  • Myoko Now: Wednesday 28th January 2026

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 28cm Snowfall at base this season 787cm Posted on Wednesday 28th January 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A little more reasonable morning today; it gets busy here in winter! So many things to do, so many people to meet, so much snow (finally) to deal with. The last one is tough, especially when we get a massive fall like the last one, but, you know, there is some satisfaction in getting things ready to roll as the snow walls rise ever higher.... My editor here (part of the full SnowJapan reporting team) sent me a link to local paper reporting on something I’d heard a rumor about. Seems that a team of them foreigners were out in our sidecountry and set off a pretty good slide that blocked the road to Highland Hotel, an accommodation kind of off the road up past Seki Onsen and on to Tsubame Onsen. The last spot on the road, in other words, and apparently cut off for a while because of those mad snowboarders. There have been several groups out there filming videos, including one very famous boarder guy (who will go nameless because I don’t know if he was involved in this). I do know that we’ve had some pretty hairy things happening as people want to jump off avy barriers (like several broken femurs, and lots of slides that fortunately haven’t killed anybody yet). Bad press, kids! Don’t be them bad foreigners doing thoughtless things in the backcountry. Good snow today, by the way. • Niseko Now: Wednesday 28th January 2026

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 8cm Snowfall at base this season 668cm Good morning from Niseko. It is a lovely morning with some blue sky and sunshine. With more fresh snow again, it should be a very fine morning and no doubt a lot of people are thinking exactly the same thing. It feels like quite a long time ago when the new snowfall I report was 'just' a single digit. 豪華 I'm hoping that I can report at least some fresh snow in every report through until the 31st (and beyond of course). Tomorrow might be a broken link in the chain. Whatever, putting together my monthly recap in a few days time is going to be fun! Talking of which, I have some very important things to do... got to go... :) ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -8℃, 7cm snowfall, calm. Sea of Japan Benkei cape N9m/s, Kamui cape E3m/s, 1012hPa. Do not enter the recently designated restricted area Anbetsu. Yesterday, over 30 people entered the area, likely because ski lines are shown on map apps, and many received warnings. Please understand that this restriction is an unavoidable measure to prevent fatal accidents. Based on morning observations and data review, the general avalanche risk remains low. Avalanches are natural phenomena; accidents are caused by humans. There are no accidents due to force majeure; accidents can be prevented if everyone exercises caution. Most avalanche accidents occur during blizzards or other severe weather. Leeward slopes during snowstorms are avalanche nests; recognizing this as common sense can reduce accidents. All gates will be open. Follow the patrol’s instructions. Remember, this is a ski resort. Guests must follow the rules. Be alert for sudden weather changes. • Niseko Now: Tuesday 27th January 2026

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 16cm Snowfall at base this season 660cm We enjoyed another day of fresh snow delivery yesterday and this morning I can add another 16cm. Don't get bored of this, now. It can't last forever! All the more reason why we should make the most of it and... kansha. Should be another day of very fine conditions on the mountain, with hopefully not much wind. Visibility seems fine and is fairly good around base and quite bright, but the Hirafu webcam higher up shows much more limited. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -9℃, 15cm snowfall overnight. Moiwa 800m: -11.0℃, snowdrift development stabilised, 20cm new snow. Annupuri 1100m: -12.5℃, data n/a. Village 1000m: -12.3℃, WNW2.1m/s, calm. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -11.8℃, SSW1.9m/s, 10cm snowfall overnight, calm. Hanazono 800m: -10.4℃, SSW3.3m/s, 20cm snowfall. Sea of Japan Benkei cape S4m/s, Kamui cape W5m/s, 10137hPa, 1.0m waves. Across the entire low-pressure system, isobars are widely spread, resulting in calm conditions both at sea and in the mountains. Snowfall consists of light, crystal snow totaling 10-20 cm by morning. Wind-generated snow slabs from previous days are consolidated and stabilised beneath the new snow, sintered like marble, with no weak-line fractures. Based on observations and evaluation of all data, the overall avalanche risk is low. Light slough (powder snow avalanche) is likely on open, steep slopes above the tree line. Stay clear of the slope base as this can trigger surface avalanches. All peak gates will open. Follow the patrol’s instructions. Group leaders bear significant responsibility. Do not casually take beginners to challenging slopes such as back bowls. There is no such thing as a safe winter mountain. Are you prepared for self-rescue? The day before yesterday, Team Leader Kanazawa of the Hirafu Patrol fractured his tibia during work. We wish him a speedy recovery. The snow is fantastic. Keep your avalanche beacon turned on. Be alert for sudden weather changes. Have a good day. ------------------------------------ The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Good Morning Skiers & Boarders! BEAUTIFUL day today here in Furano. While Sapporo, only 2 hours away, was getting slammed the last few days, we've been enjoying sunny, blue skies. Of course, we would have appreciated the snow, but you can't always get what you want. We DID get a very fluffy 4 cm overnight. You could literally blow it off your car. It'll warm up to a positively balmy -4 C today, a huge difference from the recent cold snap. STILL no snow on the horizon, so enjoy the blueness, work on your tan, work on your carving turns, and have a great day! But...as always... • Yuzawa Now: Friday 10th May 2013

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 762cm Weather overview Cloud, fine Wind Light to moderate Temperature 20C base / 10C top Visibility Good Posted at 9:05am on Friday 10th May 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Yesterday was the hottest day of the year so far and more like the kind of temperatures we expect in early May. It was up to around 26 degrees in Yuzawa, at town level, and we are likely to see temps rising to about 25 today as well. It stayed fairly mild overnight, unlike the previous night when it was much colder, so there have been some big swings in the temperatures over the last few days. Tomorrow the forecast is for cooler weather - and rain too. Clearer on Sunday. The Mitsumata area of Kagura remains skiable for the weekend so no need for any kind of shuttle bus up there yet. It will be a busy weekend at Kagura. If you plan to make your way up there, an early start is recommended! The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Yuzawa. Yesterday was a fine morning at least as things did cloud over and by evening it was raining, and it's still raining this morning though will hopefully clear up. After the warmth of yesterday as well it's rather cold this morning and the forecast is telling us that it probably won't warm up over 8 degrees today. Very odd weather recently - it was on the tv this morning that in some regions of Japan it was close to 30 degrees, while it was still snowing up in some parts of Hokkaido! Hopefully we'll see the sun and it will warm up a bit more tomorrow. So from today, it's just Kagura via Mitsumata that remains open. We have posted the below information on the Naeba Now page, but I'll put it on here as well: Mitsumata Ropeway 8am until 5pm (7:30am start on Saturdays and holidays) Mitsumata Number 1 quad 8am until 4:30am (7:30am start on Saturdays and holidays) Mitsumata Number 2 Romance lift 9am until 4:30pm (8:30am start on Saturdays and holidays) Mitsumata Number 3 Romance lift Operating only on Saturdays and holidays when busy conditions Kagura Gondola 8:15am until 4pm (7:45am start on Saturdays and holidays) Kagura Number 1 quad 8:30am until 4pm (8am start on Saturdays and holidays) Kagura Number 1 pair 9am until 4pm on Saturdays and holidays Kagura Number 3 pair Operating only on Saturdays and holidays when busy conditions Yuzawa Now 2012-2013 season Data as of Tuesday 7th May 2013 Total snowfall at base so far 762cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 60 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 45cm (10th December) November 2012 snowfall 8cm reported on 3 days December 2012 snowfall 217cm reported on 15 days January 2013 snowfall 254cm reported on 19 days February 2013 snowfall 238cm reported on 16 days March 2013 snowfall 42cm reported on 6 days April 2013 snowfall 3cm reported on 1 day May 2013 snowfall 0cm Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa.
