Niseko Now: Monday 2nd November 2026
Good morning from Niseko.
I don't have any visible fresh snow to report this morning, and actually right now the sun is shining through the clouds in places. It is mostly cloudy for now.
Forecasts currently seem to be predicting some real cold conditions and a layer of snow around Saturday.
Last week I mentioned two pieces of the SnowJapan daily coverage puzzle left to fall into place.
I am told that the official snow depth data will start updating later this month at the earliest; maybe December. That makes sense, given there needs to be natural snow, and enough places open with it, for that to be useful.
The other thing I teased last time is now online! Let me tell you about it.
It’s a new interactive chart that displays the timeline of cumulative snowfall, with seasons 2012-2013 through 2025-2026 plotted together on one graph. Check it out here:
You can toggle the data for each season on and off by clicking on the dates at the top of the graph.
Data for each season on each date is also available by clicking or tapping with your paw anywhere on the graph. Pretty cool, hey?
That’s the ‘seasons until now’ version of the chart, and a link to it can always be found on the Niseko Now overview page.
But there’s more… what about the upcoming ski season?
Got you covered!
On the 2026-2027 season page, there’s a similar but separate chart that will be updated every day with my data for the current season. Right now there’s just 5cm on there as of 2nd November, but as the season progresses you’ll start to see a red line appear over all the other previous seasons (shown in grey), so we’ll get an idea of how the current season compares with previous ones.
Hopefully that red line will trend high! The link to the 2026-2027 season page can be found at the top of each report, including this one, but here it is:
I think these are fine additions to the reports. Saying that, I don’t want anyone to presume that I am the one adding all this new functionality. For I am not. My input each day remains the same as it has been. I’m as excited as anyone – actually, probably more excited than anyone! - to see the data I report each day come to life in such interesting ways.
Lastly, without being 'too much information', two points:
The chart will not be automatically updated when my report goes live; the update might be later in the day.
On the previous site, the 'system' only allowed reports starting from 1st November which means that any snowfall in October was reported in November.
Anyway, all we need now is snow.
Here's what the chart looks like:
