Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano

New snowfall at base 5cm
Snowfall at base this season 106cm

Posted on Monday 25th December 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here.

Good morning from Hakuba. Seasons greetings to all!

There has been lots of cloud early this morning as some overnight snow eased off. Happo-one is reporting up to 15cm of fresh snow at the top of the Alpen quad lift.

There is some sun coming through my window as I write this and blue sky in some directions too.

Night skiing is scheduled to start at Goryu from tomorrow.

Side note:

Happo-one currently has this on its English 'trail conditions' page: "The snow is melting on the trails! Hakuba Happo-one is now open for the summer season!", along with a whole lot of green season info posted in June.

I mention this just as one example of how difficult it sometimes is to collect (and be sure of) the information that ski areas themselves put out there. As someone who is checking such info every morning and trying to be as correct as possible in this report, it seems really crazy that these very popular ski areas don't seem to put more importance on these things. (One some days, it really does makes me wonder why I put the effort in... then I remember, I love doing it, frustrations aside!)

Anyway, Happy and indeed Merry Christmas! (Left-over cake and fried chicken for breakfast?)
