Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano

New snowfall at base 16cm
Snowfall at base this season 571cm

Posted on Tuesday 22nd February 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here.

Yesterday was cold, snowy, windy and generally like peak mid winter day. And some excellent deep snow conditions out there.

Some interesting snowfall numbers being reported this morning. Check this out: Cortina saying there has been 40-50cm of snowfall. But they have flipped that back to 24 hours, rather than 12 hours of recent days. (I wish I knew what was going on with that). Other ski areas are reporting more modest numbers, more in the range up to 10cm-20cm 'overnight'.

Light snow is falling at the moment in base areas (seems to have stopped in some places) and snow on the mountain. It is another cold morning but without the wind we had yesterday. Things should be easing off leaving us with an increasing chance of clearer (or just cloudy) weather beyond tomorrow.

A new-look SnowJapan website is coming very soon. I was given a peak at it yesterday and spent a few hours with it. All I can say is... what a truly fantastic job the guys have done. It's a bit of a shock to the system at first, being so used to the site as it is now, but it feels like the new set up is clearly a big step up. I can't wait to see more of it and us all get used to it.
