As we approach 8:30am, and after the snowfall that the report below is mentioning earlier, it's quite bright with a lot of cloud around but also some blue sky. The sun is shining through my window as I write this. Oh, and there is some light snow lingering in places too. The Hirafu ski area is reporting 15cm of snowfall on the mountain this morning so sounds like there should be some good snow to find. Hopefully we will still get further cm to give us a nice new layer tomorrow, though it doesn't look to be massive. I'm not liking the relatively 'toast-y' temps that look likely to be with us around Tuesday and Wednesday next week, but let's think about that again later. We have a busy weekend to get through! In the meantime, time for some real toast. ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base 6am: -5°, heavy snowfall at dawn, 5cm new snow, calm. Moiwa 800m: -9.4°, NNW8.4m/s(max gust 16m/s), snowdrift development. Mikaeri 764m: -10°, NW10m/s, heavy snowfall at dawn, snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: -1.5°, WNW3.6m/s, trace new snow. Village 1000: -9.0°, WNW1.9m/s. Hanazono 1000m: -10.2°, WNW4.9m/s, trace new snow. Hanazono 3 : -7.8°, NNE2.2m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape:NW10m/s. Kamui Cape NW6m/s, 1018hPa, wave 1.1m. The isobars are wide apart and the Niseko area is calm, however the pressure gradient will steepen bringing intermittent snowstorms on the mountains. From observation and data, although there has been some snowdrift development, the general avalanche risk is low. All gates are expected to be open, talk to the patrol at the gate before exit through the gate. Don't forget your beacon. Although it's not mandatory, it might save you or one of your friends lives. There is a possibility of a 40cm fracture back on Bowl sidewall and the Osawa cornice face. Do not traverse under cornices. Also, don't wait in the valley bottoms, you may be hit by an avalanche. The mountain mostly reset and the snow is good. Avoid multiple riders on the same slope. Don't hit a tree. This information is provided to help prevent accidents in out of bounds areas. This morning is quite cloudy but quite bright too, with some blue sky and sun. And maybe more sun due tomorrow too particularly in the morning. What we all have our eye on is the snow that is forecast for later tomorrow, though we probably shouldn't expect too much. Hopefully, we might get surprised. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It looks like it is trying to be a bit sunny out there today, with some blue patches peeking through a high sky of gray clouds. I would like to say it's nice it's staying cold, because we are below -1° right now, but, man it was warm in the afternoon yesterday, with a high around 6°~7° at the base. Kind of icy/crusty conditions on the surface of the snow, although there will still be nice pockets of fresh on north-facing slopes for those of you heading outside the resorts. Looks to stay cold as we go into the weekend, though, and more snow is forecast, so things look pretty good! I'm too early for the info from the ski area this morning [*updated below] It's a cloudy start to the day with some forecasts telling us to expect some more sun again during the day. Others say just cloud. There are already a few small breaks in the clouds in places, actually. Tomorrow night is still looking good for the chance of some decent snowfall, going through into Sunday morning. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Just a little snowfall to report to you this morning (slightly over 1cm) and this morning is starting overcast with light snow falling. Visibility seems fair to good. I was outside just a short while ago and it didn't feel quite as cold, though it's still well under zero. As I am tying this, it seems like the sun is trying to break through the cloud. That might well be just be a one-off. I believe at the moment and next week there will be many people visiting to celebrate the Chinese New Year... welcome! That, along with the fact that it is peak season and also that Monday is a national holiday in Japan, means that it will no doubt be a very busy weekend. Fresh snow to fill in tracks would be great, but it might be later on Saturday before we receive track-filling numbers. ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 6am: -5℃, 2cm snowfall and calm. Please listen to the ski patrol’s instructions and always be prepared when you go outside the gates. Area outside the gates is not the resort. Niseko opens/closes gates based on the weather data and observations of the morning. Please respect and understand the Niseko rules. Do not ignore the rules and ride in the strictly off-limit areas. We do understand that’s the only area where the fresh snow is, but please respect the rules and do not ride there. Please remember this is a ski resort and if one person sneaks off, others will follow, and eventually it could lead to an accident that may take someone's life. Yesterday 2 riders were captured in the strictly off limit area-Haruno taki. Groomers are in excellent condition this morning. Beware of falling and crashing into trees. You cannot beat trees. A late start today; maybe that's OK, as I don't seem to get good information from our resorts if I'm up early plowing and decide to do a pre-opening report. It's another post-snow sunny day in Myoko; those roads are wet with the melt of the little bit of extra we got through the day yesterday. I wish it would just stay cold, because we're getting a lot of ice with all this melting and refreezing, not only on the roads but also on the slopes. Remember, ice is for cocktails. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . We have had a mostly kind of cloudy morning (with some bright spells), and it is currently just over 0C in the village. We can expect more of the same cloudy conditions this afternoon and perhaps some more sun tomorrow. I can see temps creeping upwards again early in the first part of next week (grrrrrr), though before then there's still that snow forecast around Saturday night. Night skiing is planned for both Saturday and Sunday, as Monday is a national holiday. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here After some more pleasant weather yesterday, this morning we wake to a very nice new layer of snow. Just under 10cm by my measurement. As I write this report it is generally cloudy with light snow falling and visibility looks fairly decent. It looks like the next few days will be a mix of cloud, light snow and perhaps some clearer skies too. While we probably shouldn't expect large amounts of snowfall, temperatures should be keeping fairly low. Currently the next decent cm of snow is forecast for around Saturday night. ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -6C, 10cm snowfall and calm. Moiwa 800m: -9.5C, W1.7m/s, 15cm snowfall with no snowdrift accumulation. Mikaeri 764m: -11C, calm, 15cm snowfall. Annupur 1000m: -10.3C, WNW3.8m/s. Village 1000m: -9.3C, WSW3.5m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -9.8C, SSW4.9m/s, light drizzle. Hanazono#3: -7.4C, WSW4.2m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape NW8m/s, Kamui cape WNW7m/s, 1015hPa, 0.7m waves. A low pressure area in the north Shakotan has brought 10-15cm snowfall in the western aspect of the mountain range. There is no strong development of snowdrifts due to light wind. The snow quality is good as a cold air mass remains up in higher elevation. Light crystal snow. Evaluating all data, the overall avalanche risk is low. Seek for the ski patrol’s advice when stepping out of the gates. Do not forget, you’re making a clear decision to step out of the ski resort responsibilities when going outside the gates. Surface slab avalanches are likely to occur in south facing sun-affected slopes of the Harunotaki and Yunosawa strictly off-limits areas. Do not enter these areas at all times. The most likely cause of death when getting caught in an avalanche is suffocation. Hitting trees or other obstacles on the way down are also common cases. Wearing a beacon will still dramatically raise your chance to survive. No matter the weather conditions, take the habit to always wear a beacon and a helmet when skiing out of bounds. Winter sports are amazing, however it is also true that they are inherently dangerous. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Morning from Zao. Lots of cloud this morning but some blue sky too and visibility is good across the mountain early morning. Later on it might cloud over somewhat with a chance of light snowfall. And that seems to be the kind of pattern we might expect over the next few days. Beyond that there's more of a chance of sunny skies. Not a whole lot of potential heavy snow over the next week. The best chance of some decent new cm is mid-weekend. It should be keeping cold, though, which is good.
