The Tohoku Shinkansen connects Tokyo Station with Shin Aomori Station in Aomori Station. It has two 'mini-Shinkansen' branch lines - the Yamagata Shinkansen and Akita Shinkansen.
The line will be extended in late March 2016 as the Hokkaido Shinkansen to Hakodate, with a further extension through to Sapporo City planned for the future.

There are four types of train services - Hayabusa, Hayate, Yamabiko and Nasuno:
Hayabusa trains run between Tokyo and Shin Aomori with limited stops along the way. Hayate trains also run between Tokyo and Shin Aomori with limited stops, but are slower than the Hayabusa service. Yamabiko trains run between Tokyo and Sendai limited stop and then all trains to Morioka. Nasuno trains run from Tokyo to Oyama / Nasu Shiobara / Koriyama.
