Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano

New snowfall at base 55cm
Snowfall at base this season 228cm

Posted on Thursday 31st December 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here.

We have made it to the last day of 2020.

And the year is going out in style, in terms of snowfall anyway. Tons of it since yesterday, well over 0.5m.

Kumanoyu is reporting 50cm and that's the only number I can find from ski areas this morning. Wind has been blowing it around so it's one of those days when it's difficult to put a number on it, but in my relatively wind free zone that I use for numbers, I have just measured 55cm. There's some places where there is much more than that.

It's not going to stop for a while either. We can probably expect snow to continue through the weekend.

Visibility is poor and there's a wind about so it's not the friendliest of conditions this morning. There might well be some lifts affected by the snow/weather.

With these weather conditions and Tokyo (and other areas) asking people to have a quiet New Year and 'stay home', I expect things to be strangely quiet compared with a normal new year.

Let's hope that 2021 can see some kind of return to some kind of normal.
