Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata
New snowfall at base 30cm
Snowfall at base this seas 692cm
Posted on Thursday 21st March 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here.
Perhaps in the general tradition of the 23-24 season, what actually happened yesterday and overnight wasn't quite what the forecasts told us to expect. Fairly soon after the report yesterday morning, the snow eased off and we even got some bright spells during the day, though it remained mostly cloudy. So there wasn't much snow to talk about down at town level yesterday.
We did get an impressive amount overnight though. Here's what is being reported:
Kagura: 40cm
Maiko Snow Resort: 35cm
Japan Meteorological Agency measuring point: 26cm
Our Yuzawa measuring point: 30cm
Our Minamiuonuma measuring point (north of Ishiuchi Maruyama): 21cm
That's amazing for late March.
Check out the Snowfall analysis page of this report here.
On that page you'll see that last year we were only able to report 11cm of snowfall in the whole of March. And most years, we have reported less than 50cm in March.
This March, we have now reported 156cm of snowfall at town level. And all that after the very poor showing (in terms of snowfall) in February.
It has definitely been a very odd-feeling season.
But anyway, we have fresh snow and conditions should be really good this morning! Who's have thought?!
Snow has been forecast through the day today too, but it is only snowing lightly right now and there is even a bit of sunshine breaking through the clouds and some blue sky just north of Yuzawa.
Ski area news: The Tashiro Area of Kagura and the top lift at the ski area is closed again today due to wind.
