Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 40cm Snowfall at base this season 639cm Posted on Friday 2nd January 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . There has been lots more snow fall over the region since my report yesterday morning. The snow depths may not change much (or change at all in the case of Kagura) but resorts report 30-50cm fresh since yesterday and the snow on my car tells the story too. It has really been coming down at times! While there was a bit of a break in the snow earlier on this morning when I first got up, it's back again now and the forecast remains for snow to continue falling today and also into tomorrow as well. How's that for a snowy start to the year? Somewhat clearer and milder conditions due around Sunday. --- Official snow depths: GALA Yuzawa: 270cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 260cm Iwappara: 210cm Joetsu Kokusai: 190cm Kagura: 250cm Kandatsu Kogen: 260cm Maiko Snow Resort: 260cm Naeba: 210cm NASPA Ski Garden: 245cm Yuzawa Kogen: 240cm (Kogen) 190cm (Nunoba) Yuzawa Nakazato: 190cm Yuzawa Now 2014-2015 season Data as of Friday 2nd January 2015 Total snowfall at base so far 639cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 18 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 100cm (15th December) November 2014 snowfall 0cm December 2014 snowfall 559cm reported on 16 days January 2015 snowfall 80cm reported on 2 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 25cm Snowfall at base this season 799cm Posted on Saturday 10th January 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Welcome to the long weekend! With Monday a holiday here in Japan, it's one of the main weekends of the season and so places expect to see quite a few people turn up. So what's it going to be like? Snowy by the looks. Back to yesterday and we had snowfall through most of the day, though it was pretty weak at times and we even had a few bits of sun and blue sky show through - but it was always short-lived. Conditions out on the slopes was great though. Really very nice. By evening it was back to at times heavy snow and this morning I have 25cm of new snow to report from outside the building here. Maiko Snow Resort reports about 20cm. Kagura reports 20cm. Naeba reports 3-10cm. No other specific numbers on offer that I can find early on. It's snowing still and forecast to for the day today and tomorrow too. So snow conditions should be excellent pretty much everywhere in the area. Visibility less so. A moderate wind at times maybe but all resorts are set to open as planned and it's not that cold. It's one of the things lots of people like about this area - huges amounts of snow, but we don't get the crazy cold temperatures that some other regions get. --- I was just looking back at the reports from last season. (You can find them in all the archive reports below). As of 10th January 2014, we had observed 208cm of snowfall around town here. Today, that same statistic stands at a whopping 794cm. Nearly 4 times as much. I don't THINK there's a mistake in the automatic calculations there (!), but while we are quite obviously getting a lot more snow fall this year than last, even I'm surprised at that number. Worth noting that those observed numbers are posted by the same person from exactly the same place, so there's no change there. Have a great weekend. --- Official snow depths: GALA Yuzawa: 370cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 320cm Iwappara: 245cm Joetsu Kokusai: 200cm Kagura: 300cm Kandatsu Kogen: 280cm Maiko Snow Resort: 290cm Naeba: 230cm NASPA Ski Garden: 278cm Yuzawa Kogen: 270cm (Kogen) 220cm (Nunoba) Yuzawa Nakazato: 210cm --- Nighta in the area Nighta 'night skiing' - where some slopes are floodlit for skiing and snowboarding in the evening, is available at the following resorts in the area. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 30cm Snowfall at base this season 854cm Posted on Monday 12th January 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . A later report this morning... snow clearing was necessary. It was snowing for most of the day yesterday, though weaker at times, but we were back to heavier snowfall in the evening and this morning there is another 30cm of fresh snow to report. My observation - 30cm Maiko Snow Resort - 20cm Kagura - 30-40cm Naeba - 30-50cm Some resorts were really very busy yesterday. I tried to get to Maiko late morning but couldn't get there, the car park was full! There were actually cars waiting in line for people to leave before they could enter. Smaller resorts were getting some people due to that overflow. Totally personal opninion here, but snow conditions were not quite as good as I was expecting - heavier than I was hoping for. Looks like lighter snow overnight though so I would imagine that conditions are very good this morning. I have no doubt that higher places are totally coming up with the goods though just now. Well, when they'll open. Unfortunately Tashiro is closed today due to strong winds and it looks like early morning via Mitsumata it's open up until the Kagura Number 1 Romance pair lift. They seem to be saying that the quad may open depending on conditions. Yesterday I said that the rest of this week we should see lots of sunshine. Current forecasts are disagreeing a bit on that front with some saying more a mix of cloud and even a bit of rain. No, please just no! I think most people now would like a bit of a break from the snow and a few days of fine and clear skies with some sunshine. --- Official snow depths: GALA Yuzawa: 390cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 340cm Iwappara: 260cm Joetsu Kokusai: 230cm Kagura: 300cm Kandatsu Kogen: 300cm Maiko Snow Resort: 330cm Naeba: 250cm NASPA Ski Garden: 303cm Yuzawa Kogen: 290cm (Kogen) 240cm (Nunoba) Yuzawa Nakazato: 220cm Yuzawa Now 2014-2015 season Data as of Monday 12th January 2015 Total snowfall at base so far 854cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 26 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 100cm (15th December) November 2014 snowfall 0cm December 2014 snowfall 559cm reported on 16 days January 2015 snowfall 295cm reported on 10 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 20cm Snowfall at base this season 874cm Posted on Tuesday 13th January 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . It kept on snowing yesterday with most people now asking 'when is this going to stop'? 10cm on top of the car this morning but I moved off 10-15cm last night that had fallen during the day, so it's another 20-25cm since my report yesterday morning. Very fine light snow is falling right now, but it is due to ease off sometime this morning (at last!) leaving us with a cloudy afternoon. Maybe a chance of some sunshine perhaps? Would be nice. Even if we don't get that today, currently the forecast for Wednesday is clear and sunny skies and mild conditions too with temperatures rising to around +5C. High of +3C expected today, and for now it's hanging around 0C. The 3m solid wall of snow around the building here tells me that we're not going to be worrying about snow base this season! Just regular top-ups now please. (But keep them regular). All resorts around town will be open and primed for tracks. Some people ask how come there's so much snow every day but the snow depth numbers are resorts don't increase (or don't increase much)? Probably a variety of reasons including snow getting compacted, melting (when conditions are warmer) and quite possibly some resorts almost wanting to under-report when there's lots of snow. Mentioned this before but as hard as it might be to believe, when there's news of really heavy snowfall some people get put off. --- Official snow depths: GALA Yuzawa: 390cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 350cm Iwappara: 270cm Joetsu Kokusai: 230cm Kagura: 300cm Kandatsu Kogen: 310cm Maiko Snow Resort: 340cm (upper) 260cm (lower) Naeba: 250cm NASPA Ski Garden: 303cm Yuzawa Kogen: 290cm (Kogen) 240cm (Nunoba) Yuzawa Nakazato: 225cm Yuzawa Now 2014-2015 season Data as of Tuesday 13th January 2015 Total snowfall at base so far 874cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 27 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 100cm (15th December) November 2014 snowfall 0cm December 2014 snowfall 559cm reported on 16 days January 2015 snowfall 315cm reported on 11 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 30cm Snowfall at base this season 914cm Posted on Sunday 18th January 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Snowfall for the day yesterday along with some real blowy northerly winds as well, quite strong at times. I actually had a day in Nagaoka city yesterday so I don't know for sure but would imagine that the wind might have messed around with some lifts other than just those at Kagura. It's not as windy this morning but snow is still falling. How much snow? Well, yesterday evening there had been about 20cm during the daytime and this morning there's another 10-15cm so I'm calling 30-35cm of fresh snowfall since my report yesterday. Kagura are reporting 40-50cm fresh snow this morning; Naeba report 20-50cm; Maiko Snow Resort report 30cm. Unfortunately, wind is still affecting the Kagura resort with only from the Mitsumata Ropeway to the Kagura Gondola area open at the beginning of the day - they leave the chance of more of the areas opening if the winds ease off. There might be a chance of that though as come this afternoon the snow is forecast to ease leaving us with just cloudy conditions (perhaps even a bit of sun, he says hopefully), and calmer conditions. So there's another decent amount of fresh snow on the slopes of all the resorts to play in today. Should be a good one, especially if it clears up sooner than later. The forecast for tomorrow is cloud and snow showers at times. --- Official snow depths (some not updated today due to early report): GALA Yuzawa: 380cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 350cm Iwappara: 270cm Joetsu Kokusai: 230cm Kagura: 320cm Kandatsu Kogen: 310cm Maiko Snow Resort: 340cm (upper) 270cm (lower) Naeba: 250cm NASPA Ski Garden: 288cm Yuzawa Kogen: 300cm (Kogen) 250cm (Nunoba) Yuzawa Nakazato: 220cm Yuzawa Now 2014-2015 season Data as of Sunday 18th January 2015 Total snowfall at base so far 914cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 30 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 100cm (15th December) November 2014 snowfall 0cm December 2014 snowfall 559cm reported on 16 days January 2015 snowfall 355cm reported on 14 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 879cm Posted on Friday 16th January 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . It's another cloudy morning here. Yesterday afternoon it did start... snowing. Very wet snow, sleety snow, but not much later after it started there was a thin layer of white on the ground once again. It continued overnight by the looks and there's just over 5cm on the top of my car this morning. It's far from being the driest powder, for sure, but better than rain! I would expect better conditions the higher you go this morning. Maiko reports just a bit of snow, Naeba reports 5-10cm and Kagura is reporting 10-15cm this morning. So I'd say dusting-5cm at lower areas and up to 15cm higher up. So it's cloudy and grey to start the day off, but a few small signs to the north that in places it might just clear a bit. False alarms perhaps, and indeed the forecast is for cloudy conditions for today and temperatures to remain around 1C or 2C. Naeba seem to be saying there's moderate wind at summit over there, but not affecting lifts. All resorts appear to be opening as normal. Snowfall is expected again before the day ends and overnight into tomorrow. It should be getting colder as well tomorrow and with a potentially decent amount to fall conditions should be good tomorrow morning. --- Official snow depths (some not updated today due to early report): GALA Yuzawa: 380cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 320cm Iwappara: 245cm Joetsu Kokusai: 230cm Kagura: 300cm Kandatsu Kogen: 230cm Maiko Snow Resort: 315cm (upper) 230cm (lower) Naeba: 250cm NASPA Ski Garden: 303cm Yuzawa Kogen: 290cm (Kogen) 240cm (Nunoba) Yuzawa Nakazato: 215cm Yuzawa Now 2014-2015 season Data as of Friday 16th January 2015 Total snowfall at base so far 879cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 28 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 100cm (15th December) November 2014 snowfall 0cm December 2014 snowfall 559cm reported on 16 days January 2015 snowfall 320cm reported on 12 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Cloud did clear at times yesterday leaving us with periods of blue sky and sunshine, but the cloud was never far away and fairly quickly moving back in. It just doesn't seem to want to be clear for a day this season! This morning lots of cloud up above and we have had a bit of snowfall overnight. There's about 4cm on the top of my car and both Maiko Snow Resort and Kagura reporting 10cm. Some good fast conditions yesterday so a new layer and continued cold should keep things in decent condition. Snowfall is actually forecast for the day, but it's weak just at the moment. Looking to the upcoming weekend we are expecting some fine weather conditions tomorrow and perhaps the sun out, and slightly warmer conditions with a high of around +4C down at town level. From later on in the day on Sunday the next big delivery of snow is lining up with some expected moderate to heavy snow going into Monday. That should give everywhere a good decent refresh. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 35cm Snowfall at base this season 1034cm Posted on Monday 2nd February 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Another 20cm or so of snowfall during the day yesterday, and 15cm to move again this morning - so around 35cm fresh snow since my report yesterday once again. That takes us to over 10m of snowfall observed here at town level since the beginning of the season. Impressive! (Kagura only reporting 20cm this morning but I suspect that's just not including snow that fell yesterday. I can't make that number up though... so 20cm it is. Other confirmed number this morning is 20-30cm of fresh at Maiko). Was rather windy as well for parts of yesterday, and it looks like wind is still with us this morning with the Tashiro area of Kagura once again closed this morning and only part of the main Kagura area open. Once that area finally gets opened up again, there's going to be some amazing untouched conditions up there to enjoy. Tomorrow perhaps? It's good to see that Gala Yuzawa is able to keep open through stronger wind conditions these days as well. OK so back down here and it's moderate snowfall still with a moderate wind and limited visibility. Expecting the snowfall to get less later on in the day with cloud and possible snow showers at times tomorrow. Not a whole lot of clear weather forecast for the coming week - there looks like more of a chance of more snow on the way. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 1044cm Posted on Tuesday 3rd February 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from the Yuzawa area where we still have snow clouds up above. It's not actually snowing just now, but light snow is expected during the day today. There's 10cm on the top of my car, fallen from the skies since yesterday day time and the snow walls around town are now once again looking refreshed and - high! Someone pointed this out yesterday... official snow depths for resorts have many with more than Kagura which we always expect to have the most. Whether lower down actually has had more or not is certainly open for question - especially when we remember that official snow depths at Kagura often don't budge even when they get 40cm for a few days in a row! Sometimes you feel certain resorts actually downplay the amount of snow. Having said that, and just an observation, but I feel there's more snow piled up on the side of the roads in the Shiozawa and Muikamachi area than there is in Yuzawa. Still huge amounts everywhere of course at the moment... OK so it's -2 degrees at the moment. Lots of fresh snow, should be excellent conditions everywhere right now. Forecasts disagree on what we have in store after tomorrow - clearer weather on Thursday, or rain? I know which I'd prefer. --- Official snow depths: GALA Yuzawa: 440cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 370cm Iwappara: 290cm Joetsu Kokusai: 230cm Kagura: 340cm Kandatsu Kogen: 360cm Maiko Snow Resort: 380cm (upper) 300cm (lower) Naeba: 260cm NASPA Ski Garden: 365cm Yuzawa Kogen: 320cm (Kogen) 260cm (Nunoba) Yuzawa Nakazato: 230cm Yuzawa Now 2014-2015 season Data as of Tuesday 3rd February 2015 Total snowfall at base so far 1044cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 41 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 100cm (15th December) November 2014 snowfall 0cm December 2014 snowfall 559cm reported on 16 days January 2015 snowfall 420cm reported on 22 days February 2015 snowfall 65cm reported on 3 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Slightly over 30cm on the top of my car overnight and blue skies above us for first lifts... sounds almost perfect! Surprisingly we do have bright and sunny skies above right now - snow is forecast for the day and you can see the clouds to the north of Minamiuonuma... will they roll in as forecast or will we get to enjoy some clear conditions at least for a bit this morning? Yesterday we also had a few times when there were clearings in the clouds above, but snow moved on back in. Not a whole lot during the day though really, the snow that I report is pretty much all from overnight. Maiko Snow Resort is reporting 40cm... with Kagura and Naeba both reporting 10-20cm. So it looks like we may have got more down here again. I don't know if it's really worth looking at the forecast with what's happening now, but it's snowfall for the day today (!) and into tomorrow, easing off in the morning. First tracks this morning should be excellent. --- Official snow depths: GALA Yuzawa: 460cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 400cm Iwappara: 265cm Joetsu Kokusai: 280cm Kagura: 350cm Kandatsu Kogen: 390cm Maiko Snow Resort: 390cm (upper) 300cm (lower) Naeba: 270cm NASPA Ski Garden: 355cm Yuzawa Kogen: 360cm (Kogen) 300cm (Nunoba) Yuzawa Nakazato: 245cm Yuzawa Now 2014-2015 season Data as of Tuesday 10th February 2015 Total snowfall at base so far 1103cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 46 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 100cm (15th December) November 2014 snowfall 0cm December 2014 snowfall 559cm reported on 16 days January 2015 snowfall 420cm reported on 22 days February 2015 snowfall 124cm reported on 8 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. - Yuzawa Now: Monday 9th February 2015
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 20cm Snowfall at base this season 1073cm Posted on Monday 9th February 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Guess what... it ended up overcast and cloudy again yesterday! Another very busy day out there by the looks, and happily the rain waited until late on to start. Then it turned into snow. This morning at my place here in Minamiuonuma, there's 35cm of snow on the top of my car. Seems we generally got more than Yuzawa as my colleague has just called with his observation of 20cm. Maiko Snow Resort nearby is saying 20-30cm, as is Kagura higher up. So 20cm goes on the report (but there's definitely 35cm on my car!) Snow forecast all day today along with moderate wind, but all resorts are going to be open as normal. Kagura are not posting any wind-affected news just yet anyway. Snow forecast for tomorrow too with some forecasts giving us a bit of a break from it around Wednesday - before a return to snow late week. Limited visibility and colder than the weekend. Currently -4C in town. It's going to be fresh out there! --- Official snow depths: GALA Yuzawa: 440cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 380cm Iwappara: 260cm Joetsu Kokusai: 270cm Kagura: 340cm Kandatsu Kogen: 380cm Maiko Snow Resort: 360cm (upper) 300cm (lower) Naeba: 260cm NASPA Ski Garden: 340cm Yuzawa Kogen: 340cm (Kogen) 280cm (Nunoba) Yuzawa Nakazato: 240cm Yuzawa Now 2014-2015 season Data as of Monday 9th February 2015 Total snowfall at base so far 1073cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 45 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 100cm (15th December) November 2014 snowfall 0cm December 2014 snowfall 559cm reported on 16 days January 2015 snowfall 420cm reported on 22 days February 2015 snowfall 94cm reported on 7 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. - Yuzawa Now: Wednesday 4th February 2015
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 1046cm Posted on Wednesday 4th February 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Light snow on and off during the day yesterday, but not much in terms of new cm... 2cm actually here, and right now very light snow is lazily falling from the sky with the forecsst for the day being just cloudy conditions and more of the same tomorrow as well. It feels and looks like it might clear up and be quite bright today actually. Not a whole lot of snow forecast until Sunday really going into early next week. Temperatures should remain generally low though and so snow conditions should keep good. Below are two photos taken yesterday in the Ishiuchi area just to the north of Yuzawa, some of those impressive walls of snow on the side of the roads. Fairly typical scenes at the moment. --- Official snow depths: GALA Yuzawa: 460cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 380cm Iwappara: 295cm Joetsu Kokusai: 270cm Kagura: 340cm Kandatsu Kogen: 370cm Maiko Snow Resort: 380cm (upper) 300cm (lower) Naeba: 260cm NASPA Ski Garden: 370cm Yuzawa Kogen: 320cm (Kogen) 260cm (Nunoba) Yuzawa Nakazato: 230cm Yuzawa Now 2014-2015 season Data as of Wednesday 4th February 2015 Total snowfall at base so far 1046cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 42 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 100cm (15th December) November 2014 snowfall 0cm December 2014 snowfall 559cm reported on 16 days January 2015 snowfall 420cm reported on 22 days February 2015 snowfall 67cm reported on 4 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa.
