We have a beautiful and atmospheric look going on this morning with a mix of cloud, some blue sky and the sun shining through in places. Thankfully the wind has eased off and ski areas can open as planned this morning. Goryu is still top area only and Happo-one is still 'middle-upper bit'. So you can't ride back down to base at those ski areas yet. You can ski back down to base at 47 and Tsugaike. I've done my best with the list below regarding the other ski areas that are part open this morning and will be doing more checking during today. Hopefully the report will be a bit cleaner tomorrow. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 22cm Snowfall at base this season 147cm Good morning from Niseko. More lovely fresh snow to report this morning and there is a lot going on. Including the Niseko Gondola at Niseko Village ski area getting going and the Jumbo Number 2 pair lift at Annupuri also joining in the fun. There is a bunch more courses opening up, too. Varying snowfall numbers coming in from the ski areas this morning ranging from 20cm-40cm at base levels and up to 50cm at peak. They all sound good to me. Forecasts show more snow to arrive across the coming days, so things are going well at the moment. Nice and snowy. Also, hurray, today is the first day of 'nighta' floodlit skiing. As the lifts close up at either 7:00pm or 7:30pm, I prefer to call it 'evening' ski. I have talked about this previously, but in the past night skiing continued much later into the actual night. I was hoping that the ski areas might go back to keeping open a bit later again this season, but that is not the case. I have added info on which lifts are scheduled to be open for night skiing to the list below. Just one early season personal observation. The Hirafu ski area has been reporting some rather large snowfall numbers. By that, I mean more than the other ski areas, the Avalanche Report and also more than I am seeing with my own eyes. I'm keeping a nerdy eye on those. (You can, too, in the below list). I would be more than pleased if they are always spot on correct (rather than, er, 'rounded up'). Let's see how that continues... ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base at 6am: -7℃, light wind, 20cm new snow over last 12 hours, light winds, good visibility. Hanazono 800m: -9.8℃, NNW5.0m/s, 20cm new snow. Moiwa Mikaeri 800m: -10℃, NNW1.7m/s, light snow. Coastal data: Benkei cape NW9m/s, Kamui CapeW8m/s, 1025hPa, 2.3m waves. The isobar width is widening and ocean wave height and winds are both decreasing. Snowfall above 800m has reached 50cm in some places, with snow cornices forming in some areas. As the wind and snow calm down, the snow will change from broken crystals to crystalline snow, causing snow to slide. Based on observation data, the overall avalanche risk has decreased. On 40-degree leeward slopes above 800m there is still a possibility of surface avalanches with a 50cm fractured surface thickness in some places. Caution is required on ridge drops and gullies in mountainous areas. Skiing out of bounds from within the ski resort is still prohibited. Follow the Niseko rules and listen to the advice of the ski patrol. There have been many injuries on the slopes. Be careful of reckless riding and falling. There is no safety in this sport. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . The snow is blowing around this morning, making one reading difficult, but it's in the range of 25-35cm. There will probably be more than that at higher elevations. My own measuring is 28cm. A good amount for sure. But the wind is an issue this morning and affecting some lifts that are scheduled to be open today. Okushiga Kogen plans to be part open from tomorrow morning. I would imagine with this snow there might be more opening up tomorrow, too, including further lifts and terrain at ski areas that are already part open. It's not clear what lifts will be operating, they will decide that later today, but it will be part open. The ski area is reporting 35cm of fresh overnight, though I'm not seeing as much as that. But, a decent amount all the same. Tomorrow should be clearer (and less windy than today), with more snow forecast Sunday night. One day before a handful of planned ski area openings; we got some snow, but I wonder if it will be enough to let people get out on the snow — you’d be surprised how much stuff is out there on the ski runs that needs some pretty good cover to make things safe. I know there are people who just can’t wait to get skiing and hike up the ski runs for a first slide, but don’t be surprised when the ski area bans you. Safety first, and all that. Actually, it was pretty fun to see the first couple of bright lightning flashes just before last night’s rain turned to snow. It’s a traditional sign of snow coming, although not really super heavy yet. Let’s just see what happens; I always tell people that often, even in a record-snowfall year, we wonder if a White Christmas is going to happen. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Snowy greetings to you from Nozawa. First of all the bad news. Wind is preventing the gondola from moving this morning, so effectively the ski area is closed today. Data below shows what is 'normally open'. I'm not seeing any snowfall numbers reported by the ski area this morning, but I can report 19cm from down at base. Perhaps that isn't as much as we thought we might get, but it is snowing and we are expecting snow through the day today. And I imagine a fair bit more than that up at Yamabiko. A break in the snow tomorrow, but more coming in later on Sunday. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Hello from Hakuba where we have a fairly modest layer of fresh snow on the ground around base. But there are some impressive snowfall numbers being reported from higher elevations: Hakuba Goryu: 50cm Hakuba 47: 40cm Hakuba Happo-one: 40cm Very nice. Unfortunately, Happo-one is not able to open at time of writing (8:45am) due to windy conditions on the mountain. Hakuba Goryu appears to be similarly affected. Hakuba 47 and Tsugaike seem to be opening. Jigatake, just south of Hakuba, is open from today with the Number 1 pair lift moving. Hakuba Norikura has announced that it will be open from tomorrow with the Alps Number 1 pair lift scheduled to be moving. Kashimayari will also be part open from tomorrow. I can't find any clear messaging from Hakuba Cortina but I imagine there is enough snow to open tomorrow. There's a lot happening right now. My reports will be daily from now on, but might be delayed as info is gathered at the start of the day. Looks like Mother Nature will take the day off tomorrow, it is Saturday after all, but then return Sunday for a 3-day engagement. With the additional snow, the resort has now opened a second run (B1) down to the base on the Furano side. I tell you, these run names are SO inspiring!! Just really jazz me up. Sound like stupid Bingo cards. Kitanomine will open on Dec 22, and no amount of snow will change their mind. Trust me. Only 13 more shopping days until Christmas. That's all folks. Think snow.
