Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata

New snowfall at base 36cm
Snowfall at base this seas 733cm

Posted on Tuesday 21st February 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here.

Good morning from Yuzawa.

There's a lot going on this morning!

First of all... new snow. Kagura is reporting a whopping 80cm of it (presumably up top), Maiko Snow Resort is reporting 30cm. We have measured 36cm at our measuring point in Yuzawa and 23cm just to the north of Ishiuchi Maruyama. So some varying amounts there, but bottom line is that there's a good new layer of fresh snow and a lot as you go higher. Excellent.

Less great is that you won't be able to check out all the snow at Kagura because the Kagura Area is on hold and the Tashiro Area is closed (due to strong forecast wind), so only the Mitsumata Area is open this morning there.

The Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway is also not operating this morning and the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is closed due to avalanche risk (the main Central and Northern Areas of GALA Yuzawa are open as normal). Some other lifts might also be affected this morning.

It is still snowing this morning with snow due through the day (though there have been a few quick spells of brighter conditions this morning, though they were quick to disappear).

Currently just under -2C in town.

We might get some sun during the day tomorrow.
