℃, WSW8.1m/s, no new snow, cloud speed fast. Hirafu Peak: -6℃, W8m/s. Hirafu 1000m: -6.9℃, S8.4m/s, no new snow, good visibility. Coastal data- Benkei cape: WSW7m/s, Kamui cape: SW19m/s, 1009hPa, 1.5m waves. The snow has stopped and the sun is out. Light winds at the mountain base however above 1000m a strong WSW wind is blowing. New cornice development in this wind will easily collapse, take care. No new snow overnight, from observation and data the general avalanche risk is low. On high elevation wind effected slopes like the upper Kozan no Sawa sidewall, a hard crust has developed and if stimulated a flying carpet type avalanche could easily occur. Be careful. Peak gates are expected to be open. Please listen to the patrols advice and prepare before exiting the gates. Yesterday's tracks can still be seen off the groomers, but the snow is still good. Entry to Haru no Taki and Yu no Sawa is strictly prohibited. The sun and rising temperatures today and tomorrow on these south facing slopes will increase the risk of a large scale avalanches. Please respect Niseko Rules. Groomers are epic today. Be careful crashing and hitting something. To help avoid a fatal accident, wear a helmet and use a beacon. We are sick of the new snow for a while. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Hello and good morning from Niseko. I have more snowfall to report this morning... almost 20cm of it. That's over 20cm average every day over the last six reports here at base. Nice. Hirafu is this morning reporting 30cm. It continues with light snowfall (actually started to be a bit heavier these last few minutes) and visibility seems ok, though will be more limited in some areas. Looks like pesky wind is affecting those top lifts again at the start of the day. Naughty wind. Is that a bit rain on some forecasts for tomorrow? I certainly don't want to believe that! Certainly looks like it will be somewhat milder tomorrow, positively warm in the big picture. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -4℃, light wind, 8cm snowfall in the last 12hrs. Moiwa 800m: -7℃, WNW11.3m/s, wind and snow. Annupuri 1150m: -9.8℃, WNW11.2m/s, wind and snow. Hirafu 1000m: -9.5℃, ESE2.9m/s, snow. Coastal data- Benkei cape: NNW13m/s, Kamui cape: NW11m/s, 1010hPa, 1.4m waves. The atmospheric pressure pattern hasn't changed, still light snow at the base and stormy up top, the snow pack is increasing. It just keeps snowing, like rainy season in south asia. W10-13m/s winds continue on the seas with a below 2m wave. From observation and data the avalanche risk above 1000m is somewhat high.　There is the possibility of rider triggered soft slab avalanche in locations like kozan no sawa where snowdrifts have been increasing due to the westerly winds. Be careful on steep slopes with bumps and wind crests. The number of cracks is increasing, if you fall into one you may not be able to get out by yourself. Avoid riding alone. Gate openings yet to be decided. Please respect the patrols decisions. The snow is still good. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here This morning I have just measured 15cm of new snowfall since my last report. It is currently -4C and probably won't get much higher than that. Milder conditions are forecast over the coming days though, particularly on Saturday. Visibility is varied, but as I write this it looks pretty limited at the Hirafu base. Snow conditions should be excellent. (Unfortunately, it looks like the top lifts are going to start the day on hold). ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -5℃, calm, 15cm snowfall in the last 12hrs, no snowdrift development, good visibility. Moiwa800m: -8.1℃, WNW8.4m/s, light snowstorm, good visibility, snowdrift development has eased. Annupuri 1150m: -11.3℃, WNW8.2m/s, light snowstorm, good visibility, 20cm snowfall. Hirafu Peak: -13℃, light NW snow wind, minor snowdrift development. Hanazono 1000: -10.8℃, ENE3.1m/s, 20cm snowfall, snowdrift development has eased. Coastal data- Benkei cape: NW14m/s, Kamui cape: WSW10m/s, 1013hPa, 1.3m waves. The isobars are moving apart and it seems the storm has passed. Snowdrift and cornice development has been massive over the last 72hrs, however they are starting to stabilise now. Peak gate openings yet to be decided, please respect the patrols decisions. Even if the gates open, avoid riding open cornice slopes and knolls above 800m, the avalanche risk continues. Avoid valley bottoms, this is where the avalanches run. This information is published for the safety of out of bounds resort riders. If one person ducks the ropes, others will follow, increasing the chances of an accident. Obey Niseko Rules. Today the mountain is a powder paradise. Take care not to fall into cracks. Beware a sudden weather change. Is your beacon on? The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I have 14cm of fresh snow to report this morning. It is still snowing but less windy - at base anyway - and it does feel like we have passed through the major part of this storm. Still, summit lifts might struggle today and indeed they are not going to be moving at the start of the day. It is a national holiday today (Happy Birthday, Emperor) and so there will be more people around than on a normal Wednesday. The Jumbo Number 3 lift is open today, but the Holiday lift at Hirafu seems to be taking a holiday. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -6℃, calm, 20cm snowfall in the last 12hrs. Although the wind is still blowing higher elevation, the storm has calmed down. Due to the heavy storm in the last 48hrs, wind affected snowdrifts have accumulated at all levels of elevation. 150cm thick, 300cm long snowdrift development at some part of leeward slopes at 800m elevation. Difficult grooming with hard crushed crystal snow. It will take some time to restore the course and operate the top lift. The avalanche risk has started to decrease based on observation and weather data, however the gates above 1000m elevation will be closed to prevent accidents. Please follow patrols instructions. Avalanche accidents are most likely to occur during and right after the storm. Even though the storm has stopped, it takes some time to stabilize snowdrifts created by 25m/s strong wind and snow. Do not stimulate cornices and knolls and open slopes over 30 degrees. There is a very high risk of surface slab avalanches that sweeps the entire valley with 100km/h speed. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here There's tons of new snowfall on the ground (and everywhere else) this morning... the (joint) most reported in one day this season, I believe: I have just measured 40cm. Hirafu is this morning reporting 55cm of snowfall. :) Yesterday, only the Ace Family quad at Hirafu, the Dream quad at Annupuri and the Community and Banzai lifts at Niseko Village got to open. I wonder if many people used them?! It was pretty wild. At least I think it was anyway - I spent the whole day warm and toasty and had a relaxing day. (But silly me, I went down the rabbit hole of reading the world news. Note to self - try not to do that again anytime soon). Anyway, back to this morning. Everyone is dealing with all the snow early on. It's still snowing, visibility is limited and there is still a bit of wind but it is definitely not like yesterday. More lifts should be opening, but may be delayed and the top areas remain closed. The gondolas at Village and Annupuri are closed, but the Hirafu gondola and Hanazono gondola are going to be open. A few things are absolutely sure. There's lots of fresh snow and the quality is excellent. But conditions are probably going to be challenging. Super care required. OK so now I am going to go get to work with my shovel. More snow incoming... ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -6℃, light winds, heavy snowfall of wind effected snow, 35cm in last 12hrs. Annupuri1150m: -11.5℃, NNW7.8m/s, occasional extremely heavy wind and snow, major snowdrift development, difficult for grooming machines. The atmospheric pressure gradient has settled a little, however strong wind snow continues. There has been major snowdrift development and unstable cornice growth at all levels. Expect avalanches to easily occur from natural cornice collapses above 800m. At lower elevations also expect avalanches when cornices slopes and steep slopes like lift lines are carelessly stimulated. Suggested to stay off of areas like this today. Over 80cmof snow has fallen in the last 24hrs, with snowdrift development reaching 300cm in some locations. Around 1100m on 30deg slopes expect large surface slab avalanches with wide fractures, running at high speed, due to crushed crystal snow and wind. The avalanche risk on surrounding mountains is also very high. Peak gates will be closed, please respect the patrols decisions. When the wind calms down the snow will stabilise. The snow in the trees is deep and heavy, you will need skins or snowshoes to exit many areas. Is your beacon on? The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning and it's a very wild start to the week. Heavy winds make it really difficult to say actually how much snow has fallen since the last report. There's places where there's probably 50cm and more, but that's (surely) because of the wind. My trusted measuring point, and a few other check points that I usually look at as backup, bring me believe that 20cm is representative. The biggest feature of the morning is the wind that is blowing the snow around. Hopefully the wind will become less severe later on, but we are expecting further snowfall for at least a few more days. Visibility is very low, avalanche rise is high. Even if any ski lifts get to open this morning (at the moment just a few lower lifts are indicated as possibly opening), I would say it is one of those day for learning new toast recipes or something less interesting than that. It doesn't feel safe out there. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -6.5℃, blizzard, heavy snowfall, poor visibility, 50cm snow drift development. Moiwa800m: -8.5℃, WNW16.5m/s. From data and observation, below 800m under lift lines and on course edges surface avalanches with over 50cm fractures are expected to occur. On Niseko and surrounding mountains the avalanche risk is very high. Regardless of underlying layers, snowdrifts developed during strong winds are unstable and are likely to collapse on weak lines. Be careful, avalanches are likely even in steep forested areas like Nitonupuri. Roads are also in white out conditions today. If you have to drive, go slowly and use your hazard lights, but better to stay in. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I bring good news this morning. We have had a very nice layer of fresh snow since yesterday. I measured 24cm of it and it is still snowing. It's not the lightest, driest and fluffiest of snow, due to it being (big picture) relatively mild. But tomorrow looks like it should be somewhat colder and more snowfall is due over the next few days as well. That all sounds good. Looks like the top lift at Hanazono might be a bit delayed but other than that everywhere should be opening as planned. I hope you have a good Sunday. Crested snowdrift development slowly continues on the NW slopes due the southerly wind. From morning data and observation the general avalanche risk is low. Gates are expected to open depending on lift operations. Please listen to the patrols advice before exiting the gates. Snowfall is a little damp, low pressure crystal snow - relatively fast. At the moment slab formation is minimal, however be careful of fractures on steeper wind influenced slopes. Ride one by one. Be careful of cracks hidden by new snowfall. We're going to enjoy some more regular snow though coming up in the week ahead. Fingers crossed! It's quite clear this morning and bright though some cloud still hanging around. All clear around Mt Yotei in a hazy kind of way, with a bit of fluffy cloud on the top. Kind of reminds me of that yummy strawberry daifuku I had yesterday. Anyway, it's the weekend again, so the Holiday pair lift at Niseko Grand Hirafu and the Jumbo Number 3 lift at Annupuri should be up and running to deal with the, er, 'crowds'. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -7℃, 10cm snowfall, light winds. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Yesterday we ended up with some blue skies and bright sunshine. The temperature is -4C and that will probably get up to about -3C or -2C at base later on. So it's relatively mild. There is another 4cm of snowfall to report to you and some very light snow falling around the time I am writing this, but there's also a bit of sun shining through my window right now. And some blue skies to be seen in some directions. The shiny Gondola and Number 3 lift at Hanazono are apparently going be a bit delayed opening this morning. Something to do with maintenance/inspection. I hope we get some decent snow Sunday through Tuesday like the forecasts seem to show. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Well, yesterday we got to enjoy some blue skies in the afternoon as the snow stopped. The small amount of snow I record today is from yesterday morning. It is an overcast kind of morning and it feels relatively mild, with a light southerly wind. I expect all of the lifts will be able to be opening as planned. When is the snow going to kick into a higher gear again? Maybe around late Saturday and Sunday onwards. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -5℃, calm, no snowfall. Moiwa800m: -7℃, calm, no snowfall. Anupuri1150m: -7℃, E4m/s, no snowfall, good visibility. Hirafu1250m: -8℃, SE5m/s, light snowfall. Coastal data Benkei cape: S7m/s, Kamui cape: calm, 1007hPa, 0.7m waves. A low pressure system is approaching but the atmospheric pressure gradient remains flat. The wind in Shiribeshi is calm. There is no relevant snowfall, however yesterday’s southerly wind has made cornices and snowdrifts grow in spots above 1000m elevation in Hirafu side. The overall avalanche risk is low today. All gates will open. The whole mountain is tracked out. Be careful of overspeeding, losing control, hitting trees and falling in cracks. The weather may suddenly change as the pressure distribution moves. Stay prudent. This information is issued for preventing accidents in the out of bounds area around the resort.
