Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 20cm Snowfall at base this season 909m Weather overview Sun, light snow Wind Light Temperature - Visibility Varied Posted at 10:42am on Saturday 9th February 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A very nice woman called to ask me if I could guide her around, "When the sun comes back again." Oh, people; snow is the norm. Snow is what we want. Sun is something we may or may not see once or twice a month. We want it to just keep on falling. Today started sunny, after a pretty nice overnight fall. But by 10, we were already starting to see a few flakes drifting down, while the peaks are once again up there in the clouds. Looks like the start of a few days of snow, at least, perhaps even a bit heavy. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 40cm Snowfall at base this season 949m Weather overview Heavy snow Wind Moderate to strong Temperature - Visibility Poor Posted at 10:07am on Monday 11th February 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Sorry for the lack of a report yesterday. But today I bring good news. Snow! Lots of snow! It's very 'Myoko' out there this morning, with heavy snowfall, delayed trains and people heading out early to try and get back to the big cities. Meaning a great day for the powderhounds. We probably had 30-50 cm at base level - a little hard to tell with a lot of blowing - and it's even coming down harder now. After leaving for about an hour to take a friend down to the station (train delayed about 20 minutes), returned to find the driveway pretty well filled in again. The wind is gusting at times, which could result in some lift closures (particularly Suginohara's No. 3 - check ahead - and the gondolas at Akakan and Suginohara). It's also bringing visibility way down. Worse for driving than for skiing.... Off the piste, there is a hard rain crust that has produced some isolated slides. Keep an eye on steep slopes, bring all your gear (even if you're just going off the lifts). Better, choose a safe slope and enjoy all that powder. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Sorry for the late report today. Evening already, how the time flies. After the rain of yesterday we awoke to some snow this morning. Not a huge amount but definitely better than rain. (Isn't everything!?) The day started off with light snow but at the moment it's just cloudy. A colder day today as well starting off around -4C with a cold of -9 up on the mountain but temps rising toe. around zero level at base. Hopefully we will see some more snowfall overnight and into tomorrow. Thursday might be clearer before more snow on Friday and then some really potentially decent snowfall due around Sunday. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . I was going to wait a bit before writing today's report, because today can't decide what kind of a day it's going to be. We had a little light snow and minus temperatures at breakfast time, but at lunch we have about 4 degrees and--hate to say it--rain. Very light rain, though, and the freezing line should be coming down during the afternoon. Hopefully that means rain turning to snow, frowns turning to grins. I'm always optimistic, since we do live in Myoko, after all, and snow will come. At least the roof isn't threatened by tons of endlessly falling snow. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 864m Weather overview Foggy, light snow Wind Moderate Temperature - Visibility Fair Posted at 5:47am on Sunday 3rd February 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The rain is gone! Wind and a dusting of snow followed during the night, so it's not wet and nasty (even if the snow isn't that great just yet). But no complaints, right? Snow is on the forecast for the days ahead (alright, maybe a little rain down low tomorrow, but let's think confident, snowy thoughts and maybe this too will pass). If you plan to venture off the groomed in the coming days though, please be really careful about the possible ice layer the rain, and sudden return to cold, could have created. This could make the perfect layer for new snow to slide off--or it might simply bond well to the new snow and disappear. Without a good check, it's impossible to tell, but the possibility is there, so think before you attack that treeless, 40-degree slope. There's a reason why there are no trees there....and you don't want to know firsthand (and we down want you swept away, either). The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A day for ski....videos, maybe. Actually, the rain isn't falling that hard, and people are out there having fun. The wind isn't blowing as hard as was predicted--yet--so it's not a terrible day. Just not great. Last night's wind and rain, though, have really eaten up the snowpack. Nice around the house (the asphalt has emerged on its own), not so great for the mountain. It's still early in the season, though, and it's going to turn around over the coming days, with colder temperatures and snow. • Myoko Now: Thursday 31st January 2013

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 8cm Snowfall at base this season 859m Weather overview Sunny Wind Calm Temperature - Visibility Excellent Posted at 7:56am on Thursday 31st January 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . None of the resorts have submitted snow reports today--maybe busy doing those end-of-the-month billings and reporting--but I'll give you the officially, me-observed data for the last day of January. We basically got just a light dusting of snow, after maybe 10cm of wind-blown micro-powder yesterday (tiny, tiny crystals that mean slow skiing). The temperature is currently -5.6°C according to the outside monitor, and it is a beautiful, sunny day. Enjoy it while you can, because it looks like warm, rainy days for two days, and then winter comes back--a little scary for backcountry conditions, if a rain crust freezes hard and fresh falls on top. Not fun elsewhere, either, to be honest. Remember, cruising the piste is still fun and easier on the knees than ice chunks. • Myoko Now: Monday 28th January 2013

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 7cm Snowfall at base this season 846m Weather overview Cloudy some sun Wind Light Temperature - Visibility Good Posted at 10:45am on Monday 28th January 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A little light snow today, after a good fall yesterday. The sun peeked out for a few minutes an hour or so ago, but we're back to clouds and occasional snow. It's nice and cold, though, keeping the snow conditions good, and the powder yesterday was lighter and better settled than it's been over recent days. Looks like warmer weather ahead toward the end of this week--did I actually see a rain mark out there? Hopefully that's one weather icon that will be changing during the week, although it does seem likely that the freezing line will continue to go up the mountain (meaning warmer weather). These changes in sun and temperature have some local guides a bit nervous about the slope conditions; there is a weak layer in the snow that my neighbor/guide is still shaking his head about a bit -- he's avoiding some of the steepest slopes. As always, be careful in questionable areas, and carry your avalanche gear (and a friend) even if you're just going off the lifts. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 50cm Snowfall at base this season 839m Weather overview Some sun, light snow Wind Light Temperature - Visibility Good Posted at 8:51am on Sunday 27th January 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . After a good day of moderate to heavy snowfall and some pretty strong winds at times, the snow slowed down overnight. Probably 15-20cm was the overnight total on top of yesterday's 30 or so (sorry, didn't get the ruler out during the morning snowthrowing). We have a little sunshine at the moment (which is nice for getting that snow off the roof), although a bit more snow seems likely through the day. For backcountry people: we had a serious woomph at about 1800 on an east-facing slope yesterday -- probably due to the sun crust that's down about 60cm in the snowpack. A solid sound like thunder and the pack definitely dropped -- no problem where we were, but pretty exciting anyway. On some steep slopes, especially with the energy of the sun, it could be more hazardous today, so please be careful! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . I was going to write, where's the snow? We heard reports of the highways closing further north, but as of 6 this morning, the snow was just trickling down. Around 7, though, the fall definitely picked up and it's holding pretty steady now. Luckily the winds haven't hit yet, but the forecast is for strong winds during the day. Suginohara pretty much shut down for part of the day yesterday because of winds. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Well, unfortunately it's one of those few days in mid season when I have to report... rain. Yes, it's raining, and even higher up as well apparently. With the warmer conditions and this rain we're having, I can't pretend to say that conditions will be particularly pleasing out there today. Perhaps some people will decide it's time for an onsen or a trip to see those cheeky monkeys over near Shiga Kogen. Then again, good exercise and perhaps less people might make it appealing. Take your choices! It's due to remain mild for the day and into tomorrow with temperatures in the positive. We can just hope that the skies clear up somewhat and the rain stops. Clearer conditions are forecast for tomorrow. The good news is that from around Friday, heavy snow should be falling with a return to wintery conditions so lets look forward to that. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 50cm Snowfall at base this season 704m Weather overview Cloud, snow Wind Moderate Temperature - Visibility Reduced Posted at 7:31am on Friday 18th January 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . After a pretty nice day of light, ongoing snow, things really got turned on towards the end of yesterday, with big, light flakes falling heavily through the night and into this morning. Since I shoveled off a container-house roof yesterday, I can tell you with some confidence that 50cm or so have fallen in total (a reminder that the snow-removal work in Myoko is a process, not a final goal). I think it's colder than the resorts are reporting (unusually); the car and my outside thermometer are both reading -7°C at 7:30, while most are saying -3°C or so. The wind isn;t too strong yet, although the reports have some wind (and chill) possible. Looks like snow will continue through tomorrow, with some sun possible after that. Things change fast, though.
