Takahan is a traditional Japanese ryokan inn located close to the central area of Yuzawa town in Niigata Prefecture. Takahan has with a long history and the famous Nobel Prize winning novel 'Yukiguni' (Snow Country) was written by Yasunari Kawabata while staying at Takahan.

Takahan offers traditional Japanese style guest rooms - you need to take off your shoes when entering. After you have settled in your room, please change into the traditional loungewear provided, called ‘Yukata’, and relax on the ‘tatami’ mats.
Each of the 36 rooms are equipped with air conditioning. 30 rooms are furnished with a shower and toilet.
All guests are welcome to use the public onsen hot spring facilities within the hotel.

Niigata is famous for the richness of its seasonal ingredients found in the mountains and ocean. Guests can enjoy fresh seafood from local fishing ports, as well as a palate from the local mountains.
Reputed to be Japan’s best brand of rice, ‘Koshihikari’ is produced here in the local area.
‘Nihonshu’ (Japanese sake) is synonymous with Niigata prefecture and there are many famous ‘sake’ breweries in Niigata. Guests can sample a variety of those premium brands here.

Known as one of the oldest hot-spring hotels in Japan, Takahan has a history dating back 800 years when the founder, Hanroku Takahashi, discovered hot springs here. Since then, the inn has been passed down in the Takahashi family for generations.
The famous Japanese novel, 'Yukiguni' (Snow Country), was written at Takahan by Yasunari Kawabata in the early 20th century. The novel won the Nobel Prize for Literature. This is commemorated at Takahan, including the room where Kawabata stayed and wrote Yukuguni (‘Kasumi-no-ma’, free entry for guests) as well as other related documents.
Takahan is located close to the central area of Yuzawa, overlooking the Shinkansen train line and town area. The ski and snowboard resorts in Yuzawa and neighbouring Minamiuonuma are within easy reach.
