The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. And it is indeed. With just under 15cm of new snow since my last report and more on the way, people are feeling positive (and positively excite). Who said Mondays were rubbish? As the snow continues to be delivered, there are some changes to ski area operations this morning, so I'll try to cover them: Hanazono is planning on opening in style this morning with all four lifts scheduled to be open. (Some blowy winds might slightly spoil the party there, so keep an eye on that). Hirafu is making some changes with the higher Center course now open, and the Ace Number 2 center quad and Ace Number 3 pair lifts moving. The former is a connecting lift to get to the Center course. They say that the lower Family course is still skiable, but the ski lift by the course is not open. Good exercise, perhaps. Annupuri, Village and Hanazono are all now open until 4:00pm too. (The base Dream lift at Annupuri is open until 4:30pm). And Moiwa plan to have their quad lift opening from this coming Saturday. Oh, and there's this too... ---------- A message from SnowJapan: loading speeds You might have noticed that the daily reports are suddenly loading much faster. And you would be right, as we have made some changes! It's complicated, but until yesterday, every time you visited a report, it was reading and loading a large amount of data. The changes we have made take out much of that loading requirement, allowing each report to be displayed faster. The change means that, for the moment, the Back and Next links on each report are no longer displayed. We hope that will be a temporary change as we try to find a more efficient way to display those links. However, you can still easily view the previous report using the links in the Previous 7 reports section (below), which remains on every report. (The latest and all archived reports). Coastal data: Benkei cape NW20m/s, Kamui cape W14m/s, 1020hPa, 2.9m waves. The wintery pressure distribution continues. Cornices and snowdrifts are developing above 600m elevation. Intermittent heavy snowfall at the base. The snowdrifts developments are uneven due to inconsistent wind, delaying the stabilization of the snowpack. The leeward cornices’ thickness at 800m elevation have reached 40-60cm and are likely to collapse. The avalanche risk is high today. People headed out to the backcountry beware. Many of the avalanche accidents occur during snowstorms. The snowpack is still shallow, the courses’ pitch is uneven and the light is weak. Please be careful riding. One injury could ruin your season. Cold enough for machines to be pumping out snow in places as supplement the very limited natural snowfall (just another dusting to report). It was snowing yesterday but didn't really stick much. Around 20cm of new snowfall down low and over 25cm being reported by the ski area. It's cloudy now with some light snow possibly during the day. Still not enough to open but good to see a decent layer out there. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I have more gore good news this morning with just under 20cm of new snow to report since yesterday. It did actually feel relatively mild later in the day yesterday, but even so we still got the goodies... and there's more to come. Continued snowfall is on the forecast and it feels pretty cold again this morning. Niseko Grand Hirafu opens from this morning with the base Ace Family Quad joining in the fun. So only Hanazono (and the small Asahigaoka) are not open, with operations limited to lower areas. If we do get that regular snowfall shown on forecasts over the coming days, we can probably expect more to be opening up quite quickly. A few things: The early season can sometimes be a mad rush of information that changes by the hour (or minute). I am going to do my best to bring you as much good and correct information each morning. Please remember that things can change quickly. And also that I am not perfect (even with all the toast I eat). It's also important to remember that I am not here to create hype and sell you on Niseko; I am simply here to tell you what is happening. Snowfall numbers that are reported by the ski areas - as I post them below - sometimes seem wonky and do not seem to add up. Frustrating? For sure! But think of it as just part of the, er, 'fun'. I recommend pinches of salt and not losing sleep over it. A shout out and sincere thanks to the good people responsible for the Niseko Avalanche Report, and everyone involved in getting our mountain up and running too. Winter type weather pattern. Mountain data not available. We are in a typical winter weather pattern with blizzards on the seas and mountains. Although there is only a small amount of snow, there has been snow drift development on leeward slopes below 800m. From data and snowfall transition there is a risk of avalanches on SE faces around 800m due to snow drifts fracturing. Avoid SE faces, cornices and knolls above 900m. There isn't much snow yet, be careful on uneven terrain. Also the poor light today doesn't help. Gates are not open yet. Please respect and follow Niseko Rules. Snow has made it down to the base level; it's melted since then, so I almost forgot to put up a weekend/new week report as we get closer to official opening dates. The first snowfall below the ski area; always fun (and exciting with some last-minute prep always needed, for me tire chains on a front loader) but we also know that the early season snow really doesn't mean much. I've said it before, but there are many years when we wonder if we'll even get a white Christmas, and then the snow really starts falling and everything is buried again. I will say that we haven't had the heavy, limb-breaking November snows that I remember from past decades. That early snow helped get things done, though. Lots of panicked mounting of snow tires, a sudden blooming of road-marking bamboo wands, that kind of thing. The snow will come, that is the main thing. OK, so when will the resorts open? They have been pretty optimistic in recent years. The official ski jo biraki (ski area opening ceremony) was held on the first; I will say that a manager from one of the resorts admitted that, looking at the long-term forecast, it was highly unlikely that the mid-December opener would happen. We can wait for the good, natural snow (we don't need no stinking snow-making guns in Myoko!). The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Furano Ski Area is now open! Today is the start of the ski season in Furano. There has been 14cm of snow overnight and it is currently snowing moderately. The temperature is -4c and the high will stay just under freezing at -1c. Lift operations are limited. The open lift is the Prince Romance lift (double chair) at the base of Shin Furano Prince Hotel. This will give access to a beginner course of approximately 700m. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here First of all, fresh snowfall. Another 12cm since yesterday. Nice. It's Saturday 3rd December and the first official day of the Niseko ski season for three of the ski areas here. There's still not a huge amount of snow around and so operations are limited to only some lower areas, and Niseko Grand Hirafu and Hanazono have decided to sit out today. Regular snow is still on the forecasts over the coming days and so hopefully we can expect things to expand quite quickly. Anyway, four ski lifts are scheduled to be open from this morning, all servicing limited lower slopes at the respective ski area. Niseko Annupuri: Dream Number 1 quad (9:00am-3:30pm) Niseko Village: Community Chair and Banzai Chair (8:30am-3:30pm) Niseko Moiwa: Number 1 pair (8:30am-3:30pm) Cheaper lift tickets are generally available until 16th December. However, due to the limited operations, a ticket today for Annupuri is a specially cheap 2,700 yen. (I cannot find such information for Village and Moiwa this morning. The latest Geto Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Geto Kogen. It has been a fine morning with blue sky and some cloud. There is also a layer of snow on the ground. Yesterday there was over 12cm and 4cm at base since yesterday, with over 20cm being reported by the ski area in higher elevations. It's great to see snow, but it's not enough for the ski area to open. Hopefully there will be more snow tonight and into tomorrow.
