Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata

New snowfall at base 20cm
Snowfall at base this season 176cm

Posted on Friday 26th December 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here.

Santa was a little late with the best present for the holidays; just before 5 am it was just beginning to snow, and the wind was really blowing.

Right now we’ve got something like 20cm on the ground already. I’ll measure the total when things taper off and add it on tomorrow so we get a good figure for the total fall. The timing is great, though. A 5cm base really isn't workable, is it. I would say 15cm is also unusable, 30cm is barely OK. The national forecast says upwards of 80cm for Niigata Prefecture, of which we are a part (although lots of natives think we’re in Nagano. We’re just surrounded by Nagano on three sides, not part of it).

The wind is pretty strong, too, so there is a lot of drifting at the moment. The snow started recently enough that the snowplows haven’t moved out yet, so there’s some interesting conditions out there (i.e. if your rental car isn’t 4WD, take the shuttle bus!).

Nice to see some good minus temperatures, too.

Oh happy day....
