Independent snow and weather reporting from the Zao region of Yamagata

New snowfall at base 5cm
Snowfall at base this season 422cm

Posted on Sunday 30th January 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Zao Now report can be found here.

Morning from Zao.

The sun is appearing earlier than anticipated although it will be an in/out day.

There is wind about which may get stronger during the day but nothing lift stopping.

The very light snow at present may pick up a bit but moderately.

In the meantime, the modest snow last night is still welcome as there were compact patches appearing on the more popular slopes yesterday e.g. Hyakumanin.

It appears to be a popular weekend with most people being on the far right side as you look at the mountain. Probably also wanting to go to the very top, however, the snow monsters are very low this year and can be seen even on the Utopia lift. There was a winding queue for the second stage ropeway to the top by mid-morning so be aware of that.

Official snow depth:

Summit: 150cm

Paradise: 190cm

Chuo: 190cm

Utopia: 215cm

Uwanodai: 150cm

All areas and lifts should be opening as scheduled.
