The good news is that I see the ski area is actually reporting 27cm of fresh up in the top Yamabiko area. That sounds good! It isn't feeling particularly cold, but should be getting a bit colder as the morning goes on. Fingers crossed more snow, too. One other thing today is wind. The ski area is warning that strong winds might affect gondola operations. - Niseko Now: Sunday 14th December 2025
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 149cm Good morning from Niseko. It does not feel quite as cold this morning but we do expect a drop in temperatures later and over the next several days. Along with fresh snow and some windy conditions. Just a bit of snow since my report yesterday. At base level, Hanazono is reporting 2cm, Annupuri is reporting 5cm... and Hirafu is reporting 15cm. Hmmmm... Following on from my comments about nighta/evening skiing yesterday, here is some historic data showing when the floodlit skiing has closed at Niseko Grand Hirafu in previous seasons: 1986 season: night skiing until 9:30pm 1987 season: night skiing until 9:00pm 1993 season: night skiing until 9:30pm 1996 season: night skiing until 9:30pm 2003 season: night skiing until 9:00pm 2012 season: night skiing until 8:30pm 2021 season: night skiing until 8:00pm 2022 season: night skiing until 7:00pm 2023 season: night skiing until 7:00pm 2024 season: night skiing until 7:00pm 2025 season: night skiing until 7:00pm I'd love to be able to be out there until 9:30pm! (And also know the reasons for the early closing time in recent years). The mountain is not fully open yet, along with gates. As noted in the Avalanche Report below, please stay in bounds and... just respect stuff. Like good folk do. Anyway, it's time for some Sunday morning toast! ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base at 6am: -5℃, light winds, no new snow, good visibility. Moiwa Mikaeri 800m: -9℃, E1.6m/s, no new snow. Hanazono 800m: -5.2℃, SSW4.4m/s, no new snow in the last 12hrs. Coastal data: Benkei cape SSE4m/s, Kamui cape SSE4m/s, 1019hPa, wave height 0.6m. There has been no new snowfall and wind slabs above 800m have consolidated. The overall avalanche risk is low, however be careful as cornices around 1000m are prone to breakage. Due to the lack of snow the bamboo grass has not yet flattened, making only groomed runs suitable for skiing. Lets hope the next storm covers them up. Snowfall is expected to start in the afternoon from the front of an approaching low pressure system. Strong winds and snow will follow, bringing rapid cornice and snowdrift growth on the lee sides of ridges. The avalanche risk will increase. Pay close attention to future snowfall trends. Most avalanche accidents occur during or immediately after snowstorms. When entering the mountains, please consider the risks of weather changes and plan your climb and skiing accordingly. Skiing off-piste is not yet permitted. Do not thoughtlessly duck under ropes. Guests must follow the ski resort rules and must not cut lift lines. Respect for all is required regardless of nationality. Have a fun, injury-free Sunday. ------------------------------------ Niseko HANAZONO Resort Official 24 hours snowfall (reported by the ski area): Peak: 10cm Base: 2cm Official snow depth (reported by the ski area): Peak: 145cm (-10cm change since yesterday) Base: 73cm (-12cm change since yesterday) Planned lift operations: All 4 lifts Gondola until 7:00pm Planned open courses: All main runs open except Legend of Shinya ------------------ Niseko Tokyu Grand Hirafu Official 24 hours snowfall (reported by the ski area): Peak: 15cm Base: 15cm Official snow depth (reported by the ski area): Peak: 185cm (no change since yesterday) Base: 75cm (no change since yesterday) Planned lift operations: Ace Gondola Ace Family quad (until 7:00pm) Ace Number 3 pair King Gondola King Number 3 six Swinging Monkey Planned open courses: Family Sennoki Alpen Beginners access Green Shirakaba Center Kokutai Rinkan Jumbo ------------------ Niseko Village Ski Resort Official snow depth (reported by the ski area): Peak: 125cm (+5cm change since yesterday) Base: 60cm (no change since yesterday) Planned lift operations: Niseko Gondola Upper Village Gondola (until 7:00pm) Village Express (until 7:00pm) Community Chair Banzai Chair (until 7:00pm) ------------------ Niseko Annupuri Kokusai Official 24 hours snowfall (reported by the ski area): Peak: 5cm Base: 5cm Official snow depth (reported by the ski area): Peak: 100cm (-10cm change since yesterday) Base: 50cm (-10cm change since yesterday) Planned lift operations: Annupuri gondola Dream Number 1 quad (until 7:00pm) Jumbo Number 1 quad Jumbo Number 2 pair Planned open courses: Utopia Shirakaba Paradise Junior Family Junior ------------------ Niseko Moiwa Ski Resort Planned lift operations: All 3 lifts Niseko Now 2025-2026 season Data as of Sunday 14th December 2025 Total snowfall at base so far 149cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 18 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 24cm (on 12th December) November 2025 snowfall 29cm reported on 7 days December 2025 snowfall 120cm reported on 11 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Kutchan/Niseko. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 15cm Snowfall at base this season 125cm Posted on Saturday 13th December 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A little more snow overnight, and at least four resorts are running a handful of lifts, while two others have left up information from long ago and no report on whether they did in fact decide to open today. OK, the curmudgeon gets to start the year with a rant: why don’t the resorts put up useful information for their guests in a quickly-accessible place, and in a timely way? Whatever your thoughts on our digitally-immersed world, it sure is easier to get a lot more information quickly than ever before. So why not use it and let people know the basics—like, are you actually open or not? Or do we next need to find your Instagram, Facebook or Tiktok location.... Some of the resorts are great; maybe most do a good job of keeping new information up there for us. But didn’t a great big international, slick new operation take over one of the resorts, yet announces “We decided to open on December 13!” at the top of the site, then has course/lift information from November 9 below? Hope you don’t run that new hotel like that.... Rant is now ended. The season has begun. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 22cm Snowfall at base this season 147cm Good morning from Niseko. More lovely fresh snow to report this morning and there is a lot going on. Including the Niseko Gondola at Niseko Village ski area getting going and the Jumbo Number 2 pair lift at Annupuri also joining in the fun. There is a bunch more courses opening up, too. Varying snowfall numbers coming in from the ski areas this morning ranging from 20cm-40cm at base levels and up to 50cm at peak. They all sound good to me. Forecasts show more snow to arrive across the coming days, so things are going well at the moment. Nice and snowy. Also, hurray, today is the first day of 'nighta' floodlit skiing. As the lifts close up at either 7:00pm or 7:30pm, I prefer to call it 'evening' ski. I have talked about this previously, but in the past night skiing continued much later into the actual night. I was hoping that the ski areas might go back to keeping open a bit later again this season, but that is not the case. I have added info on which lifts are scheduled to be open for night skiing to the list below. Just one early season personal observation. The Hirafu ski area has been reporting some rather large snowfall numbers. By that, I mean more than the other ski areas, the Avalanche Report and also more than I am seeing with my own eyes. I'm keeping a nerdy eye on those. (You can, too, in the below list). I would be more than pleased if they are always spot on correct (rather than, er, 'rounded up'). Let's see how that continues... ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base at 6am: -7℃, light wind, 20cm new snow over last 12 hours, light winds, good visibility. Hanazono 800m: -9.8℃, NNW5.0m/s, 20cm new snow. Moiwa Mikaeri 800m: -10℃, NNW1.7m/s, light snow. Coastal data: Benkei cape NW9m/s, Kamui CapeW8m/s, 1025hPa, 2.3m waves. The isobar width is widening and ocean wave height and winds are both decreasing. Snowfall above 800m has reached 50cm in some places, with snow cornices forming in some areas. As the wind and snow calm down, the snow will change from broken crystals to crystalline snow, causing snow to slide. Based on observation data, the overall avalanche risk has decreased. On 40-degree leeward slopes above 800m there is still a possibility of surface avalanches with a 50cm fractured surface thickness in some places. Caution is required on ridge drops and gullies in mountainous areas. Skiing out of bounds from within the ski resort is still prohibited. Follow the Niseko rules and listen to the advice of the ski patrol. There have been many injuries on the slopes. Be careful of reckless riding and falling. There is no safety in this sport. Have a nice day. ------------------------------------ Niseko HANAZONO Resort Official 24 hours snowfall (reported by the ski area): Peak: 30cm Base: 20cm Official snow depth (reported by the ski area): Peak: 150cm (+15cm change since yesterday) Base: 85cm (+7cm change since yesterday) Planned lift operations: All 4 lifts Planned open courses: All except Setsuzoku and Legend of Shinya Planned night skiing: Gondola Until 7:00pm ------------------ Niseko Tokyu Grand Hirafu Official 24 hours snowfall (reported by the ski area): Peak: 50cm Base: 40cm Official snow depth (reported by the ski area): Peak: 185cm (+20cm change since yesterday) Base: 75cm (+10cm change since yesterday) Planned lift operations: Ace Gondola Ace Family quad Ace Number 3 pair King Gondola King Number 3 six Swinging Monkey Planned open courses: Family Sennoki Alpen Beginners access Green Shirakaba Center Kokutai Rinkan Jumbo Planned night skiing: Ace Family quad Until 7:00pm ------------------ Niseko Village Ski Resort Official snow depth (reported by the ski area): Peak: 120cm Base: 60cm Planned lift operations: Niseko Gondola Upper Village Gondola Village Express Community Chair Banzai Chair ------------------ Niseko Annupuri Kokusai Official 24 hours snowfall (reported by the ski area): Peak: 40cm Base: 40cm Official snow depth (reported by the ski area): Peak: 110cm (+50cm change since yesterday) Base: 60cm (+30cm change since yesterday) Planned lift operations: Annupuri gondola Dream Number 1 quad Jumbo Number 1 quad Jumbo Number 2 pair Planned open courses: Utopia Shirakaba Paradise Junior Family Junior Planned night skiing: Jumbo Number 1 quad Until 7:30pm Niseko Now 2025-2026 season Data as of Saturday 13th December 2025 Total snowfall at base so far 147cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 17 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 24cm (on 12th December) November 2025 snowfall 29cm reported on 7 days December 2025 snowfall 118cm reported on 10 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Kutchan/Niseko.
