There are days when you just don’t feel like telling the whole story about what’s out there on the mountain, knowing there are lots of people here on their holidays, ready to savor that famous Myoko powder. I heard about others looking forward to a backcountry experience on the last days of 2025. Ain't going to happen. Well, the backcountry for sure, because even on a good year living in a rain forest means you need a lot of snow to cover up all the things that live under the trees: vines, bamboo grass, saplings, bears (this year). I do feel bad when guests face rain on top of the low snow and closed resorts—but I have to say that, here in the very pages of SnowJapan, your reliable reporters have for these many years said such things as, “We feel lucky if we get a White Christmas”. The resorts will usually be open, sometimes, like this one, in marginal conditions, and then in a few weeks everything turns around. It’s likely I’ll be here in January reporting on lifts delayed and roads closed due to heavy snow. And then everyone leaves in early March, even though there’s lots of good snow out there until April. Mountain weather. Mother Nature. Climate change. Like, in the afternoon kind of late. It must be a great day when that's the top news, right?! Unfortunately, I have some more rain (at best, sleet) to report this morning. Yuckity-yuck. I do feel for the people who are here expecting the famous Niseko conditions, but it is my duty to keep on reporting through the good and the... less than good. And on that jolly note, have a fun Christmas Eve if such things are a thing for you. Santa-san might be a bit late with his delightfully soft and fluffy snow, but delivery is still apparently due from Friday. I'll be here to sign for it. For me, it's delightfully light cake time, though no fried chicken this time round. Got to keep at least one of the dating-back-to-the-Edo-period Japanese Christmas traditions going. ;) See you tomorrow afternoon. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base +3℃, raining at pre-dawn. Sea of Japan Benkei cape S8m/s, Kamui cape S9m/s, 1015hPa, 0.8m waves. A low-pressure system is moving north over the Sea of Japan, bringing an inflow of warm air. New snowfall has been minimal, and Niseko experienced rain through the early morning, causing the snowpack to loosen and melt. This information is provided continuously to prevent accidents. Given that many incidents occur during severe weather, we base our danger assessments on the observation of wind slab formation and the numerical analysis of shifting weather data. Wind slabs that accumulate rapidly on leeward slopes during blizzards remain structurally unstable until the winds subside. Any stimulations in these areas can cause a wide-range fracture, leading to an instantaneous soft-slab surface avalanche. It is true that avalanches originate from weak layers; however, predicting them through pit checks before they occur—while not impossible—is extremely difficult. Understanding the cause after an accident is too late, and will not bring back those who have been lost. Avoiding stimulating the leeward slopes during a blizzard is the most reliable way to prevent accidents. This is precisely why Niseko manages the opening and closing of the gates. Overconfidence in one’s own knowledge often leads to disaster. If everyone correctly understands the dangers of a blizzard and treats that knowledge as common sense, accidents can be avoided. Please stay alert for sudden weather changes. Remember, there is no such thing as absolute safety in this sport. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 174cm Just a dusting really since my last report, even if it did snow lightly at times during the day yesterday. So no new cm to add this morning. Hirafu is claiming 5cm of fresh at base as well as upper. I don't know if that has been updated for today or left over from yesterday. Perhaps they did get 5cm. We have largely cloudy skies this morning with some hints of sun breaking through in places. Maybe we will get sunshine today. One question that people often seem to have is how much snow to expect around Christmas. On Thursday, I'm going to repeat the exercise I did on the first day of the season to see how we are faring this season re: snowfall at that point in time. (I haven't prepared it yet, but, advance warning, I don't think it's going to be excite). More and more people are around now as Christmas fast approaches. At the same time, I sense a relatively low-gear atmosphere still. Perhaps it's just me as someone who loves to be able to report fresh snow and not really feeling it yet. And it's not as if I'm bar hopping and partying every night! All the other reports from other regions of Japan also seem to be saying it, but.... Friday. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . I'm going to wait for reports from the resorts before I get this up, even though I’m starting at 7:30 (and not many are up yet). Lots of rain yesterday, but it got cold enough that we have a few cm of new snow, and dense fog. We need all the snow we can get; the snow was basically down to ground at the base level. I kept hearing reports through the day of the ground slowly appearing on the way up to Akakan’s No. 1 lift (with lots of people carrying their skis to the lift), but that demarcation line got too high, and the lift is closed today. Alpen Blick Resort (Ikenotaira) appears to be closed, but hard to tell. They've got today's date above yesterday's temperature and snowpack, with all lifts marked as closed. Just about 8:30, and all the reports are now in. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Hello from Madarao. Well, after the rain we have a bit of snow. The ski area is reporting about 5cm, and I have measured slightly under 4cm. Not a huge amount, but better than rain. It's probably going to be icy out there and remember, Madarao is currently all ungroomed. So, yeah, the ski areas are open but we need lots of fresh. Friday is currently looking like the best bet for a situation-changing amount of fresh. Fingers crossed everyone. It was overcast just before but there now seem to be some breaks in the cloud appearing. A moderate wind. Clearer skies expected tomorrow. Everyone is waiting for a good delivery of snow and all being well we'll get that from Friday when it looks like it'll be much colder. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . It certainly was not a great weekend of weather for our snow, but at least this morning it is noticeable colder and the ski area is reporting 8cm of fresh snow on the top Yamabiko area. Just a dusting around base, really, and just about enough to justify the 1cm recorded in this report. There's still a damp feeling to proceedings though. Friday is looking promising. I like the prospect of possible 'heavy snow'. Let's see if that delivers. For now, though, a trip up to the top of the mountain seems called for!
