The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Good Morning Skiers & Boarders, Welcome to Spring Skiing, according to the official announcement from the Prince Resort. While completely ignoring the recent nice weather, it does mean cheaper lift tickets and a revised lift operation schedule beginning today. The weather today is a bit gray and windy, not exactly pleasant, but hey, you do you. Yesterday was the last day of operations for the Kitanomine Zone. The Furano Zone half of the mountain will continue operation thru the end of Golden Week, depending on the weather. Lift Notes: Lift operations are a standardized 9-4. The snow escalator has magically been repaired. The Furano Quad (Lift B) has been closed for the season. I think we've seen the end of snowfall in town for the season, but we may still have the odd storm or 3 pass thru depositing some snow up on top. It is the mountains, after all. Lots of cloud around this morning with some limited blue sky. Not as windy this morning, thankfully, and lifts should be opening as planned this morning. Today is the last night of evening skiing. (See what I did there?). ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base 6am: -1℃, no new snow. Moiwa 800m: -2.8℃, WNW2.4m/s. Annupuri 1100m: -4.5℃, WSW5.2m/s. Village 1000m: -3.6℃, SW3.0m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -4.1℃, N4.2m/s. Hanazono 800m: –1.0℃, NNE2.8m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape WNW9m/s, Kamui Cape SW13m/s, 1020hPa, wave n/a. All peak gates are expected to be open. The snow accumulation from the blizzard two days ago has consolidated and stabilized over time, reducing the risk of surface avalanches. However, cracks are present in some areas. Avoid being in the bottom of gullies and valleys to decrease the risk of getting caught in a full-depth avalanche. The BCA beacon checker at the gates only responds to beacons. Smartphones, lift tickets, credit cards, and Recco cannot be used. Cracks are hidden by fresh snow and are often not visible from above. Falling into one headfirst is dangerous. Never ski in the restricted areas designated by Niseko Rules: Harunotaki, Yunosawa and Anbetsu Valley, or the closed area Mizunosawa. In Yunosawa, a Russian boy was caught in an avalanche from the side wall at this time of year. He was not found until June. Carrying an avalanche beacon is strongly recommended in Niseko. It can save the lives of your companions. We have some more fresh snow, and it is quite cold. After this overnight snow and some strong blowy winds, it's great to see a fresh layer out there with ski areas reporting up 10-15cm on the mountain. Sounds good, and it is certainly a very nice bonus for the weekend. It felt really windy when I was outside a while ago, and the wind blowing the snow around means it's a bit hard to pin down a number this morning. I have 5cm at my trusted spot. It's still windy but at least visibility is pretty good with some blue sky and sun. At the start of the day, at least top lifts are on hold. The Hirafu gondolas and Hanazono gondola appears to be opening and operating at reduced speed. Village and Annupuri gondolas are on hold. Take care out there. (Even Niseko Village is reporting some fresh snow this morning, 4-5cm, taking their season total reported snowfall up to about 50cm or maybe 40cm!!! I wish I had kept a tally!) ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base 6am: -5℃, stormy, snowdrift development. Moiwa 800m: -7.2℃, NNW17.6m/s, major cornice and snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: -10.3℃, W9.6m/s. Village 1000m: -8.6℃, NNW8.7m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -9.8℃, N10.7m/s. Hanazono 800m: -6.4℃, NNE8.3m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape NNW15m/s, Kamui Cape NW13m/s, 1012hPa, wave n/a. At around midnight the wind direction changed, with continuing heavy blizzard conditions above 800m. There is also significant ongoing cornice and snowdrift development. From observations and data, the avalanche risk today is VERY HIGH. All gates will be closed. Caution is also needed on all the surrounding mountains as well. Accidents tend to occur during bad weather. The risk will continue until the snowdrifts stabilize. It is best to avoid leeward valleys today, and wait until the wind drops to at least 10 m/s or less. Blizzards create heavy snow that is prone to avalanches. Are you familiar with weak line breaks? I strongly recommend carrying a beacon. Good morning skiers & boarders, Well, the faithful who remained until the end of the Kitanomine season have been rewarded with 10-15 cm of fresh snow overnight. It is surprisingly light for this time of year, and a fun way to wrap up the season. While tomorrow, Sunday, March 22 will be the last day of the season for the Kitanomine side of the mountain, the Furano side of the resort will remain open thru Golden Week, conditions permitting. The lower lifts will close in a few weeks, and folks will ride the Ropeway to ski on the upper lifts. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . We got some fresh snow down to base! Great to see a modest layer this morning and everywhere has a fresh coat of white. The ski area is actually reporting 15cm of snow from upper areas. Wonderful. (Not as much as that down at base, but still a layer on the ground). It is windy, though, so a real winter feel to proceedings this morning. Fingers crossed lifts won't be affected. I wonder if this will be the last snow of the season or not. We have had a bonus delivery of fresh snow, yey! I notice the Avalanche Report mentioning about 10cm at 700m. Not as much as that down lower, but at least I can add a bit to my report this morning. It is a very good morning to investigate, and investigate I will. The sun is out and it has been quite chilly this morning. It's looking kind of hazy over towards the lovely Mt Yotei (for now, at least). I wonder if we might get some more snow by tomorrow... exciting. :) ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base 6am: -3℃, 5cm new snow, calm. Moiwa 800m: -5.6℃, WNW5.0m/s, cornice development. Annupuri 1100m: -8.3℃, WNW3.9m/s, cornice and snowdrift development. Village 1000m: -6.9℃, NNW2.0m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -7.9℃, N4.1m/s. Hanazono 800m: -4.7℃, NNE2.4m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape NNW8m/s, Kamui Cape WNW4m/s, 1013hPa, wave n/a. Yesterday afternoon’s snowfall was moderately heavy, about 10cm at 700m. Then strong winds overnight then developed shallow drifts. Since it’s fresh snow, all gates are expected to open. However, the weather will rapidly deteriorate in the afternoon and the gates will close early to prevent accidents. Please follow patrol instructions. The risk of full-depth avalanches remains high. Do not stop in the valley bottom. I recently received a doctoral thesis focusing on the Niseko Rules. The paper mainly compares Europe and Japan, and is based on interviews with stakeholders as well as surveys of users. However, I am concerned that in many respects the background behind how these rules were created has been misunderstood, and above all, oversimplified. Once something is written, it can take on a life of its own. The opinions of researchers—and their influence—are significant, especially when amplified by the media. This thesis seems to lack an understanding that the Niseko Rules were born out of necessity, and that they were designed to balance two opposing goals: respecting freedom on the slopes while also preventing accidents.
