Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano

New snowfall at base 29cm
Snowfall at base this season 136cm

Posted on Saturday 24th December 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here.

It's Christmas weekend and Hakuba is doing great!

Here's how much fresh snow is being reported by ski areas early this morning:

- Hakuba Happo-one: 15cm (Kurobishi); 23cm (Usagidaira); 30cm (Nakiyama)

- Hakuba Goryu: 30cm

- Hakuba 47: 20-30cm

- Hakuba Cortina: 40cm (top); 30cm (base)

- Hakuba Iwatake: 10cm

Some varied numbers there, but you get a good idea. My own observation is 29cm. There's more and less in places. (A good 'problem' to have). The tree branches are looking strained under the weight of snow, and the snow making machines are looking a bit embarrassed at us not needing them right now. I'm sure they are happy for us. :)

The only downer really is that some upper lifts are not moving this morning due to strong winds.

As things get close to being fully open, I am in the process of cleaning up the individual ski area listings in the report, below. I think we are at the stage now where I don't need to mention individual lifts that are moving. From here on, it's more a case of what is not open. It might take a few more days for the final form to take shape!

The snow should be continuing through tomorrow at least. As I write this, it is snowing lightly.

Happy Christmas Eve!
