More like 40cm down below... and it is still snowing and should continue until tonight. And some sun tomorrow. This feels very normal for this location. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Another morning that started with real, Myoko-style snow; big flakes coming down nice and steadily. Not a huge fall, and the forecast is that it will taper off around lunchtime, but nice to see. Nice to have the snow continuing, too (OK, one beautiful sunny day in there, but the condition on the hill is so much better than earlier). It was also fun to see real "snowflake" crystals during a snow check. Bigger arms on those little stars means more air, fluffy powder, white smoke (we really need a bit more to enjoy that, but it's the right idea). I'm also pleased to see that, on this slightly late-reporting day, that most of the resorts have updated information for you. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here As of 8:30am I had measured another 24cm of snowfall on top of what we got on the previous report. It is still snowing so there will be more to add tomorrow too. (To be clear: my count is up to 8:30am, any after that will be in the next report). It probably goes without saying but snow conditions are currently, I humbly suggest, fantastic. Unfortunately, yesterday the top lifts were closed and unfortunately they are this morning too (not counting the 'top' lift at Hanazono). Talking of which... Someone asked what that tent-like thingy is that you can see on the webcam close to the lifts at Hanazono. (Sorry, HANAZONO). No, it is not a discount bunk-bed type backpacker accommodation. A bit too posh looking for that, right? It is, in fact, the 'Louis Vuitton Niseko Winter Resort Pop-up Store'. I kid you not. Yet one more fabulous reason to choose Niseko! But don’t go in there expecting to find some toast or onigiri. You’re better off at Seico Mart for those. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Yesterday all that new snowfall allowed the ski area to open up more, including runs that connected the top area with base. At last! (<<< was the feeling). The ski area is not fully open yet, but a large part is now available and there's no need to get a gondola back down from the top areas. Maybe one more good snowfall might fix up the remaining areas. We had light snow during the morning yesterday with about another 5-18cm (base-top) reported by the ski area since early morning. My measurement at base was 4cm. And then, later in the afternoon we were treated to some blue sky and sun. Nice. Today should be a great day to be out on the mountain with clearer skies and sunshine. It is a very cold start but the sun will be mild-ing things up a bit. Currently the next potentially ‘heavy’ snow is forecast for just before the weekend. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. And what a morning it is. This is pretty amazing. Some places on Honshu are known for their 'mad-snow dumpage' at times. Up here, we are used to perhaps less dramatic numbers with more consistency (my opinion, don't shout). But, this morning, I have a Niseko-tastic 62cm of snowfall to report. Off-hand, I can't remember posting that much in any one report before. (Let's checking). It is still snowing, lightly in places and more heavily in others. Visibility also looks quite varied. For example, poor over at Moiwa, but fairly ok at Hanazono. The very heavy snowfall is affecting ski area operations at the normal start of the day. At 8:30am, quite a few lifts are not opening on schedule. I would expect lifts to open up as the ski areas deal with all the new snow. It is a good problem to have. I think I'm going to have some celebratory toast and let things gradually open up before going out. (Funny, on the Niseko United website, Hirafu is reporting 70cm of snowfall at top and, er, 0cm at base. Niseko Village are reporting 0cm at both base and summit). (Actually, not funny). Oh, by the way, I might not be able to post a report early morning tomorrow. Coastal data: Benkei cape N16m/s, Kamui cape N13m/s, 1010hPa, 2.8m waves. Heavy snowfall and strong wind from the coastline. 60-90cm snowfall at the base of Moiwa. 3m cornices and 2m deep snowdrifts at knoll have developed overnight. Looking at all data, the avalanche risk is extremely high in slopes above 900m elevation in Higashi-One, Backbowl, O-sawa (Annupuri bowl), Mikaeri bowl. Beware of slides from side banks of switchback courses and under chairlift. It is highly recommended to stay inbounds today and until the wind calms down and the snowpack stabilises. Do not stay put at the bottom of gullies, avalanches strike from above. Avalanches are a natural phenomenon and are not an accident until somebody is caught in it. Many cars are getting stuck in the deep snow this morning, please adjust your plan to the natural conditions. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . Morning from Naeba. Good news. 45cm of snow and actually more than that in some wind-drift areas (60cm in places). It is quite windy still though only light snow at the moment and fair visibility especially in lower areas. The snow is light and fluffy, exactly how we love it. Upper parts has been wind affected and there might be differences in a snow cover so ride carefully! Some lifts are affected early on as the ski areas works with all the new snow. The Dragondola (and Tashiro Area of Kagura) are also closed for the day due to the weather conditions). ------------------------- Official snow depth: Summit: 50cm (not a big increase considering snowfall!)
